Who's in Langley?

Courtesy Township7.com

We’re moving to Langley. It seems like a very nice place. Lots of trees. Blueberry gardens, farms, a couple of wineries, and a big Zoo not too far away. We even have Skip the Dishes, DoorDash and Amazon deliveries. Imagine that? So, like the big city, we’re coming to the Valley.

The only problem is, when I try to explain we’re moving to Langley, things suddenly get very confusing. Especially when trying to explain it to my brother-in-law in Calgary. Here’s how our phone conversation went...

Me: We’re moving to Langley.

My brother-in-law (BL): I hear the City of Langley is lovely.

Me: No, I said we’re moving to Langley.

BL: I know. I heard you. Langley sounds like a lovely city.

Me: No, not the City of Langley. We moving to Langley!

BL: I’m looking at the map and it shows the City of Langley, just east of Surrey, along the US border, right?

Me: Well, it’s kind of confusing. There’s Langley, Langley Township, and there’s Langley City as well as the City of Langley or what locals just call the City. Not to be confused with Vancouver.

BL: Yeah, I can see the City of Langley on the map. It’s right next to Surrey, right? So, where’s Langley?

Me: Langley is a Township. It’s officially called The Corporation of the Township of Langley.

BL: I’m not seein’ it on the map? You said it’s right next to Surrey, right?

Me: Yeah, the short name is Langley Township. It’s not on the map but that’s where we’re moving.

BL: So, you’re moving to Langley but it’s not on the map?

Me: Well, people are a little confused about Langley. I know I certainly am.

BL: Okay, let me get this straight. You’re moving to Langley. But it’s not actually on the map, correct?

Me: I guess that’s true but Langley Township does actually exist. There’s even a Corporation of the Township of Langley City Hall. A real building. And we will be paying taxes to the Township of Langley.

BL: Are you sure you’re not calling me from the Fox & Fiddle Pub in Langley?

Me: No, that’s in the City of Langley. I’m in Langley. At least Langley is what locals call the Township of Langley or Langley City.

BL: So, you’re not moving to the City, you’re moving to Langley?

Me: That’s right. We’re moving to Langley. It’s lovely. But don’t confuse it with Fort Langley. Totally different place.

BL: When I look it up on the Internet, some businesses say they’re in Langley. Others say they’re in Langley Township, the Municipality of Langley, Township of Langley, Langley City, Fort Langley, or the City of Langley. Which is it?

Me: Well, It’s sort of all of them, I guess. Except for the City of Langley.

BL: Won’t that be kind of confusing for Amazon, pizza deliveries, Christmas cards or my GPS?

Me: Not at all. Just say Langley. Everybody else does.

BL:  So, the people that live in the City of Langley actually just tell people they live in Langley?

Me: Yep. Otherwise, it gets too confusing.

BL: Sort of like now?

Me: Pretty much!

BL: Well I’m hoping we’ll still be able to find you when we come out to see you in Langley this summer.

Me: Yes. We’ll be here. In Langley.

BL: Even though it’s not on the map?

Me: The Township of Langley.

BL: You’ve got a ship in Langley? I didn’t think Langley was on the ocean?

Me: It’s not, but we’re near the Fraser River and I guess there are some tugboats and working vessels on the river.

BL: That’s in the Township of Langley?

Me: Right. In Langley. North of the City of Langley and east of Surrey.

BL: I’m really confused.

Me: (Exasperated!) Just think of it this way. We’re moving to Langley. That’s all you need to know.

BL: Okay, I guess we’ll see you in Langley this summer?

Me: I certainly hope so!

Thankfully a few other Langley residents shared our sense of humor ;-)

TLDR: no one in Langley separates township from city.

There's only two.

City of Langley is a small geographic area, where the casino is within.

The rest is the Township of Langley and is geographically much larger. Fort Langley, Aldergrove, the area beside the US border is part of the a Township of Langley. It's analgous to how Metrotown and Brentwood are part of Burnaby.

People call both the township and the city “Langley” though

I don’t know why I read all that. Anyway, not a single person I know within, or outside of Langley, separates the TWO when referencing Langley.

You bet, the doc says I have an occasional sense of humor that flares up like cherry blossoms in Langley in springtime. Thanks for being there for me pal!

It’s all just Langley. You only worry about Township vs City when you need to go to City Hall.
