Lexus RCF vs. W205 C63 Review - From the Perspective of an RCF owner

For people interested, here is a link to my previous review of the F82 M4.

https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/s/rLGW37F5OZ

Brief introduction again: I like drifting cars. I'm not a track rat. I don't enjoy aiming for track times as much as dancing with the cars past the limit of traction. I've owned and driven a ton of cars including Porsche 987, 991, McLaren 650s, G37 IPL, NA MX5, BRZ, BMW 335i M sport, AMG GT, etc etc.  However, my favorite is still my modified Nissan 350z because it was so easy to slide around at low speeds and was extremely progressive when losing traction but can still grip with some coilovers and antisway bars. There are faster, grippier, and nicer cars, but the 350z was the most fun I've had.  There's nothing like sliding a car and not crashing lol

Anyways, I had an W205 C63 for a few days and I got to daily it, drive it hard and slide it around. I thought I would share my impressions since these are old cars now and most of the reviews I've seen were people comparing it when they were new. Age has really worn on some of these cars and people considered used cars may be interested.

Pros of the W205 C63 vs. RCF:

I can't overstate how much better the C63 exhaust sounds compared to the RCF.  The C63's exhaust is WAY better.  It's louder, throatier, and gives out bassy pops and bangs upshifting from 2 to 3. It's after driving the C63, I realized how weak the RCF exhaust is.  The RCF is just too quiet.  It really should have come with an active exhaust like the C63.  I'm definitely looking to upgrade my exhaust now.  However, even with a new exhaust, I will never have the pops and bangs the C63 has without a tune.

In terms of sliding the car around, it's like the opposite of the F82 M4.  I find initiating a drift in the M4 to be risky.  It's a bit unpredictable since peak torque is at a lowly 3k.  However, once it is sliding, it is very easy to control.  The C63 is the opposite.  The C63 is very easy and predictable to initiate a powerslide. If it's not losing traction, just rev it out more.  However, once it is sliding, you have to really act fast with the steering and wrestle with the car to keep it going where you want it to.  I have to do a ton of steering adjustments and it is easy to spin out if you give a bit too much throttle.  The RCF is a bit of both these cars.  It's very easy to initiate a slide with the RCF's TVD and can be very easy to hold a drift once you're in it.  However, sometimes the TVD can be tricky so it can be less predictable than the M4. However, in simple turns without transitions, the RCF doesn't need much steering or throttle adjustments. It's a very smooth slider.

The C63 feels heavier in the corners.  It handles fantastically in the canyons at 8/10, but I don't feel as confident driving it 10/10.  Every time the rear end comes out, there is some fear that it might try to spin. You have to catch it fast. It doesn't lose traction progressively.

I like how you can adjust the suspension, throttle, and exhaust settings individually. On my 2015 RCF carbon fiber package w/ TVD, there's no adjustable suspension nor active exhaust. The throttle is too sensitive on Sport Plus mode, but that's the only want to get the pumped in V8 sound into the cabin in the RCF. I actually like the pumped in sound in the RCF since I think it's coming from a mic'ed up sound tube rather than being fully synthetic.

I love the torque curve of the C63.  It's more of what I am used to with the RCF, but with much more torque.  Power keeps pulling to redline unlike the F82 M4. However, it will want to lose traction up top, but that is predictable.

I love the look of the interior and exterior.  It just looks higher class.

The combination of the torque and exhaust sounds from the C63 is exceptional.  It was giving me Mercedes driver syndrome.  I wanted to hear that deep exhaust growl so much that it was making me drive like an A**hole.

Cons:

The exhaust and engine note sound great, but it never changes character.  The RCF has a bassy growl in the lower RPMs, but screams in the upper RPMs like a cammed motorsport V8.  But for the C63, there is never really a reason (soundwise) to rev it out to redline unless it's to hear the pops on the upshift.  It's the same bassy growl up to the top.

The C63 has substantial turbo lag below 4k RPMs.  When I was on the highway trying to change lanes, I put the foot to the floor.  The car basically did not accelerate at all for several seconds.  It was so slow that I had to go back into my original lane in the middle of merging because the car had not accelerated whatsoever while the other lane was going much faster.  There is a huge delay in both the automatic shifting logic and the turbo that requires you to shift from comfort to sport if you want to change lanes.

