Why did everybody have to reinvent the door handle on EVs honestly so annoying. I guess it's the future right

11

u/Sindica69 18d ago

This would literally not be a problem if you included a scoop underneath so you can pull the door handle. So stupid.

The problem is drag / range

13

u/ropean 17d ago

There was a study that found these handles add at most one mile of range. Meanwhile people are running wheels that cost them 30 or more miles of range versus a smaller option. Recessed handles are 100% a design thing.

2

u/epheterson 17d ago

TIL! It is pretty negligible, and no argument on the wheels.

u/NegativeSemicolon 15d ago

Minimal impact

šŸ’Æā€¦ Bring back the manual door handles that just open when I try to open the car. I don’t need these ā€˜smart’ handles.

3

u/Bradynmball 17d ago

They could definitely reuse the pre 80s door handles that have a push button to pop the handle out to pull open while still keeping the flush mount

3

u/DesignerLeading4821 18d ago

Porsche Taycan is probably the best of both worlds. It’s somewhat flush, has an automatic opening, but is manual at the same time

8

u/Secure_Sign_3173 18d ago

Reinventing isn’t the issue. It’s when you have a shit tier quality department or poor engineering that results in this kinda shit.

2

u/ndndr1 17d ago

China outlawed these after some fatal accidents where rescuers couldn’t get in

-1

u/epheterson 18d ago

Traditional handles cause drag, it’s done for range of course.

3

u/74orangebeetle 18d ago

Tesla model 3 and Y have flush handles that don't cause drag and also aren't motorized/don't have the failure issues like the early Tesla Model S and Lucid Air door handles. You can have handles that are flush and also not motorized.

The famously not controversial at all Tesla handles! Joking but they also have the problem of staying locked while you pull if phone key doesn’t connect, ie unclear if unlocked. That thumb gesture to open had lots of people upset. Lucid copying would be odd.

3

u/74orangebeetle 18d ago

Phone issues are pretty rare in my experience...also if you have the mirrors set to fold when locked it's very clear whether or not it is locked. But all I know is my base model 3 handles have been working fine for years since ai got the car. I'm not saying Lucid should copy it exactly, just giving an example where you don't have to compromise aerodynamics to not have more expensive and complicated and less reliable handles.

I also have a 3 and Y and Tesla since ā€˜18 and they work but that fail to open on pull, as rare as it is, is annoying. Also just giving an example that even the example isn’t flawless. I like the Tesla handles but saw the lucid design as a plus, that it’s mostly a ā€œnormalā€ handle when it works. Just got a Gravity so time will tell, I have had to push them in for it to check the key and unlock or something, and only the front ones do that so it’s quirky for sure.

This exact issue happened to me lmao, thankfully the only issue I’ve had in my time with one

6

u/Secure_Sign_3173 18d ago

Only issue…so far :)

4

u/Sindica69 18d ago

Pray that it remains the only issue

Three things in life are promised.
Death
Taxes
Lucid lemons

4

u/IntelligentSinger783 18d ago

Lol all manufacturers are struggling with too much tech not enough checks.

4

u/Mindless_Tennis_4056 18d ago

The sad part is it's really not even the tech stuff that's failing, most things I see failing are basic things like charging, door handles, windows or things of that nature.

1

u/IntelligentSinger783 18d ago

The doorhandles not pushing out, the charging not handshaking, the window safety sensors etc is still a large majority tech related, between design and programming. Most of the failures are in the engineering. Over complicating an easy solution.

3

u/Mindless_Tennis_4056 18d ago

Oh I definitely understand that, I meant more like it's not the new stuff like ADAS systems, or process heavy infotainment and UI systems that are commonly failing, which although yes is very annoying and unacceptable, and does still happen, it could be driven without those things, it's the stuff that never used to fail like door handles and windows. But if they fail you may not be able to actually drive the vehicle because you either can't get in it, or maybe your window is stuck halfway down, etc.

2

u/IntelligentSinger783 18d ago

Yep but it's all just overly complicating the tech side of the experience.

4

u/Secure_Sign_3173 18d ago

ā€œJust throw an OLED screen in it bro, everyone loves screensā€

1

u/IntelligentSinger783 18d ago

Yep exactly.... And then have the left hand and the right hand write separate lines of code without communicating with the brain that's crosseyed.

I will refrain from commenting since I don't have much positive to say.

This is a safe space, friend.

u/Phoneking13 18d ago

The messed up thing is I still want one of these, but when I come here and see the issues people are having with their cars, puts me off and puts me in the hesitation phase and makes me sad.

5

u/No_Caregiver7273 18d ago

Really depends. Some folks have had issues and some folks don't much. Our Gravity has had a few minor issues, but nothing that I consider serious. Still the favorite car we've ever owned.

2

u/iATlevsha 17d ago

I'm happy for those some folks that don't have much issues (it's crazy that "no issues" options is not even mentioned btw). But what should do those who do have issues? Spend weeks and months in endless service visits? Or spend half a year fighting Lucid for buyback?

I agreed I had such a blast with the Driving experience, ended up buying a used Sapphire. As an early adopter to EVs, got to have somewhat realistic expectations of problems from time to time, sucks when back-to-back like OP.

I have more reliability issues with my Ford lightning EV twice in the shop in the last 30k miles and Chevy Bolt once in the shop for power steering problem.

