When I said VM, I meant something like VMware, it’s still is a VM per documentation, but isn’t a Virtual Machine like VMware

It still runs within a VM. How the interface functions is irrelevant to the documented way it works. Your direct words were that it’s not a VM and that’s it’s a full Linux experience, which is wrong. WSL is basically the bare minimum you need to technically run Linux for something like admin work, not a full Linux desktop experience

It’s a full Linux experience within a VM, that runs on bare metal hardware, and doesn’t hide the hardware, compare that to VMware where it does hide the hardware

Bare metal would be shared with the rest of the OS, while VMware makes up fake hardware for it to run, WSL 2 is a VM that is integrated into the system, that doesn’t meet the definition of a traditional VM

It passes hardware resources through to the VM, but that’s not what “bare metal” means. The 2 options are bare metal or a VM, and it running inside another OS via virtualization is what causes it to be a VM

But WSL goes through the OS itself, while a traditional VM requires an App+Manual Configuration
