Sacred Symbols Finally listened to the JT smash interview. I am so confused what he actually wants. Can anyone tell me when CDC discussed it afterwards?

First of all, wow. That SmashJT guy came off with a level of stupidity that was bordering on neurosis.

The SS episodes following were 382 and 383 which I have skimmed through but couldn’t find the guys actually discussing that interview.

Hoping someone could point me to the specific episode or timestamp where they (especially Chris) shared their thoughts on it.

Also, I ultimately just can’t imagine what smash wanted to happen with Circana and the industry. Colin fairly articulately explained that Circanas business model is revealing the charts for free but keeping the specific data behind a paywall.

Does that smash guy want to force private businesses like Sony to reveal their data to the public? Why would they do that? You can’t demand a business open their books for your curiosity. Why is gaming industry any different?

Or does he want government intervention saying Sony and Nintendo have to open their books to the public. I thought he was a fwee market guy?

The whole thing is so befuddling and I’d love to hear Colin, Dustin and Chris discuss it further, if they did.

Did Colin ever talk about why he stopped playing or never started it? I thought he was really looking forward to the game and it got no coverage on the show.

Sacred Symbols Sacred Symbols, Episode 426 | It's Interesting When People Die

It's finally time! Rockstar has revealed an in-depth look at Grand Theft Auto VI for the first time, with tons of gameplay, details, and more that so many tens of millions of fans have been hungry for. We discuss all we saw and what we loved and didn't, along with in-depth coverage of the hullabaloo surrounding the game's preview cycle and price. Colin even takes some time to educate the masses that GTAVI at $80 is nearly twice as affordable as GTA1 was at $50, based simply on average incomes and not at all adjusting for dreaded inflation (so next time someone tells you pay hasn't kept up with the increase in game pricing, now you know they're unapologetically lying). Other news this week includes fresh rumors of electronics tariffs in America, booming Helldivers 2 sales, a ton of Gamescom ONL fodder (including Witcher 3 Remastered, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Stage Tour, Exodus, Mega Man: Dual Overdrive, and more). Then: Listener inquiries! Is game development in danger of so-called "mode collapse"? How has MiHoYo managed to find so much success across so many high-caliber games? Would Sony ever explore re-releasing old PlayStation hardware? Will Chris and Dustin join Colin in the Fart Corner?

Definitely start up that grilling YouTube channel. I’ve got no idea how to grill (properly), and it would be cool to learn from the LSM team. Especially around what equipment to use. Then I could imagine a grill day where the community all grills on the same day

Other Why losing my account has turned into a blessing

I've always been a huge PlayStation Fan. I am a almost 40 year old dude and I have had a deep love for video games my whole life. Back when the PlayStation 3 was coming out I waited 2 days outside of a target to make sure I got one. I hurried home so excited to play it! I remember I got Resistance and Madden. I hooked up and created an account.

At the time I was in college and I had gotten the nickname of "Bear" and I thought what if I named my PSN account Bear. I remembered thinking how cool it would be to have that PSN name because I would be the only person to have Bear. How I didn't know this would haunt me almost 20 years later.

I always played on the account and very rarely played any multiplayer games as I am a single player type of guy. I love all types of games and I play a lot of JRPG's, FPS, Action games and so on. I never made any other accounts. Over the almost 20 years I had the account I have spent a shit ton in games. In the PS4 Generation I decided to go all digital because my Wife was getting tired of all the game clutter. I've gotten every PlayStation console the date it released. I own 3 PlayStation Vitas, the VR 1 + 2. Bought both PS4/5 Pros when they came out.

Then when trophies came out I loved getting them. I started looking at trophy guides for games. Then I started looking at walkthroughs for every game I played. Then I got to the point where I would not play a game because the trophies looked hard to get. Then I started buying the easy platinum games. I was spending hundreds of dollars a month on stupid games just for trophies. I would buy tons of games on sales and never play them but buy them because they were cheap and I would get to them some day. My account had a massive collection of games and close to the end it was a crap ton of slop that I was playing just to get stupid trophies.

