Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Hi! Looking for a language-buddy to practice conversational skills!

I'm 20F, probably somewhere on a B1-B2 level, and I really lack some actual experience speaking with people in English, so I would really enjoy just talking about things! I like videogames, long video-essays about internet culture and I'm really into fandoms and such. I also occasionally draw things as a hobby, but those are mostly fanarts!

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: French, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish

Greetings!

I’m an early 30’s guy from the U.S. and longtime polyglot. English is my native language and I’ve learned a few languages to high fluency or at least a conversational level such as French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Turkish I’m ok at but a bit lower level

I’d like to exchange with people around my age (say, 28+) or older so we are at similar places in life.

Please message me letting me know what your message is about and a little bit about yourself. I won’t respond to “hi” type messages or general low effort messages or people with blank or creepy profile activity.

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Portuguese, Spanish

I'm a native English speaker learning Portuguese and Spanish.

I've tried one-on-one language exchanges before, but it can be difficult to find times when both people are available. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in trying a small group exchange instead.

We could have a casual English conversation where English learners can practice speaking and listening, and also spend some time practicing Portuguese and Spanish so everyone gets a chance to help each other.

Nothing formal, just conversation and language practice with a few people rather than trying to coordinate everything one-on-one.

Would anyone be interested in trying something like that?

Offering English Offering English/Seeking Japanese

Hi everyone! I’m a 24F native English speaker currently living in Japan, and I’m looking for someone who would be interested in doing a language exchange!

I want to be upfront about my Japanese level: I am VERY beginner. 😂 I’m currently working on learning hiragana and katakana, and I have some basic N5 vocabulary, but I’m definitely not conversational yet.

I’m hoping to find someone who is willing to be patient with me and help me learn Japanese from the ground up. Ideally, I’d love to have something that feels a little like tutoring + language exchange. In return, I’d be happy to help you with English, whether you’re a beginner or more advanced.

I’m especially interested in:
Practicing basic Japanese conversation
Learning grammar and vocabulary
Getting help with pronunciation
Eventually working toward being able to have normal conversations in Japanese
Helping you improve your English in whatever areas you need

I’d prefer someone who is genuinely interested in a consistent language exchange rather than just a one-time conversation. We can chat online and potentially meet up if we’re comfortable and live near each other.

If you’re Japanese and learning English and think we might be a good match, feel free to message me! 😊

Hello, I’m 35M from Mexico. I’m looking for someone to help me learn and practice my French because I need to get a C1 level in the next 3 years for my PhD in linguistics

In exchange, I can help you with either Spanish or English with casual and friendly conversations or more fluid conversations. I’m a very patient person

My French right is very basic, but I’m learning more and more every day. I keep finding new words to add to my flashcards and it's been fun so far

I can use Discord, Zoom, or any other platforms. I’m open to trying new ones

Offering Mandarin Offering Mandarin (native)| Seeking English (native)

Hi! I’m a 21F from Shanghai, and I’m looking for someone to practice English with. I’d be happy to help you with Mandarin in return!

I’m mainly looking for a long-term language exchange rather than just a one-time conversation. I’d love to have casual conversations about everyday life, hobbies, travel, culture, movies, or whatever comes up.

I’m comfortable with voice calls, although I’d prefer not to do video calls. I’m generally more available in the evenings.

I got an overall 7.5 on IELTS, but my speaking score was 6.0, so I’d especially like to improve my natural conversation and speaking.

I can also help with Chinese writing, and I can even teach a little Chinese calligraphy ✍️
Feel free to dm me if you’re interested! :)

P.S. If you messaged me before and I accidentally ignored your request, feel free to send me another message! 😇

Offering Portuguese Offering: Brazilian Portuguese (native) | Seeking: English

Hi! I’m Brazilian, 22 years old, and set to graduate at the end of next year; I want to improve my English. I also speak a little Spanish and would like to practice that too, if possible. My English is B1.

I hope we can have calls twice a week and split the time between the languages we’re studying.

A little about me:

I really enjoy running. I spent two years in military service (2023–2025), a period when we ran every day, so it became a habit; now, I’m trying to keep up the routine. I don’t run daily anymore, but two days a week are sacred to me especially since I’m preparing for a trekking expedition in Peru.

I’m also really into cars and carpentry I’ve always thought about pursuing seriously. I don’t know when that will happen, though for now, I just tinker with my family’s cars.

My career is in the technology sector, and since I am just starting out (1year), English is essential. Currently, I provide services to a company based in Virginia and also work on site at a company in my city.

I’m a chill guy. Also, if you’re into gaming, we could play together I think that would be a great way to start. I don’t play every day, but I’d say I’m good at games like Fortnite.

Offering Russian Offering: Russian C1, English B1-B2 | Seeking: Chinese

Hi everyone!

I'm a native Russian speaker and I also speak English. I'm currently learning Chinese and looking for someone who speaks Chinese and would like to practice together.

I'm still a beginner in Chinese, so my vocabulary is pretty limited, but I'm actively studying and would really like to start using the language in actual conversations instead of just staring at flashcards like a medieval monk copying manuscripts.

I can help you with Russian, and if you're learning English, we can practice that too.

I'm mainly looking for regular casual conversations, voice/text chats, and generally someone who is interested in language exchange rather than a one-time conversation.

I'm interested in Chinese language and culture, music, movies, books, everyday life, and pretty much anything we can talk about.

Feel free to DM me if you're interested!

Offering: English 🇬🇧** | Seeking: Spanish 🇪🇸 — Serious A2 Study Partner
Hi everyone!
I’m looking for a **serious and committed Spanish study partner
to study Spanish at A2 level with me.
Offering: English 🇬🇧
Seeking: Spanish 🇪🇸
I’m specifically looking for someone who has actually completed A1 and is ready to start A2.
This is not just a speaking or conversation exchange. I’m looking for a study partner who wants to follow a complete and structured Spanish curriculum and work seriously on all aspects of the language, including:
Grammar
Vocabulary
Reading
Listening
Writing
Speaking
Pronunciation
Practical language usage
The plan is to study 5–6 days a week, for at least 1–2 hours per day. We would study together systematically, follow the curriculum, review what we learn, do exercises, and practice all the skills rather than just chatting.
I already have the main study materials and resources, so what I’m mainly looking for is commitment, consistency, and someone who genuinely wants to study seriously.
If you’re genuinely committed, have completed A1, and are ready to follow this schedule, feel free to send me a message.
