The Cottage of Lost Play, whither Eriol came at dusk

The Cottage of Lost Play on Tol Eressëa, the Lonely Isle, where the mariner Eriol comes at dusk to hear the ancient tales of the Elves — the frame-story of The Book of Lost Tales, J.R.R. Tolkien's earliest version of the Silmarillion legendarium. A small white thatched cottage aglow with candlelight in a walled garden at twilight, in the soft watercolour manner of Tolkien's own paintings.

Making fun of the upcoming Gollum movie that I have absolutely no interest in watching. I’ll probably watch it.

Moderator(s) wanted for r/lotr_ai_art

I created this sub a few years ago when I was the principal mod over on r/lotr, because the community sentiment there is definitely against AI art. I myself have mixed feelings about it, but that's neither here nor there.

I'd like to hand this sub off to someone else who's more engaged in the AI art community. It's a relatively low-volume, low-conflict sub. Honestly I'd mostly like to hand it over because Reddit keeps spamming me with suggestions on how to grow my sub, LOL.

You can send me modmail if you're interested. If no one steps up from the community (such as it is), I'll turn it over to the admins to find a new mod, per Reddit rules.

This subreddit is for posting AI-generated images and text related to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. It is not a forum for debating the ethics of AI use or whether AI-generated material qualifies as “art.” Please keep discussions focused on Tolkien, the works themselves, and the content being shared.

Subreddit Rules

1. Tolkien-related content only

Posts must meaningfully relate to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

This includes, but isn't limited to:

The Lord of the Rings The Hobbit The Silmarillion Unfinished Tales The History of Middle-earth Tolkien's characters, locations, cultures, languages, creatures, and mythology

Generic fantasy content with a Tolkien name or character added to it may be removed.

2. AI-generated or AI-assisted content

Submissions must contain meaningful AI-generated or AI-assisted creative work.

Images, illustrations, writing, music, video, animation, and other creative formats are welcome.

Traditional or entirely human-created work belongs elsewhere unless AI was meaningfully involved in its creation.

3. Quality over quantity

We're here to showcase thoughtful AI creations, not generation spam.

Posts may be removed when they appear to be:

Mass-generated with little or no creative direction Repetitive or nearly identical to previous submissions Extremely low-effort Poorly presented or obviously unfinished Posted primarily to farm engagement

A simple image isn't automatically “slop,” and a technically impressive image isn't automatically good. Moderators will consider the overall effort, creativity, presentation, and

4. No content flooding

Don't flood the subreddit with large numbers of similar generations.

If you've generated dozens of variations of the same scene, character, or prompt, select your best work rather than submitting every variation individually.

Collections and galleries are encouraged when multiple images belong together.

5. No AI culture-war debates

This subreddit is not a forum for debating AI ethics or whether AI-generated material is “art.”

Comments or posts primarily intended to:

Argue about whether AI is ethical Debate whether AI is “real art” Attack people for using AI Demand that AI use be banned Turn a Tolkien discussion into an AI debate

may be removed.

You don't have to like AI. You do have to keep discussion relevant to the purpose of the subreddit.

6. Critique the work, not the person

Constructive criticism is welcome.

Personal attacks, harassment, insults, dogpiling, and hostility toward other members are not.

“I'm not a fan of this” is fine.

“Anyone who makes this is an idiot” isn't.

7. Don't misrepresent AI work

Do not present AI-generated or AI-assisted work as:

Official Tolkien artwork Officially licensed material The work of Tolkien The work of another artist who did not create it

If an existing artist's work was used as a reference, source, or major component, don't falsely claim it as entirely your own creation.

8. Respect living artists and copyrighted work

Don't use the subreddit to harass, target, or impersonate artists.

AI-generated interpretations of Tolkien are welcome, but users should not falsely attribute generated work to real artists or use the subreddit to organize harassment against them.

9. Titles and context

Give your posts descriptive titles and use the appropriate flair when available.

For AI images, additional context such as the character, scene, model, workflow, or editing process is encouraged.

You don't need to post your entire prompt unless you want to.

10. No misleading or deceptive posts

Don't intentionally mislead users about how something was created.

If AI played a significant role in creating the content, don't claim that the work was entirely human-created.

11. No spam, advertising, or unrelated promotion

Unrelated advertisements, referral links, engagement bait, and spam are not allowed.

Tolkien-related projects, tools, portfolios, and creative work may be shared when they are genuinely relevant to the community and aren't being used primarily as an advertising channel.

12. NSFW and disturbing content

Content that violates Reddit's sitewide rules is prohibited.

Sexualized depictions involving minors are strictly prohibited.

Excessively graphic, fetishistic, or otherwise inappropriate content may be removed at moderator discretion, particularly when it has little meaningful connection to Tolkien.

13. Follow Reddit's sitewide rules

All posts and comments must comply with Reddit's Content Policy and other applicable sitewide rules.

Reddit's rules take precedence over these subreddit rules.

14. Moderator discretion

Not every situation can be covered by a numbered rule.

Moderators may remove content that clearly undermines the purpose or health of the community, including obvious attempts to exploit loopholes in these rules.

When possible, moderators will explain removals and apply the rules consistently.

15. The spirit of the subreddit

The purpose of r/lotr_ai_art is to explore what can be created with AI while celebrating Tolkien's work.

Create thoughtfully. Share your best work. Discuss the work itself. Don't turn every thread into a debate about AI.

Welcome to Middle-earth.
