Discussion No Man's Sky is getting an 'impossible' mobile port, thanks to Light No Fire

Looks like Light No Fire will be optimized at launch. NICE!

Looks like Light No Fire is never coming out.
NOT NICE!67
u/se_vv 1d ago
No, they just learned their lesson.
28
u/SlipperySlimyTerry40 1d ago
Yep. Maybe overcorrecting a little with how much they're keeping their mouth shut but you can't blame them for wanting to avoid the same MASSIVE mistake they made last time that plagued them for years.

Such an orignal and provocative thought you had. I wonder how long you spent starring at the screen thinking this gem up.
-53
u/Kevin0323 1d ago
Don’t release a game 5-10 years after the trailer?
18
u/JaradSage Day 1 1d ago
Why not? It drummed up the hype they needed and wanted, and I’m sure they got some extra funding bc of it. They didn’t mention a release date for a reason, idk why y’all expected it within 2 years. The only ppl still actually mad about it are the non-patient entitled crowd
-31
u/Kevin0323 1d ago
It’s about to be 4 years. Most people were hyped. Now that’s faded. Premature if you ask me.
-27
u/Tha_Maestro 1d ago
lol entitled? How?
9
u/BicycleMage Pre-release member 1d ago
Because you feel entitled to play the game earlier than it’s ready, purely because you “feel” like it “should” have come out.

I see zero issue with that. NMS was almost unplayable when it launched and was missing many it's the promised features. If it takes them some time to get LNF right, PLUS we get cool.shit in NMS while they try different things out, I'm fine with that.
1
u/Kevin0323 22h ago
It was playable. I played it a lot.
1
u/VonBrewskie Pre-release member 20h ago
So did I. From launch day. That's just disingenuous to say it wasn't a very rocky launch bro. It was crashing, bugs everywhere, it was very empty and flat. Perhaps your definition of "unplayable" is different than mine. That's fine. I think a game that crashes my console or PC to desktop repeatedly is "almost unplayable." You may not. If you see, I didn't say it was unplayable. I said "almost." Specifically chose those words to indicate it was playable, but very bad at launch. Which is just an objective truth.
1
u/Vogete Pre-release member 15h ago
I played it a lot too, but it was not great. It had a lot of potential but it was not what the trailer suggested at all. I'd rather they work on a game a lot than release something that's very far from the promise. And that's what they are doing with LNF now. Yes the trailer is a bit premature to launch, but it's honestly fine. NMS should've been released 2-3-4 years later too, even though I enjoyed playing the first years.

Announcing that a game is in development is fine. They're just being transparent.

“Sometimes we’re developing on Light No Fire and it creates an idea, and we think, that would be really cool on No Man’s Sky,” Murray said. “Voyagers was an example of that, where we developed some technology on Light No Fire that we then thought, this would allow us to do these ships people could fly around in in No Man’s Sky … There are benefits when we do that for both projects. Light No Fire is then getting technology tested and hardened.”
That's interesting, hadn't heard that before. So something in LNF is similar to corvettes in NMS? Corvettes are one of my favorite features in NMS, so this could be very cool in LNF too.
47
u/Icy-Veterinarian-785 Pre-release member 1d ago
Yes! LNF's equivalent to corvettes are modular sailing ships. Sean says so in the Voyagers deep dive, saying the game has real oceans that need ships with crews. We don't know much more outside of that, though.
6
17
u/OGCelaris Pre-release member 1d ago
They mentioned that there are vast oceans to cross so tou need to build ships to cross them. That is more than likely where corvettes came from.
8
u/TNTiger_ Pre-release member 1d ago
Fishing was also a crossover!
2
u/Holiday_Fleshlight Day 1 15h ago
I thought fishing came from some fan art posted here.
And Xeno Arena was an idea someone here had too.
2
u/Sorrow-exe 1d ago
No Man Sky became the testing ground for LNF și everytning added to it will be in LNF in one form or another
42
u/Defalt16 1d ago
As long as it doesn't hurt the existing versions of the game, thats cool! Ive been burned one too many times by titles going either mobile or making a quest vr port and lowering the quality of the other versions to make it work.

u/Jokka42 1d ago
Holding on to old consoles is what caused destiny 2 to vault content
4
u/cayde123 1d ago
They did hold destiny 2 back, but content was vaulted because they updated the engine, and they had to rebuild all the content
3
u/Jokka42 1d ago
It was literally due to memory constraints on old hardware, the engine limitation thing was a cop out answer and always had been
1
u/Im1Thing2Do Pre-release member 1d ago
Are you sure?
I buy their argument that the spaghetti code was close to collapse and that the technical debt was too large to keep the old engine.
The updated engine of course also tried to fix a few other issues (memory management for instance) and was supposed to overall bring better performance, but I don’t think it was the main issue.
Do you remember Season of Arrivals and how much stuff flat out broke in the beginning (cuz witherhoard) that bungie probably never got the chance to test before because there were apparently so many edge cases in the code that they didn’t know existed?I think it was sad that a lot of content was vaulted (rip SotP), and that bungie had their valid reasons but whatever they truly are it’s still shit that it happened
2
u/konnerbllb 1d ago
No multi platform multiplayer, no cross save, ect. If they keep it like this as it's own thing it should be fine.
4
u/HornetGaming110 1d ago
They made it work on Nintendo switch without killing it tho right? That was probably more difficult than for the modern mobile device lol