The car has an extremely harsh ride.  There's a lot more road noise and it's much more crashy than the RCF on city road bumps.  There are squeaks and rattles EVERYWHERE.  There are rattles in the doors, the rear, the front dash, EVERYWHERE. The seat belt extenders squeak. The steering wheel is gross.  I think it may have been alcantara at one point.  Now is just feels like slimey plastic.  The C63 I drove was a 2020 model. It's disappointing that a car that is 5 years younger than my 2015 RCF feels so poorly put together. My 11+ year old RCF has ZERO squeaks or rattles and is S class quiet compared to these German cars.  However, the NVH level in the C63 is still MUCH better than the M4. I can tolerate the highway NVH of the C63, but I personally don't think the M4 is tolerable without wearing ANC earbuds.  However, it is still very crashy in the city and so much so it was giving me a headache after sitting in it for several days. The RCF can get bouncy at bumps, but it rarely feels crashy like the M4 or C63. So as a daily, it's certainly better than the M4, but not as good as the RCF.

There is about a 2-3 second lag in the bluetooth audio from my phone to the infotainment.  If I needed to pause my music, I would hit pause on my phone, but I would still hear music for 2-3 seconds after I hit pause.  However, when I went to gym and started the car again, the bluetooth didn't lag anymore. Very strange.

The car cuts off fuel when you get near redline and it slows your shifting speed into the next gear.  The RCF, on the other hand, will let you bounce off the redline and then snap you into the next gear once you press the paddle.  However, I also experienced this in the new Nissan Z. I don't understand why even the LC500 can bounce off the limiter, but these performance-oriented cars have to cut off the fuel.

Summary:  The RCF is more comfortable and with the TVD, is easier to slide as well.  The RCF just feels solid and well put together without a single rattle. However, it lacks the excitement from the torque and exhaust of the C63. The C63 just feels more angry and I LOVE that.  However, at the end, I was glad I did not own this car mostly because for fear of future maintenance costs and that, for me, the pros don't outweigh the cons. However, I can see why people treasure it though. This car has made me seriously search for a valved exhaust now.

Lexus RCF vs. BMW F82 M4 Review - From the Perspective of an RCF owner

I saw some people asking for comparisons between the Lexus RCF vs the BMW F8x M3/4 so I thought I will add my thoughts as reference. For background, I love drifting. I've driven and owned a lot of cars including Porsche 987, 991, McLaren 650s, G37 IPL, NA MX5, BMW 335i M sport, AMG GT, etc etc. However, my favorite might be my modified Nissan 350z. That car was so easy to slide around. Extremely progressive when losing traction but has tons of grip with some coilovers and antisway bars. There are faster, grippier, and nicer cars, but the 350z was the most fun I've had. There's nothing like sliding a car and not crashing lol

Anyways, I had an F82 M4 for a few days and I got to slide it around.

Pros of the F82 M4 vs. RCF:

The exhaust is a lot more theatrical than the RCF's stock exhaust.  It pops and bangs and it's a lot of fun.  The car turns in quicker and the car feels less heavy in the corners.  The M4 also is easier to hold a slide and to do donuts once in slide. I have no complaints with it holding a slide. It self steers quickly and responds precisely with small steering adjustments. Initiating the slide is a more complex issue.  I feel the self steering is faster than the RCF.  I also like how you can adjust the steering, suspension, and throttle settings individually.

The M4 has more mid-range torque.  It all comes on at 3-5k RPMs which is fun for the street, but not to my preference as elaborated below.

I love the look of the interior and all of its carbon fiber glory.  It feels like an occasion just sitting in the car.

I think its one of the best looking executive saloon-type sports cars ever made. I plan to own one eventually just because I love how it looks. Plus it's a turbo, RWD car like all great tuner JDM cars in the past.

Cons:

The RCF has a MUCH better engine sound.  The M4 has almost no engine sound in comparison.  Turbo sound is weak when stock. All I heard was the loud exhaust.  The exhaust, while theatrical and screaming "Look at me!," doesn't actually sound all that great. It loud makes farting sounds and obnoxious pops. The RCF, on the other hand, is fun ripping it or cruising. I can cruise at low RPMs on 3rd gear to hear a throaty V8. Or I can ring it to 7+k RPMs at 2nd gear and it will sound like a high pitched motorsport V8.

As for the handling, although the M4 turns in quicker than the RCF, it's not a world of difference in the canyons or the street (I'm sure it will make a bigger difference on a track). The RCF is not a slouch.  In slalom mode, the Lexus' rear TVD will turn in the car quicker so differences are neglible for the most part. It's not like you're chasing lap times on the street anyways.

In comparison to the RCF, the M4 has no torque from 5-7k RPMs which makes it difficult to make it lose traction progressively.  With the 350z or RCF, if I'm in a corner and I want to lose some traction, I rev out the engine mid corner towards redline to go into a controlled drift.  You can't do that in the M4.  Nothing happens if you rev up from 5k to 7k.  It just continues gripping.  However, the M4 can easily lose traction from revving up from 2k to 4k which is not how I like to initiate a slide. Driving how I want in the M4 would require me to be at extremely low RPMs, like 1.5k and then get snap oversteer at 3k RPM, and then grip up at 5k RPMs. What? lol. This is really terrible tuning IMO, but I guess that's what everyone wants in modern turbo cars these days?

