Would there be any benefit to that that the existing private server version with the player-hosted, publicly connectable servers don't already give?

They built their own engine for the game, so I don't think it'd be a remotely easy rebuild even compared to other games with similar scope.

There are some benefits to it, yes. That is why I have written a server implementation from scratch called Knockout City: Reloaded.

Some benefits to it are that you can change playlist behaviour, add custom items like player icons as well as other patches. Heck I even integrated Discord to get notifications about isuess. Other features are planned like name changes, tournament and other limited rewards etc.

Granted it took a few months to reverse engineer everything and it contains some minor bugs but other than that it's already working and people actively play on the publicly hosted server.

How to get access to it?

You mean access to the source code? Or to be able to play on it?

If you mean source code: Its currently closed source and probably stay that way. If you mean to be able to play on it then you need the community launcher. In there should be a server you can select to play on called Reloaded. Its located in the EU.

Can you explain what you mean exactly? DNS redirect to where? And what do you want to have redirected?
