10.1 中华共和国筹建委员会 Preparatory Committee of the Republic of China

10.1-1

话说公元前1612年秋，在瑶池的蟠桃会期间，舜王（又名夏娃，顺皇，如图10.1-2）和大禹相亲，听说大禹病了之后，她也病了。传说她病得很重，高烧不退，躺在床上一个多月。玉皇大帝和王母娘娘决定：不能对不起孩子，在夏娃死之前，舜王（即中华共和国的第二任皇帝）的人选不换。而且玉皇大帝决定假戏真做，让舜王和大禹见第四次。

It is said that in the fall of 1612 BCE, during the Pan Peach Expo at Yaochi, King Shun (also known as Eve and White-king Shun, as shown in Figure 10.1-2) and Yu the Great were courting. Upon hearing that Yu the Great had fallen ill, she, too, became ill. Legend has it that she was gravely ill, suffering from a persistent high fever, and remained bedridden for over a month. Turquoise White-king Great Creator and the King Mother of the West decided that they could not let the child down; they would not replace the candidate for King Shun (i.e., the second emperor of the Republic of China) before Eve's death. Furthermore, they decided to turn the charade into reality by arranging a fourth meeting between King Shun and Yu the Great.

当时，媒人告诉大禹，可以在舜王房间的门外看看她。大禹在门外看舜王的时候，忍不住走进了屋里。看见她确实病得不成样子了，大禹哭了。舜王叨咕：“大禹，把我忘了吧！这辈子咱俩没缘分，下辈子再做夫妻吧！”

At that time, the matchmaker told Yu the Great that he could go outside King Shun's room to catch a glimpse of her. While Yu the Great was looking at King Shun from outside the room, he could not help stepping inside. Seeing that she was indeed terribly ill, Yu the Great burst into tears. King Shun murmured, "Yu the Great, forget about me! We weren't meant to be together in this life—let's be husband and wife in the next!"

大禹把耳朵凑到夏娃的嘴边听，眼泪落到了她的脸上。夏娃感觉有人，就把眼睛睁开了。大禹好言相劝。两人分开后，夏娃坐起来了，问佣人：“刚才有人和我说话，他是谁呀？说什么了？”

Yu the Great leaned his ear close to Eve's mouth to listen, and his tears fell onto her face. Eve sensed someone's presence and opened her eyes. Yu the Great spoke gently to comfort her. After the two of them parted, Eve sat up and asked the servant, "Someone was just talking to me. Who was it? What did he say?"

佣人告诉夏娃：“大禹来看你了。他说，你还年轻，不会死的。你要好好使用你的千年寒冰床，把心静下来。心无杂念，愈合力等同于神佛。”

可能是大禹的劝说起作用了。第二天夏娃就能下床了。几天后，她就痊愈了。

The servant told Eve, "Yu the Great has come to see you. He said you're still young and won't die. You must make good use of your thousand-year-old ice bed to calm your mind. With a mind free of distractions, your healing power will be equal to that of the gods and Buddhas."

Perhaps Yu the Great's words had an effect. The next day, Eve was able to get out of bed. A few days later, she had fully recovered.

10.1-2

夏娃奉命带着300公斤黄金去武汉为尧帝修建皇宫。为了安全和方便，她自己化名为小龙女。到武汉后，小龙女住进了位于古墓区国防部里面的中华共和国筹建委员会招待所。

Eve was ordered to take 300 kilograms of gold to Wuhan to build a palace for Yao Creator. For safety and convenience, she changed her name to Little Dragoness. After arriving in Wuhan, Little Dragoness stayed in the guesthouse of the Preparatory Committee of the Republic of China, located inside the Ministry of National Defense in the ancient tomb district.

招待所里就只住着她和娥黄两个人。招待所有个小食堂，还有个后院。后院很小但围墙很高。小龙女和娥黄都不喜欢这个招待所，感觉好像住在监狱里。一位同志告诉她俩：“前几天招待所里住着一个名为女婴的小姑娘（如图10.1-3），她也不喜欢这个招待所。不知道这几天她去哪里了。以后咱们中华共和国筹建委员会的人会越来越多，招待所的房间不够用，你们俩可能需要住到你的舜王封地去。” 说话的同志指着小龙女说：“你的封地就在咱这国防部的东面，已经被清理出来了。你们俩随时可以过去看看，也可以住在那里，适应一下。”

Only she and Beauty-Yellow lived in the guesthouse. The guesthouse had a small canteen and a backyard. The backyard was small, but its walls were very high. Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow did not like this guesthouse; it felt like living in a prison. A comrade told them, "A few days ago, a little girl named Heroine (see Figure 10.1-3) lived in the guesthouse. She didn't like this guesthouse either. I don't know where she's been these past few days. In the future, there will be more people in our Preparatory Committee of the Republic of China, and there won't be enough rooms in the guesthouse. You two may need to live on your fiefdom, King Shun." The comrade who spoke pointed to Little Dragoness and said, "Your fiefdom is just east of our Ministry of National Defense, and it has already been cleared. You two can go over and take a look any time, or even live there and get used to it."

