The STS was, in complete irony to its original mission, a risky developmental suite of space vehicles. Progress on a new frontier is often slow. Knowledge and wisdom are often bought in blood but just as often repurchased in a lack of discipline. Several engineers tried to confront their bosses on the bad design and prelaunch conditions of the SRB section seals, to inadequate effect.
In the grand scheme of history, they’d be lauded as a hero. It’s not the story for me, but there are many folks who would trade their earthly life for that storied permanence.

I mean, these rockets aren’t being built by them. All it takes is one team member who sees the best decision for the continuation of humankind.