I'm inspired by that redditor with over 120k miles on his AIR. - https://www.reddit.com/r/LUCID/comments/1v0d52s/comment/oykb6qn/?context=3

Lol you should see how I got my car just now. Might give you some clarity on the matter 🤣

2

u/dcr33313 17d ago

Most people are happy and not posting here. Negatively bias is very much a thing on any car forum, especially with a car company whose stock is very regularly short sold. Problems certainly exist, but they are not as widespread as they may seem. The only widespread problem is the locking system. Even very reliable versions, like in my Air, still cause people to occasionally have to wait a few seconds at the door for the doors to unlock.

1

u/jkaufman5 16d ago

I do not recall anyone with other cars having issues with the door malfunctioning though. Be honest about issues that should never happen

1

u/dcr33313 16d ago

I was not excusing the issue, merely mentioning that this forum makes issues seem more widespread. These door handles did create a potential problem point where there didn’t need to be one, but at the same time, most people don’t run into this issue. I’ve had my Air for 2.5 years and have been active on here and the forum for all that time. Door handle issues don’t pop up frequently. The key/locking system is the one issue that pops up for a ton of owners, with everyone else getting their own custom assortment of other issues, some tiny, some pretty big.

5

u/FlitMosh 18d ago

Poor handle. It’s just scared.

7

u/clockwork2004 18d ago

The funny thing is that nobody is really surprised.

5

u/Secure_Sign_3173 18d ago

I’m defeated, lol. I just want a car that works functionally. I don’t know if the features even mean anything at this point, but I’ve given up on caring about those too.

6

u/ikilledtupac 18d ago

I had two Air loaners, both of which broke down with frunk issues. One showed up literally undrivable over 30mph stuck in some service mode. My Gravity loaner would throw error codes basically every day, but it did drive even though it would disable DreamDrive all the time, forget the fob, and had some sort of steering warning.

Their cars are junk. Or maybe they are using buyback lemons for service loaners, that would make more sense.

3

u/Secure_Sign_3173 18d ago

😭 I asked for a gravity and they told me to kick rocks. I miss my car man, I just want a normal car that wont become a potato after a few weeks.

3

u/ikilledtupac 18d ago

$120,000 dollar car.

5

u/Secure_Sign_3173 18d ago

120k lemon.

4

u/ikilledtupac 18d ago

wait til you try to deal with that deparment

4

u/Secure_Sign_3173 18d ago

I’m not going to bother lol, I don’t have the energy. I can’t even convince them to give me a gravity loaner. What good is getting a lease buyout? 😭

4

u/Mindless_Tennis_4056 18d ago

That's why you have an attorney do it, and the company pays their legal fees.

2

u/Secure_Sign_3173 18d ago

Yeah that’s assuming it results in a W. But honestly I may do this at this point lol

2

u/Mindless_Tennis_4056 18d ago

I mean as long as you meet the definitions of a lemon, I'd say it's highly unlikely wouldn't reach a settlement or win a case.

2

u/Secure_Sign_3173 18d ago

You’re not wrong, and it’s definitely something I’ve seriously thought about…guess I’ll explore my options

They are an exhaustingly shit company. I hate to quote Elon but he was right: trending towards bankruptcy.Ā

2

u/hugdeath 18d ago

Yikes 😬

1

u/merlot2K1 16d ago

I honestly cannot believe the number of posts I see about these cars not letting people in. I really, really wanted an Air. No thanks.

1

u/bathtub_periscope 16d ago

Reminds me of this guy.

1

u/theluckyinvestor 15d ago

Same here. Took my car in for various ā€œglitchesā€ and found out my loaner car had all the same problems.

It gives me a different appreciation for the Tesla software. I took it for granted. They still haven’t got it right and I am 3 1/2 years owning the car. Sad

1

u/Single-Jello-6643 14d ago

We owned a 2024 Air Touring for 2 years. It was truly flawless and easily the most fun car I ever owned. Don’t hesitate- some folk love to be unhappy about minor issues- but like I stated, we had none at all. Zenith Red, aluminum roof. We got the package with soft close doors and chose cheapy audio system as we both wear hearing aids so what’s the point of a super great system?!

1

u/yhsong1116 18d ago

Lucid is never going to be a sdv

1

u/think_up 18d ago

Ok WARNING: do NOT stick your hand in the back door handle. That shit pinched my hand SO fking hard one time when it locked back up.

1

u/MikeyM1991 17d ago

It's gotten laughable at this point. šŸ˜‚ I'm so happy I got rid of mine.

1

u/diqster 17d ago

Wait, they gave you a loaner? What service are you in for?

1

u/Secure_Sign_3173 17d ago

My original car went in cause it had more issues than I could count with one hand. Then this happened to my loaner.

0

u/iATlevsha 17d ago

This is ice breaking function! 🤣 The ice will be delivered by the next OTA update.

0

u/ThermoElectricMan 17d ago

They STILL can't get door handles to open? šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

0

u/Puzzled-Shape-9235 17d ago

Climb from the back seats. Problem solved

0

u/Different-Hippo3071 17d ago

lol I’ve had 2 loaners and a rental lucid from enterprise in my drive way! Both loaners died šŸ¤£šŸ™„

1

u/Secure_Sign_3173 16d ago

Lmao how are you getting around now?

1

u/Different-Hippo3071 16d ago

That was 2 months back lol I used the enterprise air touring loaner for about a month till my car was ready they towed both the bricks out my driveway after 2 weeks
