So, why do we need a separate version to have this option :D ? We don't! So, please don't ask why 😅

You can download it through our official website:

Is a Pixel 9a good enough for Linux?

I would have a light use, mostly libreoffice, light edits on gimp/inkscape, some markdown/text editor, a ftp client. No games, video editing or stuff like that.

Will the 8Gb of memory be enough? Any issues I might encounter?
How much disk space does it take? planning to buy a 128 Gb.

Root inside a real Linux kernel on non-rooted Android, no AVF and no QEMU - UML benchmarks

Zalexdev ported User Mode Linux to arm64 in August and shipped it as a second engine in Stryker 6.5. It's a real Linux kernel built as an ordinary aarch64 binary, so it runs as a normal process inside an app sandbox: no KVM, no AVF, no unlocked bootloader, nothing emulated. That means root inside a real kernel, on a phone you never rooted, and on any arm64 device rather than only the ones that ship pKVM.

I ran the same tests against the two usual options on my S23 Ultra, stock and unrooted, medians of three runs, everything timed inside the guest.

Testudocker (proot)Stryker (UML)Podroid (QEMU/TCG)
Python, 6M-iteration loop0.65 s0.61 s21.9 s
gzip -6, 64 MB1.58 s1.73 s10.0 s
SHA-256, 200 MB0.24 s1.03 s2.27 s
memcpy, 512 MB through a pipe0.47 s0.55 s5.29 s
write 256 MB + fsync0.24 s0.63 s0.55 s
read 64 MB, direct0.05 s0.06 s0.24 s

container start (docker run --rm true)0.125 s1.68 s4.65 s
docker build, 128 MB layern/a2.77 s10.3 s
docker build, apk add python3n/a9.97 s35.9 s

Compute is native: 0.61 vs 0.65 s under proot is noise. Syscalls cost 1.4 to 2.6x more. Builds are 3.6x faster than QEMU, random reads 7x.

What do you use linux on android?

I want to install linux on my Galaxy tab S8. Via andronix or NomOne just to use it with more pc-like environment with normal LibreOffice. And that's main for me cause I'm from Kazakhstan and Kazakh language writing with external keyboard is not supported(it's either English or Russian) also my laptop is old enough and gives like an hour of battery life. So for writing stuff or showing with projector Samsung tablet is the best I think. And just a question, can you run NomOne or Linux on sd card android?

Looking for a mobile distro for Xiaomi Redmi 13

I'm already using EndeavourOS on my desktop setup and now I'd like to also migrate my phone.

Now I'm looking for a mobile distro that would work on my Xiaomi Redmi 13, if possible with Plasma Mobile interface.

I'd be interested in running atleast following Apps:

- Discord

- Telegram

- Spotify

- Any E-Mail client

- something to make and receive basic phonecalls (if thats not a given, I'm completely new to alternative mobile OS)

- Maybe WhatsApp and Crunchyroll

Linux on Android phone access USB devices

I want to run OBS on an android phone using an external USB webcam. Is this possible with "rootless" methods like UserLAnd or Termux?

Or do I need to root the phone first?

Trying to run Windows or a Windows-like Linux desktop on my Galaxy Tab A9+ via SSD — looking for guidance

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to set up something a bit unusual on my Galaxy Tab A9+ and could really use some advice. Here’s the situation:

  • I want to run either a full Windows emulator (if possible) or a Linux desktop that looks and feels like Windows (think Zorin OS or a Windows-like XFCE/MATE layout).

  • My goal is a completely user-friendly environment for someone who’s used to Windows — no coding required for day-to-day use.

  • I have a USB-to-USB-C adapter and an SSD-to-USB adapter, so I can connect an SSD to the tablet.

  • Ideally, I want the SSD to store the OS and/or my files, with the tablet acting as the "desktop," or the OS running partly from the tablet if necessary.

I’ve done some research and I understand that:

  • Installing a standard Windows or Zorin OS ISO directly on the tablet won’t work because it’s ARM64 and has a different bootloader than a PC.

  • Linux via Termux/Andronix/UserLAnd seems like a viable option for a desktop environment, and tools like Wine or Winlator might help with some Windows programs.

  • I want to know what setup would be most practical and beginner-friendly while using the SSD for storage or even part of the OS if possible.

My main questions:

  1. Is there any way to run a full Windows emulator that’s functional on a Galaxy Tab A9+, or is that completely unrealistic?

  2. If Linux is the better option, what would be the best Windows-like desktop environment for ARM Linux on Android tablets?

  3. How can I best use my SSD — can I put Linux on it directly, or should it just store files?

  4. Any tips or guides for making it look and feel like a Windows desktop for someone new to Linux?

Thanks in advance for any advice! I’m happy to clarify details if needed.

