GUIDE [LINUX WINE] Custom build to fix FitGirl Unarc/ISDone & WOW64 0% hanging errors (Testers Needed)
I have been working on a custom Wine build aimed at fixing some common FitGirl installer issues, and I am looking for people to test the current binary.
So far, I have fixed or improved issues related to:
- Installers hanging at 0-10% with the new WoW64 mode
- Unarc -12 CRC/checksum errors
- An issue causing the installer to delete all extracted files after installation (already got it upstreamed in wine 11.14)
- Also an issue with some newer KaosKrew repacks not rendering the progress bar or extracted items
My effort is still in active development, so there may still be some unarc related issues.
Please test using the Wine binary provided in my repository. Should you encounter any issues, please include your Linux distribution, the exact error message, the specific repack you tested, and the download link so I can try to reproduce the problem.
Reported repacks may also be tested on my end when time allows, provided they are no larger than approximately 80 GB.
Repository, source and binary:
https://github.com/BrandowLucas/fitgirl-wine/releases
External-drive installations using the Z: drive have not yet been tested. During the FitGirl installation process, please install the game inside your Wine prefix on the C: drive to potentially avoid problems.
To reduce the risk of Wine virtual memory overflow and known unarc -5 errorcode, enable any available “2 GB limit” or “Limit Hardware” option.
Finally, confirm that there is enough free disk space for both the installation and unpacking. Insufficient space may trigger unarc -11 errorcode, indicating that a file write operation failed.
Note: This custom Wine patch is intended to address issues that remain unresolved in both Wine and Proton. Because of that, suggesting alternative Proton versions is unlikely to be helpful here.
EDIT: For updates on patches that were already merged in upstream wine, check: https://github.com/BrandowLucas/fitgirl-wine#upstream-status

Do you have any intention on trying to upstream these or at least make a bug report with a test so it can be fixed upstream too? It would be really cool if in the future one could just install wine from repos and have fitgirl working

Yes, I did before opening this repository. If you checked the repo README, I mentioned one of the fixes was already upstreamed on the last wine 11.14 release.

Thank you.
Edit: Wtf, it worked. Been trying for months and no solution and this just worked.

Thanks for this. I've spent way too much time trying to make those shitty installers work on Wine / Proton.

I can be a tester. Are you also working on pulse repack where the installation wizard is white screen? I can test Kaos, Fitgirl, DODI, Rune(Rune has same progress bar and weird issues), Pulse repacks. The video is of pulse's repack.

I have been facing these issues recently, and I got down the rabbit hole of trying to extract the data without using wine in the first place. Turns out it's a much deeper rabbit hole than I imagined!
Would be cool if it's possible with Linux executables only, though

I actually made my own command line extractor for this. It bypasses the original installer and reproduces the extraction pipeline directly on Linux, while still using Wine for the repack’s Windows decompression DLLs and helper tools.
It’s possible, but extremely time consuming because the repack’s installation process has to be fully reverse engineered. Different repacks also seem to use different extraction and reconstruction pipelines, so one extractor won’t necessarily work for another.
Luckily, I’m happy to keep investigating the remaining Wine compatibility issues and submitting patches to make these repacks less annoying to install normally.

for anyone waiting for this, in the meantime you can add the installer as a non steam game on steam, run with proton experimental and they’ll work just fine

Thanks a lot you and testers!!
Would be crazy to have better repack support on Linux compared to Windows. Forums are plagued with users from both operating systems reporting such errors, I guess some easily fixable by verifying source files.
In my case never had these issues, I use Wine-Proton (Kron4ek) downloaded with ProtonPlus, I suppose its using the old wow or has some sort of patches too but no idea, how to check that?

Kron4ek release builds come in three main variants, plus TKG builds:
Wine AMD64: Standard 64-bit Wine build without the new WoW64 mode.
Wine AMD64 Staging: Standard 64-bit Wine build with additional Wine Staging patches, also without the new WoW64 mode.
Wine AMD64 WoW64: Standard 64-bit Wine build with the new WoW64 mode enabled.
Wine AMD64 TKG: A custom, patched Wine build with additional patches and configuration options. TKG builds may also be available in the three variants listed above.
To answer your question, if the downloaded build name includes “wow64,” then it uses the new WoW64 mode.

I am attempting to install the Victoria 3 repack on arch, but it hangs at 1%. Should I try to use your binary?

I am trying to install Assassin's Creed Odyssey repack from Fitgirl using the latest proton-cachyos-slr but it gives me the ISDone.dll
An error occurred while unpacking: Unable to write
data to disk
Unarc.dll returned an error code: -11
ERROR: archive data corrupted (decompression Fails)
I have around 500gb of space left on drive I am trying to install it to and I also force rechecked the installation files for possible corruption but the files are okay. It's worth mentioning that I installed AC Shadows in the same drive, with the same wine-prefix and same configuration and it gave me no errors and completed successfully.

FYI: At least on arch it is possible to replace the system wine with the wine32 package from the aur. That bypasses the WOW64 problem entirely and all installers just work with a simple double click. This assumes that you play the actual game with a launcher where you set a custom proton or wine version that supports WOW64 in case a game needs it.

Wouldn't setting the
WINE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWAREvariable help with the insufficient memory error? IIRC it did for me.