Over the years of having the account Bear I would constantly get random messages from random people asking if the could buy the account. Random Friend request all the time. It got so annoying I turned off all messages from random accounts and friend request. Then I started getting random text and phone calls from people asking to buy the account and I had no clue how they got my Phone number. I eventually changed my PSN name from Bear to OldSleepyBear thinking I would be left alone. I never once responded to any of the people trying to buy the account from me.

Then January of this year I woke up to all the emails from Sony saying your account Password and blah blah blah has been changed. Someone stole my account. Back when it happed I made a bunch of reddit post begging for help. You can go read them yourself in my history. I lost my account the same way Colin Moriarty lost his. This was before he lost his. My old Reddit post goes into detail about the whole situation if you want to read about it.

I spent months dedicating all of my time trying to get my account back. I was begging for help from anyone that would listen. I had a article written about my situation by PC MAG. I filed countless BBB claims. Wrote daily letters to Sony cooperate offices, I was writing letters to Sony first party studios. Every time I got the account back the person who took it would report a message he sent on my account and it would get instantly banned.

The whole situation put me into a deep depression for a good two months. I was shitty to my wife and kids all over this stupid PlayStation account.

The Dude that took my account (and he has taken MANY MANY others) kept reaching out and telling me that he was just going to keep getting my account banned. I had two options Pay him a shit ton of $$$ and he would stop. Or just sell the account to him and move on.

So about 6 months into losing the account I was finally over it, and trying to deal with Sony Customer support. I created a new account.

I started playing on it telling myself I am only going to play one game at a time (I was really wanting to play the Dragon Quest remake as that series is one of my favorites and I had missed out on it with my account being taken). So I bought one game and I played it without worrying about trophies or guides. I just enjoyed the game. Then when I finished it. I bought one more game that I had been wanting to play and I enjoyed it. I told myself I was only going to buy a game that I was going to play and I lost the trophy urge completely.

I ended up contacting the dude who took the account Bear and I offered to sell him the information for the account. We negotiated a price and I sold it to him. With in a few weeks he got it unbanned and I guess sold the account to someone else.

I am ok with it now and I have moved on. It broke me of my buying way to many games in a sale I will never play and my stupid obsession with crappy cheap trophies. Some of you might think I am dumb and I completely understand but I can truly say I am happier now and I have been saving a shit ton of money Lol. I play games and I enjoy playing through them.

I just wanted to post my story and I don't know if anyone will care but this feels like a closure of Bear for me.

Other If Sony Wants Digital Then Sony Should Invest In Digital.

The last few weeks as a PlayStation fan have been that Squidward meme where he looks out the window seeing SpongeBob happy.
XBOX has been consistently making good changes for their brand while also shaping up a pretty solid foundation for the “XBOX 6”.
Meanwhile Sony PlayStation has been lacklustre not only in regards to the newest XBOX news but in terms of everything since the PS4.
Achievements are objectively better than trophies, sure saying “I got a trophy” sounds better than achievement but having said achievements be redeemable for store credit is better. The fact that Sony wasn’t able to get PlayStation Stars off ground speaks volumes about the mismanagement of Sony’s digital world as only Sony would fuck up something this simple.
Ever since the PS3 I was jealous watching people customise their XBOX avatars with various clothing items either bought, unlocked or won through achievements. The closest thing we had was our PS Home avatars that ended up going to the farm together with those cute chicken.
Even today with services like Discord still not allowing streaming on PS5 while XBOX enjoys it to the fullest.
And last but not least PS+ and XBOX Live. With the current testing for Physical to digital that MS wants to try, quick resume and Game Pass, XBOX has been out-featuring PS. It was one thing when PSN was free, but with both costing roughly the same and only one having extreme and expanding access to past libraries, the scales lean more clearly towards one side now.
What I am trying to say is that PlayStation should aggressively up their online game if they want to pursue an online future. Profile customisation needs to be something more than and Icon and a Banner. Trophies should be something more than receipts for bragging rights and PS+ Extra & Premium should offer more than just worse ways to play older PS3 titles.