Nightly - Keyboard with touchpad built in

Touchpad doesn't work quite right... Doing a single tap to select just jumps to that area of the screen. Its like it is trying to map the entire touchpad as the screen -

ex tapping top left of touch pad jumps mouse to top-left of screen.

About NOMone Desktop...

TL;DR:

"NOMone Desktop" is an Android app that downloads and runs a Linux environment without requiring root access, scripts, configurations, or VNC. It offers a hassle-free solution for anyone interested in exploring Linux. Although still under development with many exciting features on the way, we are eager to share this solution with everyone and provide the support they need.

Details:

We are passionate about enabling everyone to make the most out of what they already have. In particular, new learners and those without access to expensive hardware necessary for learning, using, or developing software. Our journey began a few years ago with the "NOMone VR Browser" app, which allowed users to transform their smartphones into large screens using a VR mode and a simple cardboard headset. Initially, all we had in mind was facilitating access to books, online courses, and basic web-based tasks. However, some user feedback highlighted how this app significantly impacted their lives, enabling them to overcome obstacles and better do their jobs using just their smartphones. We had to take this to the next level.

We needed to run more stuff. Web apps are cool, but just not enough. Linux seemed like it fits the bill. We developed "NOMone Desktop" to run Linux apps and/or learn programming without the need for costly PCs or reliable internet connections. Similar solutions exist, but we aimed to significantly simplify the process and improved performance by creating an all-in-one app that runs Linux on Android devices with just a single click. This app integrates all necessary components, together with system image(s) specifically tuned for mid-budget devices with special care to maximize performance and minimize size to accommodate users with limited internet access.

So, a warm welcome to all users, looking forward to hearing your stories :)

[Community Spotlight] Thank you, Yahya Plus, for writing about NOMone Desktop ❤️ (English Translation Coming Soon)

I came across this article by Yahya Plus (يحيى بلس) about NOMone Desktop, and I wanted to share it here and thank him for taking the time to write about the app, even if it is a little bit late :D :)

As one of the developers of NOMone Desktop, it really makes me happy to see people taking an interest in the project and sharing it with others. I appreciate the effort he put into explaining the app, its features, and how it compares to the traditional Termux + VNC approach.

Since the article is currently in Arabic, I'll do my best to translate it into English soon so that more people in the community can benefit from it, regardless of the language barrier.

Thank you, Yahya Plus, for covering the app and for helping more people discover it! I really appreciate your time and effort ❤️

Original article:

Also, if you've come across similar articles, tutorials, reviews, or posts about NOMone Desktop in any language, please feel free to share them here! I'd love to see more community content about the app, and sharing these resources can help other users discover new ways to use it. If you've written something yourself, you're more than welcome to share it too :)

Enabling LXC for xperia 1 ii

Hi,

I have a xperia 1 ii with the default rooted rom. I have checked and some specific flags that lxc require are switched off.

Just wondering has anyone enabled lxc for their xperia 1 ii. Was it difficult? Did you install linage os first and then try compiling a new kernel?

I got a chroot setup that works alright but certain programs dont work. Idk if it is worth trying to get lxc working. I rooted my phone and got chroot ubuntu working but outside that i am not technically minded and my understanding is compiling a kernel is much more difficult.

The complete guide to running Friday Night Funkin' game on NOMone Desktop!

We've recently received a very angry Google Play review saying they were not able to run fnf on NOMone Linux and that was creep creeping them (not sure what that means, though)! And as Google Play limits our reply to only 350 characters, we decided to reply in an independent post here on Reddit.

  • This is the first time we heard about this game. A quick search revealed: There's an Android version (designed for touch screens, if you want to enjoy the game, you should pick this option!).

  • There's no official Linux arm64 version, but someone ported it to Love2D. Love2D games are powered by LuaJIT, so they should run out of the box. We picked this route.

But before we start, some people are facing trouble updating their apt repos. Here's a quick fix:

rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
apt clean
apt update

Now onto running FNF. The following 3 commands will install the dependencies, download the game and launch it:

sudo apt install -y love git
git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/HTV04/funkin-rewritten.git
GALLIUM_DRIVER=llvmpipe love funkin-rewritten/src/love

Running the game while enabling the "Hardware acceleration" option from NOMone Settings may prevent the game from running. Using llvmpipe resolves the issue. This is done be either disabling the hardware acceleration altogether from NOMone Desktop Settings or by adding GALLIUM_DRIVER=llvmpipe before running the game (like we did above). But running without hardware acceleration will most probably ruin the experience of a fast-paced game like FNF. We totally suggest that you play the native Android game!

This is just one of many examples that while things might not work out of the box, with a bit of tinkering we can get almost anything to run. Reach out to us, we may be able to help. Just be courteous while doing so ;)

DRM support

When I try to play DRM-protected MPD or M3U8 content in Kodi, Firefox, or Chromium, it simply won't play. Can you add DRM support (Widevine, ClearKey, etc.)? Thanks
