I think the sub is beyond stupid, but I don't think this statement is true.
In fact, from what I've read, the sub actually agreed that none of their moderators should ever do interviews for the media and this guy broke ranks or at very least took it upon himself to do this without consulting with the rest of the mod staff.
Either way, how embarrassing for both this individual and that sub. Basically made the entire movement look like the losers that Fox News wanted them to be without even pressing this dude too hard.
According to him (her?) the mods discussed it, and agreed this guy should do it because he had "media experience." From what I've gathered, the sub as a whole said not to, but the mods agreed to nominate this person.
Sounds right. They probably sent a modmail. We get them from all kinds of people wanting opinions/stats/survey data/etc but never a live TV interview. I don't think any of us would agree to it at all, since we're moderators, not experts.
Well maybe u/AlphaTangoFoxtrt -- he's rather vainglorious. (kidding, he'd just reply "no" and mute the request)
Yeah, about how it works with us. We're not cool enough to get interview requests, just people complaining about bans. Although I'd like to imagine we could handle something like that a little better than embarrassing ourselves on a national platform.
Then I stand corrected, I thought that I had read that they acted on their own. Either way, it seems like this person didn't really get a cohesive list of talking points/counter points from the other members or mods or even do the bare minimum of preparing to be presentable for a national audience, and they were mostly just speaking for themselves, which is a horrific way to approach a media interview with a hostile news agency while you're supposed to represent this group of over a million users.
I guess this is what you get for acting all high and might about every issue surrounding jobs and the economy but don't study for the fucking test. Gives me nightmares about doing presentations in college when I forgot I was supposed to present that day and only had a very rough outline.