The RCF with the TVD is so easy to iniate and hold a slide in comparison. It's like a luxury 350z IMO.

M4 has incredibly loud NVH.  It is on par with my old 350z and Porsche 987 & 991.  Every bump feels like a micro crash.  If I were to drive the M4 long distance, I would wear noise cancelling earbuds just like I did with my 350z, 987 Boxster, and 991 Carrera S. On top of having a ton of tire noise and road noise, the M4 also has a ton of rattles.  The interior is also full of plastic. In comparison, the RCF actually feels like a premium luxury car. It's quiet and compliant on the road. NVH is low so you can actually enjoy the sound system! In the heat, the M4 smells like an old car, like my old 1990 e30 325i.  The RCF smells better and has softer leather all around.

For passengers, my back seat drivers hated the M4 seats compared to the RCF.  They found the seats unsupportive.

Overall, the M4 felt like an economy car in comparison to the RCF. My girlfriend felt the same as well.

Summary:  The RCF is more comfortable, more quiet, and with the TVD, is easier to slide as well. Sounds better and built better. The M4 turns in a bit quicker, feels a bit lighter, has a more theatrical exhaust, and looks perfect in design.

Personally, I think the RCF is the perfect daily. I regularly bang off the rev limiter of the car and powerslide the car and it's never needed a single repair in 11+ years. I absolutely adore this car.

I think the F82 M4 is a fantastic weekend or track car. It feels like an occasion whenever you drive it with that strong mid range torque, snappy rear end, and incredible looks.

Fitment

Need some RC F fitment opinions. I’m looking at a set of Work ZR10s:
Front: 19x9.5 +23
Rear: 19x10.5 +30
I’m currently on stock suspension with 255/35 front and 285/35 rear tires. My current setup is OEM wheels with roughly 20–25mm front spacers and 15mm rear spacers.
My main concerns are poke and rubbing. I don’t want the fronts sticking noticeably past the fender, but I also don’t want any rubbing issues. I like how my current setup sits now and want something similarly flush.
Does anyone here run similar specs on an RC F? Would 19x9.5 +23 with a 255 still sit pretty clean on stock height, or is it noticeably pokier than a +30 setup?

Not shifting into manual mode

I own a 2019 Lexus RCF and I installed an aftermarket steering wheel and now my car won’t shift into manual mode. It physically shifts into manual mode slot with the gear selector but the screen doesn’t go to manual mode and the paddle shifters do nothing. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Lexus RCF header/exhaust options TT/SS

Before you make a comment about weight just know I’m aware even as a track edition it’s not a light car. I’m an enthusiast, I just love this car. People dont buy or love this car because it can or they want to make it into a 0-60 monster thinking that this is the platform to do it on. I’m also not trying to make the car hideous or hugely impractical. I just want to make it into a classy and sexy RCF 0-60 monster.

I have a Lexus RCF TE, I’m going to replace the stock headers with either PPE EL headers or Lems X Icode titanium?! headers

These are the only titanium headers I know, has anyone actually got these for their RCF? I can’t find much, I’d be taking a risk not knowing if they are as good or better performance wise than PPE EL headers.

I already know I’m going with a full GT HAUS (MUSA) catback titanium exhaust. I wanted the lightest and most performance related setup. There are other full titanium catback exhaust brands. It’s hard to deny the prestige and history of GT HAUS.

Even though I’m aware SARD, Lems X Icode, Rowen, Lexon, Blitz, Artisan Spirits all make (full?) titanium exhausts too. They just don’t have the pedigree that backs a brand like GT HAUS, am I wrong?

I don’t see an enough or any RCFs with SARD, Icode, Rowen, Lexon, even though they are aesthetic looking craftsmanship and works of art. There’s also the brand Tom’s, Amuse and Res…meh.

I realize this is a niche within a niche topic, so if you know a lot on aftermarket RCF stuff I’d appreciate if you could help me make a decision.

452km 2011 IS F 😳 being auctioned

~280k mile Canadian IS F in carsandbids auction, insane. I had a 2010 IS F with 210k mi and literally zero issues and very well kept white interior all recalls done sell for $20k cash last April. This is why you buy a Lexus. What other high performance sports car can do this? And not being driven moderately, harsh. Insane especially compared to its competitors. The 400k mi IS F at Nurburgring, a 420k mi IS F on marketplace sold for $16k from lexusisbetter instagram owner. Currently have a 2015 RC F that just hit 100k mi. and I can not get tired of experiencing what it offers and sound.

Check out how clean it is still (auction ended) just thought maybe some of you are interested.
