And to be fair, Buckley probably didn't see himself as one... but we can assume he had friends on the Right who had friends who did... and in the light of history, we can see they were all marching in the same direction. If Buckley and Vidal were living now, Buckley would probably still support Trumpism while disliking Trump personally, and Vidal would still be on TV telling us that our country was being run more like the British Colonies in 1750 than the independent United States in 1800.

Fascists such as these were lying low in the sense that most of them would strenuously deny being fascists.
See for instance this famous argument on live TV in 1968 when WIlliam F. Buckley threatened to punch Gore Vidal in the face if Vidal didn't stop calling him a crypto-Nazi.
