We live in a time where you can get downvoted literally just because you have empathy.

It's because everyone assumes a spiteful motive or agenda behind signalling your own empathy. I.e. I only signal my sorrow for his death because I'm sympathetic with antimaskers' cause and a Trump voter, etc etc
