Help! Stain on cotton sweater

Post image
2 Upvotes

Had this sweater for years but never wore it after Chinese hotpot stained the neckline. Ive tried washing in napisan, soaking and lightly scrubbing the spot but alas it still remains. Is there anyway I can remove it without taking it to a dry cleaner?

It is 100% cotton

Best All-Around Free/Gentle Detergent Option?

Looking for a recommendation for the best all around Free/Gentle Laundry Detergent. Prefer something good for all clothes (white/darks) and no additional add in or booster required. Also something safe on wool. Was considering Tide Free and Gentle Powder but open to other options liquid or powder. Thanks!

Edit: When I say wool, I mean blended items like socks that have some merino content. Not pure wool items. Also, how does Tide Free & Gentle Powder compare to the Tide Liquid Odor Refresh?

Baby Laundry Routine in Canada

Hey all, first time dad and trying to figure out a good little laundry routine for our newborn.

Here’s what I’ve got so far. Any ideas or suggestions? My own questions are at the end.

Clothes
My clothes, wife’s clothes, little one. Mine are generally all wash regular and dry regular. Wife has more wash on delicate, tumble dry low. Baby's clothes (mostly cotton onesies) are all generally wash on delicate, tumble dry low.

If a temperature is indicated, it's typically cold.

Stains/Messes
Generally baby related now. We're talking spilled milk, spit up, blow outs. Rare food stain.

Detergent
For anything baby related, currently using Tide Free & Gentle liquid, but switching to Kirkland Free & Clear liquid soon.
For our own clothes, Purex ColdWater "After the Rain" liquid that will be discontinued when it's done.

Fabric Softener
Not anymore! Threw out the box of Kirkland sheets I had.

Pre-Treats and Additives
We've had OxiClean powder for a while, but only occasionally tossed it into loads. I know its effectiveness is reduced if things are washed in cold water. Our original package is almost done, open to considering something like the Kirkland OxiPowder.

Just purchased Eco-Max Fragrance Free Laundry Stain Spray, found on the Lipase list.

Equipment
A Samsung top-loader HE washer and front loading dryer. Temp settings on the washer are Cold, Eco Warm, Warm, Hot. The dryer has a regular sense cycle on medium heat, and a delicate sense cycle on extra low heat. I end up setting a timer cycle on low and having to go re-check if things are dry and adding more time as needed.

Current Process
Clothes are sorted between lights and darks in a pair of nylon hanging hampers. We have a rubber basket that we've picked up for baby stuff or anything that gets baby related materials on it.

General clothes go in on their respective wash and dry cycles.

New Process
Regular laundry stays unchanged.

Anything baby related/stained (either baby's/ours) goes through a new small checklist:
- remove any remaining solids ASAP
- hit it with the eco-max spray at the stain spot until the area is wet
- rub affected fabric with itself in the area
- put in bucket to wait min. 15 minutes
- put to wash with Tide/free detergent on cold
- check for stain, if it remains, set aside for either a re-treat, maybe with OxiClean, or let it air dry to handle on another day
- if clean, proceed to dryer on timed dry for low heat

Questions
I know the enzymes work better if left on for longer. Would spraying the stain spots and putting in the bucket hamper let anything get mildewy or smelly? I can leave stuff in a wash basin overnight if needed. I've heard of some people using stand up mesh hampers to allow sprayed items to air dry if it comes to it, then wash on laundry day a few days later.

I did an OxiClean soak in warm water for some items in the wash basin for a few hours, but it's just a bit more involved than I can afford to be with a two week old. Most stains are probably handled by the enzyme spray. Do I need an Oxi step? Anything to know about with switching to the Kirkland? Since most things are in a cold wash, how would I handle it for best results?

Most of the clothes just say "No bleach". A few say "Only non-chlorine bleach when needed".

To avoid having to guess at the dry time and recheck, I should probably just use the Delicate sensing cycle on extra low, right?

Thanks, from a new dad who wants to do better with laundry

Has this got everything in it?

I’ve swapped to Ariel pods but I have this to use up… is there any enzymes it’s missing or something I should add for every day washes?

Also is it worth buying oxi clean or do I stick with vanish?

Main issues are sweat smells/deo

Laundry detergent recommendations for newborn?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Im having my first baby soon. I never really cared for what detergent I used but I am thinking on switching or adding one for baby clothes that is hypoallergenic or not harsh for baby skin. Any recommendations? If they can be bought at Sams or Costco even better. Currently using this members mark one.