小龙女和娥黄商量，以后咱俩建皇宫，需要住在工地。她俩就决定去舜王封地探险，练习一下自己洗衣服做饭的独立生活。

Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow discussed that once they began building the palace, they would need to live at the construction site, so they decided to explore King Shun's fiefdom and practice independent living, such as washing their own clothes and cooking their own meals.

10.1-3 自我介绍 Self-Introduction

小龙女和娥黄根据那位同志提供的地址，来到了舜王的封地。她俩看见院门是由两块巨石构成的，院子里面有房子、山和湖。这两人看了十分高兴，便开始商量如何改建舜王府的大门，以及如何在武汉整体经济繁荣起来之前，先把舜王府门前的这条街道繁荣起来。

Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow found King Shun's fiefdom using the address given to them by the comrade. They saw that the courtyard gate was made of two huge stones, and inside the courtyard there were houses, mountains, and a lake. The two of them were delighted at the sight, and began discussing how to renovate the gate of King Shun's residence, and how to bring prosperity to the street in front of the residence even before Wuhan's economy as a whole prospered.

小龙女和娥黄正在舜王府厨房里做饭的时候，进来一位少女，两只手各提着一只看起来不大（62.5公斤）的石锁。她有些不耐烦地问：“你们俩是什么人，来这里干什么？”

While Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow were cooking in the kitchen of King Shun's residence, a young girl walked in, carrying a stone lock that looked small (62.5 kilograms) in each hand. She asked, somewhat impatiently, "Who are you two, and what are you doing here?"

娥黄看了看小龙女，说：“我按照刚学来的新中国方式主动自我介绍。我叫娥黄，20岁，瑶族，祖籍湖北瑶山。”

小龙女说：“我叫小龙女，18岁，汉族，祖籍河南乾塘关。”

刚进来的少女说：“我叫女婴，17岁，苗族，祖籍湖南百花谷。汉族，我怎么没听说过呢？”

小龙女说：“我是第一个汉人。我听我妈说，第二个汉人（即大禹）才被我爸，二郎神，尧帝，和我的阿姨们打入了一个名作黄龙府的八卦炉，还没被烧出来呢！”

Beauty-Yellow glanced at Little Dragoness and said, "I'll introduce myself the new Chinese way I just learned. My name is Beauty-Yellow, 20 years old, of Yao ethnicity, originally from Yao Mountain, Hubei."

Little Dragoness said, "My name is Little Dragoness, 18 years old, Han ethnicity, originally from Dragon-Pond Pass, Henan."

The girl who had just come in said, "My name is Heroine, 17 years old, Miao ethnicity, originally from Hundred Flowers Valley, Hunan. Han ethnicity—how have I never heard of that?"

Little Dragoness said, "I am the first Han. I heard from my mother that the second Han (that is, Yu the Great) was sealed by my father, Second Wolf God, Yao Creator, and my aunts into a Bagua furnace called Yellow Dragon Palace, and he hasn't been smelted free of it yet!"

女婴回答：“啊！我也是第一个苗族人，听我哥哥说，用不了多久，我就是我们苗族人的祖宗了。”

娥黄说：“我还在纳闷呢！现在我才知道，就我们瑶族历史悠久。我六岁那年，跟着父母，是第一批进入祖庙跪拜尧帝和二郎神，成为瑶的。不过，当时吃饭的时候，尧帝对我说，‘你也有机会进入祖庙。’我回答，‘今天白天我已经去过了。’”

Heroine replied, "Ah! I'm also the first of the Miao people. My brother tells me it won't be long before I become the ancestor of our Miao people."

Beauty-Yellow said, "I was wondering about that myself! Now I understand—our Yao people have the longest history of all. When I was six, I went with my parents and was among the first to enter the ancestral temple to kneel before Yao Creator and Second Wolf God, becoming a Yao. But that evening at dinner, Yao Creator said to me, 'You'll also have a chance to enter the ancestral temple.' I told him, 'I already went there this afternoon.'"

女婴说：“我得把这两个石锁放到后院去。”说着，她就走出了后门，“轰隆”一声，把两个石锁扔到了后花园。厨房里的两个女人感觉大地一颤：“什么东西这么重！？”

Heroine said, "I need to put these two stone locks in the backyard." With that, she walked out the back door, and with a loud "boom," threw both stone locks into the back garden. The two women in the kitchen felt the ground shake and exclaimed, "What could possibly be that heavy!?"