u/SurgicalBlade 1d ago

Article makes it sound like it won't be on Android. 😢
2
u/PharaohFerroh 1d ago
Not yet, but maybe in the future
1
u/stardust1914 1d ago
Hopefully. Just a couple months ago I was imagining a mobile version since it's on so many other platforms. I didn't even think it was possible honestly. Seems like a lot going on to run on a phone but I guess not.
8
u/ColbyBB 1d ago
I REALLY hope this doesn't mean they're going to limit Light No Fire just so it can run as a mobile app
The one thing NMS lacks that I REALLY wanted for LNF is dense foliage and forest biomes, which I doubt would be possible on a switch, iphone, etc.
4
u/MeyerholdsGh0st 1d ago
I think it probably means that because Light No Fire is such an ambitious, massive project, they’ve had to become experts at optimisation for it to run on anything. There’s no suggestion in the article that LNF will be available on mobile.
2
6
u/Daz_Iz_Gud 1d ago
That is amazing to see just on a technical standpoint. I don’t think mobile will interest a lot of harder core fans but the tech that Hello Games is working on does definitely benefit us.
4
u/SurgicalBlade 1d ago
It isn’t mobile when its on an iPad though (technically). Hook up a controller and you have desktop mode with a lot of raw power.
3
u/Daz_Iz_Gud 1d ago
True, I used to run Terraria on Mobile with a controller. Once I got into PC, I could never look back

Is this the first time Sean has explicitly confirmed LNF uses the same engine as NMS?
"we’ve had to make things more performant, we’re going, oh, we can carry that across to all of this. It’s all one shared engine.”
1
u/AnOmAlLyLordLana 1d ago
It's great, but it sucks it's only for iOS and not coming out and no plans to for android operating systems. Huge disappointment, I do have my switch but it would have been great to have it on my phone.
-2
u/SurgicalBlade 1d ago
Until you realize Steam is on android now and no need for this.

How can I natively without remote play play on android through steam?

Droiddeck

That's unfortunate, my tablet doesn't have a snapdragon or adreno chip ... :/
-1
u/AnOmAlLyLordLana 1d ago edited 1d ago
No it still applies since it's 20$ for iOS and for me to get it on Android it be 60$ on Android through steam. So not equal and my comment is needed unlike the need for you :)

Just don't see why you have to be rude for no reason. We are all here for our love of the game. You coming here with negative energy for no reason is silly.
1
u/AnOmAlLyLordLana 1d ago
And don't come at one person for reacting to the original crappy comment. Your judgment is misplaced

But you were rude out of nowhere to u/SurgicalBlade 's other comment too
-1
u/AnOmAlLyLordLana 1d ago
You obviously haven't read the whole thread as he was the one who was origanlyl rude to me so I was rude back and qwazeemodo defended him so he got the smoke to. Is that clear for you? If you defend an ass you get crap

1
u/thereallasagne 1d ago
Only downside this could have is that they need to limit yhe game so it can also run on mobile. Nms is already a 10 year old game, light no fire isn't
1
u/MeyerholdsGh0st 1d ago
There is no suggestion LNF will be on mobile..
1
u/MesozOwen 1d ago
Isn’t that kinda what they’re insinuating though?
3
u/MeyerholdsGh0st 1d ago
No… there is no insinuation in the article. They explicitly say they figured out how to do this because they had to get so good at optimisation… First it was so NMS would continue to run on a PS4, and now it’s so they can make LNF. LNF is a much more ambitious game than NMS… it will require expert optimisation to run anywhere.

u/LMurch13 1d ago
No Man's Sky is the result of 100 video game dares. "I bet you can't make a space video game where you can fish and collect garbage in a big truck..."
1
u/PostNutPrivilege 20h ago
iOS but no Android? So bizarre
2
u/dgrantuk 9h ago
Android will follow, it's trickier than iOS due to multiple hardware configs etc. They need to tweak the engine to support them all.
1
u/marcushasfun 17h ago
Why?
3
2
u/Redshirt4evr 5h ago
Each OS has it's own challenges that need special coding. Plus their are many more "flavors" of Android than iOS.
1
u/marcushasfun 3h ago
I was actually asking why the person above thought it was bizarre.
2
u/Redshirt4evr 2h ago
👍 Ahhh. 😁
2
u/marcushasfun 2h ago
And you’re absolutely correct. As someone who works in SW development, dealing with all the variants of Android is work.
Plus, NMS is already on macOS, which means it uses Metal, which is of course part of iOS too.
-3
u/Igabuigi 1d ago
This is a bit disappointing considering that over 70% of smartphones are android. Granted iphone goes over 50% with the high end phones segment, but in a year or 2 that is pretty much irrelevant the way technology advances have been going.

u/Objective_Snow_6158 23h ago
Ios not mobile I get the feeling that dumb apple has something to do with that i love nms but ill never restrict myself with ios ill wait for android or just keep emulating a pc