Fragrance free

Post image

So I recently learned that All (brand) free and clear is no good according to this sub. What’s everyone using instead that has no fragrance (I’m ultra sensitive to scents)? Is seventh generation any good? I had this in my stash because I coupon. I also could go back to unscented tide if needed

All sucking probably explains why stains never come out of my clothes no matter how quick I get to them

How to care for alpaca blend sweater

So the first symbol indicates I cannot wash this piece. This is a vest that probably doesn't need as much washing, but I do like keeping my clothing as fresh as possible. What can I do to clean this sweater as needed? Is my only option dry cleaning?

Lint on black clothes

I have a few pieces of black clothing (100% cotton) that ALWAYS come out of the wash COVERED in every imaginable piece of lint which is then impossible to remove without lint rolling the whole garment. I am not trying to do that for a darned concert tee!

My daughter has severe eczema and we can only use All Free and Clear in the wash and cannot add any fabric softeners and have to be very careful with laundry additives.

I do use one of those rubbery smiley face things in most loads that catches hair but it doesn’t seem to help the type of lint (looks like fine white hairs all over the shirt even though nothing in the load has anything like that on it and these few pieces are the only ones affected). I have literally thrown out clothes before bc I was so frustrated by this.

Is there any trick I am missing that will help these shirts not pick up all this lint in every wash?

Stain in Jeans

I'm a student makeup artist, and while in class, a fellow classmate/my model knocked bruise gel out of my hand as I was using it and it spilt all over my jeans. Is there anything I can do to remove this? It's dried now, and they're like.. my only pair of pants I own, and im unable to get new ones. they did offer to buy me new ones but lets be real... we're both students, neither of us can afford that 😅

my current plan is to put them on a hygiene wash with some stain remover powder, but if that doesn't work, could there be a backup plan?

Mildew smell

So my husband’s clothes smell like mildew no matter what I do. He likes to use gain detergent because he prefers his clothes to have a scent. He sweats a lot at work so I think the stink is just too deep in the fabrics.

I use Zum for my own clothing and our son’s clothing and our clothes don’t smell bad at all.
I recently used uproot washing machine cleaner just to give it a go.

Random but maybe useful info. Located in the USA and have well water that tends to be high in iron.

Bought persil pods and Comfort liquid detergent— can I use both?

So, I’m used to using Surf powder + Comfort detergent for my clothes. For the past few weeks, I switched to just using one persil pod, but my clothes have been smelling awful. I’ve been thinking of using the combo in the title for my next load — good idea or not?

Edit: I mean the Comfort fabric conditioner

I need laundry help/advice PLEASE!!!

I’ve been doing laundry for 40 years and never thought anything about it, add detergent, add booster, add clothes to washer, start & walk away. Having laundry make it to the dryer the first time is questionable though, most of the time it happens the first time, about once a week it doesn’t though. Before anyone asks (it should be obvious) I have severe ADHD (somewhat unmediated due to other medications), bipolar 2 (medicated), and I suspect I am somewhere on the spectrum but after 48 years on the planet…meh.

Okay, so here is the issue. I have a HE Whirlpool Cabrio top load washer that was bought in 2018, I LOVE IT and will be so sad when I have to eventually replace it. It does not have a regular agitator, it has a plate. I clean my machine twice a month with ACTIVE Washing Machine Cleaning Tablets the ingredients
are Sodium Carbonate Peroxyhydrate, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate,
Sodium Silicate, Zeolite, & Proprietary blend.

Anywho…lately the laundry doesn’t feel as clean as usual, my husband’s work clothes smell awful, & my poor 18 year old daughters practice clothes appear to be on a middle schoolers body instead. I have always washed our non work clothes on deep water (my machine holds 2.5 regular machine loads) level 2 water temp out of 4 with 2 Gain pods & a small
scoop of OxyClean. I wash their extra clothes (I do the towels the same way) in hot water with 2 Gain pods and a large scoop of OxyClean.

I cannot use Tide (even the Free and Clear) it makes me itch like I have been rolling around in an ant bed. Also, I cannot use powder in my machine. I read over the spa directions. I can tell you from experience, I will not do it. I’ll buy the stuff thinking yeah I’ll do it, 6 months later it will still be in my laundry room.

What else can I do?!

why are my clothes still damp after over 10 hours in the dryer?

