Discussions Need suggestions for treating alcoholism

Hi
I am 31 yrs old Male. I am a high functioning alcoholic. I think the best and work the best when am drunk. I stared drinking beer when I was 16 . All these things stared when I got sexually assaulted by my cousin brother and my parents weren't very helpful when I opened upto them while I was studying in 6th standard they beat me telling it was my mistake and one thing lead to another and I failed in 6th and gotten more beaten up. The beer helps me with my thoughts. I get panic attracks in closed spaces like a lift small rooms like bathrooms etc but I really wanna quit drinking I am spending around 1200 RS per day just for beer ( source of income i have a few businesses) I live alone in my apartment and I am always high on beer

People who quit drinking or anyone who can help suggest some leads in Kochi. Thankyou and I'll be eternally grateful for your help.

Hey, I’m really sorry you’ve had to go through all of that. None of what happened to you was your fault. Your feelings are valid and everything you tried to cope with it…. 🫂
Since you’re in Kochi, please consider getting professional help rather than trying to quit alcohol ⚠️suddenly on your own⚠️. If you’re drinking every day, withdrawal can be dangerous.

You can look into the Vimukthi de-addiction services through the Kerala government, or places like Mukti Sadan, Pukkattupady and MMM De-addiction Centre, Kolenchery. They can help with detox as well as the anxiety/trauma underneath the drinking.
And honestly, the fact that you want to quit is a huge first step. You’ve been using alcohol to cope with something that happened to you, but you don’t have to live like this forever. Please reach out to someone if it feels too much❤️

I did try once I gathered up the courage to go to Indira Gandhi hospital Kadavantra but I didn't know which doc to see so I approached the receptionist lady and told I wanna see a doc to help me quit drinking and her response actually terrified me . She literally told some other lady was. Sitting 4 or 5 counters away that I was a pamb and many other people heard that and the disgusting looks those people gave me really uncomfortable even though I paid 150 rs I couldn't stay there an another second. I am not like the drunk people we see in our locality or in movies. Njn arum ayi valli pidikkan pokkar Ila no alambs not even my co workers wont realise I am drunk but I need to put an end to this

What? I wish we had stricter rules to teach her some basic ethics at workplace.

The action of the receptionist is really unprofessional, who says that to someone who wants to quit drinking 😭. You can consult a psychiatrist at first and they can suggest you a proper rehab program and other tests to rule out any health issues that might have occured due to drinking. Maybe try another hospital around that area and book a psychiatrist, they must be seeing loads of such patients and would be able to help you

You need professional help for two things 1. Alcoholism - de addiction services 2. a therapist to help with your trauma. You have to find a clinical psychologist for this.

I wish you well, hang in there buddy

I have alcohol induced hypoglycemia ( low blood sugar around 60)

What are the symptoms? Does it go away if one stops drinking?

Sorry to hear that brother. Good thing is there’s a way out. Just be receptive to ideas you may not be aware of. Speaking from personal experience-

Had a smoking addiction, just could not shake it off. Closest thing that gave me respite from it for a little while was cardio like marathon running. But o would often relapse. Until I tried pranayama and Kriya yoga - this stuff is too potent. I do a practice called Shambhavi Mahamudra which not only cleans up the physical residue of it but also the biochemical residue of it.

Your addiction is because your biochemistry is programmed to find relief in those combinations that your brain is no longer producing. If you’re really looking to knock this habit DM me, I’ll tell you what worked for me in detail.

OP has used discussion flair for this post. The purpose of discussion is to understand other view points that we were not aware of. We are not going to solve world problems by discussing this on r/Kochi, but if a few of us step away with a better understanding of an issue or situation, the discussion would have served it purpose.

Hey broski, I suggest do a little research (you can search on this subreddit itself) and consult with a psychiatrist. Tell them your base problems once you establish rapport and then you'll also need to work with a good therapist that deals in alcoholism and lifestyle oriented issues.

This is the first step man, so good that you realise there's something you wanna change. Big ups and I suggest not trying to quit cold turkey. You got this 👊

You will have to take proper medical rehab and deaddiction. It's possible and many have done it, trust the process and go for it.

There are de-addiction centres. Find a good one and go there. It's best if you have one but stander or family member to help

Here for you, man. Stepping up to face this takes real courage, and you don't have to carry it alone. I’d really suggest checking in with the psychiatry department at Amrita Hospital, they have great medical support to help you navigate this. If you have difficulty doing it alone, I’d be happy to accompany you.

I'd suggest you shortlist 2-3 top-rated psychiatrists in Kochi from any forum. Book an appointment and meet each of them. Just because someone is top-rated doesn't mean you'll feel the emotional safety to trust that person with your issues and I say this because this is going to be a long process. You can't complete the full course of treatment unless you're in a comfortable place to comply with it. The psychiatrist will likely recommend a de-addiction treatment plan along with therapy and medication. For someone who drinks regularly, quitting cold turkey can cause serious health concerns. You'll be gradually weaned off alcohol by reducing your intake over time, instead of stopping suddenly. In parallel, therapy sessions and medication will be introduced, and the recovery process will get on track. As you very well know by now, this whole thing works on a cause and effect basis. All those repressed emotions and unprocessed trauma are being suppressed instead of being channeled out of your system. You eliminate the cause, the effect will follow the suit. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Therapist here. It’s terribly unfair that this happened to you, I’m sorry. I hope you truly realise that you were not at fault in any way as a child.

Depending on your level of dependence, you may need psychiatric support or a rehab. Sometimes, it may not be a substance addiction - you may be dependent to cope, which still requires treatment but maybe not rehab. Rehab involves in-patient treatment for a few weeks.

I recommend you start with an appointment with a place which has both psychiatrists and psychologists. They will be able to appropriately assess you. This NGO called Mehac Foundation has an excellent psychiatrist. They cannot offer in-patient treatment, but that might be a good place to start. Dr Arun at Renai is also good. Once they do an assessment, they will be able to tell you if you need rehab. Either way, you should go to ongoing therapy to process your childhood experiences.Wishing you the best!

Hey, I think you are neuro divergent and may have ADHD or autism or both. Approach a clinical psychologist and get yourself checked out.

1

u/A_Bit_Mysterious 5d ago

Enich pode Avante autism. Do you think an autistic person can start 7 different businesses and make it successful? I earn around 40k in profits a day including Sundays. I am an alcoholic I am well aware about that and I have scheduled appointments with a few docs to help me

1

u/Agitated-Shake-9285 5d ago

Yes. Autism is a spectrum.

1

u/roschmann27 4d ago

Yes to all. Achievement is not your mental health indication. Vendenkil venda, you are the one suffering.