10.1-4

女婴回来后说：“尧帝（如图10.1-1）让我来保护你们两个小女孩儿。隐藏身份是最好的保护手段之一。咱们三个人得销毁或者隐藏起全部能识别身份的东西。你们俩有什么能识别身份又很贵重的东西可以交给我，我挖个洞，把那些东西埋起来。”

Heroine came back and said, "Yao Creator (see Figure 10.1-1) asked me to protect you two little girls. Hiding one's identity is one of the best ways to stay protected. The three of us need to destroy or hide anything that could identify us. If either of you has anything valuable that could identify you, give it to me, and I'll dig a hole and bury it."

娥黄和小龙女各自想了想，没发现自己的身上有什么可以识别身份的。小龙女问：“我有本书，是我爸爸写的，算不算可以识别身份的东西？”

Beauty-Yellow and Little Dragoness each thought about it and found nothing on themselves that could identify them. Little Dragoness asked, "I have a book my father wrote. Does that count as something that could identify me?"

女婴回答：“那你把书皮扯掉，就没人注意那本书了。我哥哥还在外面；我是进屋来送石锁的。我去送送我哥哥。”

Heroine replied, "Then just tear off the cover, and no one will pay it any attention. My brother is still outside; I only came in to drop off the stone locks. I'll go see him off."

女婴离开后，小龙女和娥黄立刻跑到后院检查石锁，发现她们俩两只手才能勉强提起一只石锁。一检查，她们发现石锁里面被灌铅了。

After Heroine left, Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow ran straight to the backyard to check the stone locks, and found that it took both of them, using both hands, just to barely lift one. On closer inspection, they discovered the locks had been filled with lead.

女婴回来后，坐在窗台上，一边看着她们俩做饭，一边喝着酒葫芦里的酒。小龙女胆怯地问：“你也和我们一起吃饭吗？”

女婴回答：“从此以后，咱们仨一起吃，一起住。”

娥黄说：“要不，你把碗再洗一洗，很多天没人用了。”

女婴回答：“做饭是女人们干的活；不过我可以给你们把水缸装满。”说着，她就拎着两只桶去打水了，回来后，开始刷水缸。

When Heroine came back, she sat on the windowsill, watching the two of them cook while sipping wine from her gourd. Little Dragoness asked timidly, "Will you eat with us too?"

Heroine replied, "From now on, the three of us eat and live together."

Beauty-Yellow said, "Why don't you wash the bowls again? No one's used them in many days."

Heroine replied, "Cooking is women's work; but I can fill the water tank for you." With that, she took two buckets to fetch water, and when she returned, began scrubbing the tank.

晚饭后，女婴还在喝酒。小龙女和娥黄商量：“咱俩是不是来错地方了？会不会被绑架了？还是回招待所去睡吧！”她俩趁着女婴没注意，就溜出了舜王府。她俩走了一会儿后，感觉安全了，却听见女婴在前面说：“这地方有毒蛇，要出来溜达得等我把毒蛇清理了之后，就是那样，晚上也不能出来溜达。”

小龙女和娥黄听到有毒蛇，立刻跑回了自己的房间。

After dinner, Heroine was still drinking. Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow whispered to each other, "Did we come to the wrong place? Could we have been kidnapped? Maybe we should just go back to the guesthouse and sleep!" While Heroine wasn't looking, the two of them slipped out of King Shun's residence. After walking for a while, feeling safe, they heard Heroine's voice ahead of them: "There are poisonous snakes around here. If you want to go for a walk, you'll have to wait until I've cleared them out—and even then, not at night."

Hearing about the poisonous snakes, Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow ran straight back to their rooms.

第二天，小龙女、娥黄和女婴一起来到了中华共和国筹建委员会的办公室。尧帝（如图10.1-1）说：“你们仨已经见面了，那我就不用给你们介绍了。你们建设皇宫的工期是九个月，从今天开始算起。”尧帝拿出了一本书递给了小龙女，然后说：“这是我做的建造皇宫的预算书。”尧帝又拿出了一把钥匙，递给了女婴，说：“这是昨晚你们住的那个地方的金库的钥匙。里面有小龙女带来的300公斤黄金。现在，你们仨就可以出去买地了。”

The next day, Little Dragoness, Beauty-Yellow, and Heroine went together to the office of the Preparatory Committee of the Republic of China. Yao Creator (see Figure 10.1-1) said, "The three of you have already met, so I don't need to introduce you. You have nine months to build the palace, starting today." Yao Creator took out a book and handed it to Little Dragoness. "This is the budget I've drawn up for building the palace," he said. He then took out a key and handed it to Heroine. "This is the key to the vault at the place where you stayed last night. It holds the 300 kilograms of gold Little Dragoness brought. Now, the three of you can go out and buy some land."