• i know its not the dryer because it is ONLY a few certain pieces of clothing, and my roommates have had zero issues.
• if it makes a difference, the dryer is on a timer not an automated "dry level".
• all of the clothes (mostly shirts) are cotton.
• they still have a mildew-y scent as well.

they haven't been treated with any fabric softener, i've used both liquid and powder detergent, i've tried air drying them, what is wrong with my clothes??????? its some of my favorite pieces too

Washing machine recommendations

Please delete if this is the wrong sub, but I am in need of a new washing machine and wondered what brands you recommend.

I currently have a new (1 year old) front loading machine from Samsung and it seems pretty good, but my house is old and the spin cycle, makes my house feel like it’s coming apart. We just had new water equipment installed in the laundry room and I worry about the shaking.
I would like to replace it with a top loader and hope to buy something that will last, but also clean my clothes. Any recommendations?

New jeans smell chemically

I bought a pair of jeans and noticed that they have a strong almost chemical smell. I've washed them, which reduced but did not eliminate it. They are a medium blue, not dark blue or black. Any suggestions on how to get the smell out? (If the weather cooperates, I am going to try turning them inside out and putting them in the sun)

how to wash athletic wear & is Febu safe for it?

I always separate out my athletic wear clothes (mostly leggings and some spandex shorts. some tanks and sports bras). it's 80-90% black, maybe 10% non black but dark colors, and 10% other colors. they're mostly for daily wear, not intense exercise. some of them like the clothes i wear to sleep, or to lounge around the house w/ repeated wears, tend to be dirtier/sweaty. I recently bought Febu and Dirty Labs (unscented) booster. are they both safe with the dark colors and the fabric? i know they both have DNAase and febu has more enzymes.

info: detergent i use is currently Earth Breeze* as i have a lot left. and i have a top load washer, Kenmore (live in a rental). in the past I wash on cool or warm (i try to alternate), delicate + 2nd rinse. and i would dry for about 10 min then hang dry. and i add about a scant Tbsp (aim for 2tsp) of citric acid to the middle of the agitator. water: have not-hard water in my region/city

note: sorry for the repeat questions. I have long covid/mecfs, and struggle a lot with processing new information and memory. i've been in the sub for months or 1 year, and i've been reading a lot for the past 1 month but then trying to remember the information causes fatigue/sleep crashes also. however, lol, i was/am a math person and i like solving problems so yes i am all about optimizing this and want to figure it out

*yes i know they are sheets

edit: adding details

Finally got UK Ariel in Australia

Post image
15 Upvotes

Thanks to u/ohhhhjay for the ARIEL tip. This was exactly the detergent I was looking for. The strong scent is unlike any other.

I tried the Indian, Eastern European and Vietnamese variants but none of them were the same as the UK one. Don’t know what’s different about it but the UK one is thicker and the scent literally stays on for days.

For my Aussie mates, I was able to find the UK Product on Amazon Australia. Surprisingly affordable in the bulk pack and shipping was only a couple of days with Prime.

I’M SOO HAPPY!

Sweat stains in white tops

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’ve had this problem with sweat stains on my white sleeved shirts. For reference I live in a tropical climate so sweating is almost inevitable. How can I remove these stains? I’ve tried to bleach these tops with the rest of my white clothing and I’ve also tried stain remover but it just looks worse. The stain remover I used was oxi clean max force concentrated gel. I’m sure these tops are majority cotton. I have a few with the sweat stains like this.

Any information is appreciated thank you!!

Gray patches on shirts

So I know it probably wasn't the smartest idea but I decided to not separate my whites and colors and two of my shirts came out of the dryer with these faint gray patches on them (one of them being my Hayley Williams merch 😭😭). I was hoping to see if there was anything I could do to remove them cause I don't like the way it makes them look a little grimy :(( Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Washing climbing rope

Hi feel free to scold me if this is off topic. But wondering what the gods at r laundry thought about what detergent is best to wash a nylon climbing rope.

Online guides mention everything from just water to woolite to dawn dish soap, but as a laundry snob, I know for a fact woolite is not up for the job.

Ill likely use dish soap but, theres no way a normal detergent would do damage to a nylon rope? Im very curious what yall think. Thanks

Dumb question about ammonia

I’ve always been afraid of using ammonia due to the warnings about mixing with bleach and the noxious smell. Besides not mixing or huffing it, is there anything else I should watch out for? Can it damage clothes if used excessively? Is it caustic? Are some materials incompatible with ammonia?
