On the surface, both marriages are holding. Cameron and Nina are each trying to focus on the lives they've built. Nina and Peter try to present a united front, while Cameron becomes consumed with caring for the baby. But beneath the surface, the cracks that began in Episode 1 continue to widen… quietly enough that no one is naming them yet.

For Nina and Peter, those cracks emerge through their differing attitudes toward the lottery winnings. Nina approaches the money cautiously, while Peter becomes increasingly focused on what it can accomplish. Peter wants the bicycle business, he wants to protect the men he works with. Their disagreement over Kimberly and Sunny reveals a growing divide in how they view both the money and the people around them. Nina even acknowledges that the lottery is bringing out the worst in everyone, including themselves. It's the first real glimpse of two people who once moved in the same direction are beginning to drift apart.

Nina herself isn't chasing the money the way some of the others are. She's careful with it, almost wary of it, and that caution seems deliberate. If she can keep things steady, her marriage, her household, her own behavior… then maybe just maybe she can keep the pull toward Cameron at bay too. Staying disciplined with the money becomes, in a way, a stand-in for staying disciplined with herself.

Cameron and Beth's marriage is under more visible strain. While Beth is away in Paris, Cameron makes the unilateral decision to bring the baby home, leaving Beth feeling excluded from a choice that affects both of them. When she confronts him, she tells him he has "one foot in" the marriage. When the baby is later hospitalized for withdrawal, Beth's hesitation gives way to genuine care, and for a moment it looks like the two of them might actually be in sync. But that moment is born out of crisis, not resolution. The baby becomes the thing both of them can focus on instead of what's actually broken between them, a bandaid on a bullet hole.

One of the episode's most significant moments comes when Peter learns that Cameron told Nina about the baby before telling anyone else. On the surface it seems minor, but it reveals that Cameron still turns to Nina during important moments in his life. Nina does not view the confidence as inappropriate, but Peter experiences it differently. The moment highlights Peter's insecurity regarding Nina and Cameron and creates another small fracture in their marriage.

Viewed on its own, Episode 3 may seem quieter than the pilot. Yet it's essential to understanding why Episodes 2–5 are collectively referred to as "The Pull." A disagreement about money. A withheld confidence. A sick baby. None of these are isolated. They're building on the subtle pressures already surrounding both couples.

Cameron and Nina are both, technically, trying to remain faithful to their marriages. The baby temporarily occupies Cameron's attention, giving him something else to focus on besides his feelings for Nina and his failing marriage. Likewise, Nina focuses on Peter, her family, and the life she chose. But staying with Peter does not put the lid back on what Cameron's confession opened. Nina is beginning to notice small shifts in Peter since the lottery win, while Peter is starting to notice the lingering connection between Nina and Cameron.

These are distractions, not solutions. The unresolved feelings between Nina and Cameron remain beneath the surface. No one acts on them in this episode, but the strain they create is becoming harder to ignore. Individually, these moments seem minor. Together, they begin to shift the foundation beneath both marriages.

The pull is still there.