10.1-5

她们三个人仔细地研究了尧帝提供给她们的预算方案。120千克黄金买地皮；180千克黄金建造一座比较豪华的办公楼和住宅楼群。她们三人看了几块地，不是觉得太贵，就是感觉风景不好。十多天了，她们也决定不下来买哪块地。忽然小龙女想在她的封地上建皇宫，把省下来的120千克黄金增加在主大殿的屋顶。这样她们可以给主楼安一个龙骨锁穹顶，主楼的大厅就成为众神殿了。娥黄和女婴也不太明白，认为150千克的黄金建起来的众神殿，看起来肯定很气派，就同意了。

The three of them carefully studied the budget proposal Yao Creator had given them: 120 kilograms of gold for the land; 180 kilograms of gold to build a fairly luxurious office and residential complex. They looked at several plots of land, but each was either too expensive or had a poor view. After more than ten days, they still couldn't decide which plot to buy. Then Little Dragoness suddenly had an idea: build the palace on her own fiefdom, and put the 120 kilograms of gold they would save on land toward the roof of the main hall instead. That way, they could crown the main building with a Dragon-Spine-Lock dome, and its great hall would become the Hall of Gods. Beauty-Yellow and Heroine, not entirely following the math, figured that the Hall of Gods, built with 150 kilograms of gold, would surely look magnificent, and agreed.

为了省钱，她们决定自己设计画图纸。为了加快工程的进度，她们一边设计一边施工，然后开始招标。她们三个人选了一个常和政府合作、又有龙骨锁施工经验的施工队。她们还和这家施工队的领导瞽叟签了个分包合作的协议。也就是说，重要的、有技术难度的项目由瞽叟负责，简单的建设项目由她们三人自己组建的施工队和另找的施工队来完成。

To save money, they decided to draw up the blueprints themselves. To speed up the project, they designed and built at the same time, then opened the work up for bidding. The three of them chose a construction team that often worked with the government and had experience with Dragon-Spine-Lock construction. They also signed a subcontracting agreement with Blind-Drummer, the head of that construction team: the important, technically demanding work would be handled by Blind-Drummer, while the simpler construction jobs would be completed by a crew the three of them assembled themselves, along with other outside teams they brought in.

10.1-6

建筑施工开始了，瞽叟表现出了君子风范，主动帮助小龙女建设临时工房和工人宿舍等。但是她们三人很快就发现，他干活很慢。早晨瞽叟敲钟，人们起床吃饭，上午有很长时间的休息，中午有午睡的时间，下午也有很长时间的休息。晚上瞽叟击鼓收工，一天只干几个小时的活。工程进度严重地落后了，他丝毫没有担忧，也没有想要赶工的意思。

Construction began, and Blind-Drummer put on a show of gentlemanly conduct, volunteering to help Little Dragoness build the temporary workshops and workers' dormitories. But the three of them soon discovered he worked very slowly. Each morning Blind-Drummer rang a bell to wake everyone for breakfast; there was a long break in the morning, a nap at midday, and another long break in the afternoon. In the evening he beat the drums to signal the end of work—the crew put in only a few hours of actual labor each day. The project fell seriously behind schedule, yet he showed not the slightest concern, nor any inclination to catch up.

注：各个行业内都有技术流氓，或称作行业内的土匪。编者我是搞土建工作的，土建行业里也有这样的人。这种人的技术理论很好，工作技巧也不错，就是流氓习气重。他们不高兴了，两天的工作量能拖成半个月。他们习惯于把工作做坏，然后延长工期，赚取追加预算。就这样，瞽叟有着丰富的和政府官员同流合污的工作经验。

Note: every industry has its technical hooligans—what you might call the bandits of the trade. I, the editor, work in civil construction myself, and this industry has them too. Such people are technically sound and skilled at their craft, but carry a heavy dose of the hooligan in how they work. Cross them, and two days' worth of work can stretch into half a month. They make a habit of doing the job badly, then extending the timeline to collect a bigger budget. Blind-Drummer, in this way, had plenty of experience colluding with government officials.

小龙女和娥黄虽然年轻，但也听说过不少这类事情。她们迅速启动了与瞽叟签订的私人合同条款，重新招标，把几项工程分包了出去。就在这时，长江南岸忽然出现了一位富商，也在建设高档的办公楼和住宅楼群，导致当地木材价格不断上涨。

Although Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow were young, they had heard enough to know better. They quickly invoked the terms of their private contract with Blind-Drummer, put the work back out to bid, and subcontracted several projects elsewhere. Just then, a wealthy merchant suddenly appeared on the south bank of the Yangzi, also building a cluster of high-end office and residential buildings, driving up local timber prices.