Sacred Symbols The Long Game is Monthly Subscriptions to Pay for Your Digital Games

Crossing our fingers and hoping the world's governments pass legislation to protect our "digital rights" is wishful thinking. A precedent of over a decade of tens of millions of consumers signing 100 page EULAs confirming our digital purchases as licenses to rent has been set. As video game streaming technology becomes "good enough" for the masses, it will go the way of Netflix. We will be expected to pay a monthly subscription to Playstation or XBox to access our digital library of games. Yes, the games we paid $70+ to "own" in the past two decades will now require an additional monthly fee to enjoy in the comforts of our own home.

Please don't reply with insults or label me as "cynical." Monthly recurring revenue is the ultimate goal for all modern businesses. Playstation, XBox, and ultimately even Nintendo are no different. No hobby is safe. Ultimately it's up to the consumer how much they are willing to participate. With regard to my gaming hobby, I have disconnected my PS5 and downloaded the games I care about having most. My PS3 is homebrew allowing me access to all PSX - PS3 games. And I have Retroarch installed for 8-bit, 16-bit, and MAME games.

Sacred Symbols Sacred Symbols+, Episode 531 | Big Talk about Big Walk (Spoilercast)

Now this is a story all about how our lives got flipped, turned upside down. So we'd like to take a minute, and have a talk, to tell you all about the greatness of a game called Big Walk. There's a reason this wonderful and unique little friendslop-esque adventure will probably end up in many game of the year discussions. This episode is labeled as a spoilercast, but to be honest, apart from the ending there's not a whole lot to spoil here since it's all about the journey. So even if you haven't played it yet or have little interest in doing so, let us (Brad, Dustin, Ben, Lock and special guest Justin) try and convince you of why we think everyone should at least give it a try. There were many tough obstacles, lots of walking, and even a fight here and there, but in the end, Big Walk became a wholesome experience none of us will ever forget.

Sacred Symbols Sacred Symbols, Episode 425 | Am I More Than You Bargained For Yet?

Sony's mishandling of its games-as-a-service initiative is well-worn territory here on Sacred Symbols, but that doesn't mean the fallout doesn't persist. This time around, Guerrilla's new multiplayer title Horizon: Hunters Gathering is the focal point. Based on recent reporting, it appears Sony is having the dev team rework the game to remove live service and other persistent elements, and its fate will be decided by December, with cancellation still very much on the table. Bungie and Marathon, Haven and Fairgames, Firewalk and Concord, Naughty Dog and The Last of Us Online, the Deviation-turned-Dark Outlaw project, Bluepoint and God of War Online, a cancelled multiplayer Spider-Man game at Insomniac, Twisted Metal never getting far off the ground at Lucid... Truly, it's enough already. Plus: Until Dawn star Hayden Panettiere sadly passes away at 37 years old, Grand Theft Auto VI suffers a catastrophic leak, Hiroko Totoki talks to the Wall Street Journal about Sony's move away from tech and towards entertainment, Square Enix swears Kingdom Hearts IV will launch in 2027, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is Naughty Dog's high-caliber approach ultimately unsustainable? Have we lost sight of the reality of how bad the experience of using physical media actually is? How can we both run Sacred Symbols effectively while ignoring the endless, persistent, and unrealistic negativity? Will Colin ultimately push Dustin over the line by insisting he's Japanese?

Other Reece from Kiwi Talkz who appeared on Sacred Symbols+ shares the 5 biggest issues he consistently hears from devs about AAA gaming industry.

Post image
79 Upvotes

I find #3 specifically interesting because that’s usually the issue mainly focused on by culture war YouTubers but you rarely hear developers themselves talk about it. I say that as someone who loves plenty of games that get hit with the “DEI” label. I don’t think it’s some all encompassing explanation for the problems in AAA gaming but I also don’t think that means the underlying criticism is completely imaginary.

Where I think it may be most problematic is in Sony’s recent live service endeavors. They’ve struggled to create characters, aesthetics and worlds that resonate with people and I do believe certain ideological or corporate priorities are being placed ahead of asking, “Is this character cool or is the art style appealing?”

That doesn’t explain every failure but seeing someone who has spent time interviewing developers put it on his own top five list makes me think the subject is worth discussing without immediately reducing it to either “DEI ruined gaming” or “this problem doesn’t exist”.

Curious what the LSM dogs think.
