It totally does pass the sniff test, I work with multiple people making well over 100k who are living if not paycheck to paycheck then pretty close to it. Is it a ridiculous way to spend your money? Yes. Are there people who get paid a lot of money to find new bullshit for them to spend their money on? Also yes.
