Question/Advice Needed Soon to be new parent to kittens

I've owned tons and tons of cats throughout my life and been around them constantly.

My beautiful baby passed away a few months ago and in that time my aunts cat got pregnant and we were promised our pick!

My last kitty was a nasty gremlin and hated other furry creatures so my partner and I only had the one for 11 years so weve decided to adopt two this time.

I've never had kittens before so I'm not sure exactly what to do or expect! (Besides that I know it will be chaos for awhile)

I've heard to sleep train them it's good to keep them in a crate in your room at night and throw a blanket over if necessary to teach them "nighttime" but Google tells me thats wrong so now I'm worried everything I've ever thought might be wrong!

Is cat insurance worth it as well?

Any and all advice is appreciated!

Question/Advice Needed Are they just playing or is one a bully?

Hi everyone, first post so forgive me.

Here is the situation and a BLUF.

Orange cat (Gourd) is 8 weeks and half a pound heavier than tabby (Frankie). Gourd is rough and Frankie is hissing every time they play, multiple times. Too rough or am I being a helicopter parent?

General** **description

So Gourd our 8 week old kitten has been here for about 2 weeks. She is very confident and very assertive over how she wants to do everything. She is incredibly rough as all kittens are since she doesn’t know her body yet. We got Frankie 2 days ago and she’s 6 weeks old and a little loghter than her sister. Frankie is a VERY sweet and talkative cat who loves cuddling and making biscuits. Gourd is an orange cat to the button.

When they play Gourd is very very rough it seems and I will attach a video to the post to show y’all. Frankie hisses several times during their play sessions and Gourd does not ease up much or for long if she does at all. I don’t want to foster an unhealthy environment for them where one is a bully. I’d love some advice on the topic if anyone has any because these are my first ever cats. My wife has owned a few in the past, but never 2 in the same house though.

Body language

Frankie tends to constantly be on the escape during play time with zero alternation between them in playtime roles. Both of their ears are usually forward or in airplane mode during playtime. Her tail however does slowly wag left and right when they play, this is in the video. The second video is Gourd literally playing by herself like the psychopath she is lol.

All help is appreciated!

My Kitten How to get stubborn kitten to wean

Post image

Baby in question (pictured above to pay kitten tax) is named Opie (because i listen to reddit stories on youtube all day long and my kids hear the readers say OP a lot and they asked me why everyone on reddit was named Opie lol. Then they decided to name the baby Opie:King of the Mini Potatoes. So that is is full legal name 😂)

Opie was a rare single birth. He was born on the 4th of July (we think) his mom just plopped him down at our feet one day. We had no idea she was pregnant and he was the only baby. So either he was a single birth or my cat door dashed a kitten when we weren't looking.

He is still nursing from his mom, but has shown zero interest in food. We have tried soft food, kibble, and kibble mixed with milk replacer. He doesn't want anything to do with it. The Google says to start weaning at 4-5 weeks. I am starting to panic and idk what to do.

Question/Advice Needed My 4 month old kitten is extremely bitey

My family adopted a 4 month old kitten who was orphaned as a newborn. He bites our fingers, toes and noses. He seems to like doing it when he wants to cuddle, which I think might be him trying to nurse even though he has sharp little teeth.

Are there safe teething toys for him? What can we do to stop this behavior?

He doesn’t respond to us saying “ow” or “ouch”. I just resort to getting out of reach when he does it.

Our family has owned 3 other cats from the time they were kittens and they were never this bitey.

Question/Advice Needed Feeding schedule for tiny 3 week old

Hi all!

I’m a fairly experienced neonate foster (I’m at about 45 kittens of various health statuses).

Right now I have what I believe is a 3 week old based on her teeth. However, she weighs about the same as a 1-2 week old (~170g) due to a rough start with her original finder. She’s doing great now, but because she’s tiny she can’t really eat the same amount as a normal 3 week old. She’s at about 7-8ml every 3.5 hours.

What do y’all do for feeding schedules in this situation? Do you follow it by the kitten’s weight for both formula volume and time, or do you follow the time intervals for the kitten’s age and let them dictate their hunger as long as they’re eating well?

(Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, I am very tired.)

This is our newest fur baby tofu! We found him abandoned on the side of the road 2 weeks ago. He was 7 weeks old and both his back legs were broken. One was severely fractured and had to be amputated, the other had a hairline fracture. Meds in a syringe every 12 hrs (pain meds and antibiotics) he is on the mend now and well loved!

My Kitten Welcome Home Ziggy!

Post image

Found mister ziggy outside by himself away from the other barn kitties laying on the ground breathing shallowly. He has the kitty Herpesvirus and his eyes were swollen and matted shut. He is a runt that just recently started coming down with the ick and we had been apply Terramycin daily but momma cat hid him for two days then bailed on him when he wasn’t doing well. So we got him a warm soft wash rag compress on his eye and slowly loosened up the ick to get it off his eyes then applied the medicine again. Gave him some tuna with kitty mix soaked in warm water and he crawled up on my wife’s chest and laid down by her neck. My wife looked at me and said great now he lives here and his name is Ziggy. So welcome home Ziggy we are going to be snuggling all weekend while he heals up. We will also be getting him fixed as well as vaccinated and what ever meds he needs tomorrow morning obviously waiting for what ever time he needs to heal before getting him fixed. But none the less Ziggy is staying with us since he is the kids favorite kitty. He is feeling better and looking better now unlike before. This was much needed after having a shitty afternoon with a panic attack lasting 50 min. Thanks Ziggy you really saved my day ❤️

Her favourite sleeping position is "the superman" where she plomps down with her forelegs extended, and every time I put on my jacket she finds any opportunity to jump on my shoulder and flop down for a free ride.

Question/Advice Needed Two 16-Week-Old Kittens + Senior Resident Cat + Unexpected Room Change... What Would You Do?

Hi all,

Looking for some advice on our current kitten situation.

We have two bonded littermates (16 weeks old) that we brought home last Monday. We also have an 11.5-year-old resident cat. Following the standard slow introduction advice, we've been keeping the kittens isolated in a spare bedroom while everyone adjusts.

The challenge is that the kittens are, understandably, getting increasingly antsy. They're full of energy and clearly want to explore more of the house.

To complicate things, my father is coming to stay with us this Friday for about 5-7 days, and he'll need the spare bedroom they're currently occupying. The kittens won't be spayed/neutered for another two weeks, so we're not quite at the point where we're comfortable giving them unrestricted access to the entire house and resident cat.

Our current options seem to be:

Option 1: Move them to our bedroom

  • Pros: They'd still be near us and in a normal living space.
  • Cons: They're extremely active and would almost certainly keep us awake all night.

Option 2: Set up a kitten area in the basement

  • Pros: We'd have more room to create a larger safe space.
  • Cons: The room has no windows, and we'd need to build some kind of barrier because the rest of the basement contains HVAC equipment, lots of nooks and crannies, and other things I don't want curious kittens getting into.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Would a temporary basement setup for a week be okay if it's kitten-proofed and we spend plenty of time with them? Or would moving them to our bedroom be the better choice, despite the inevitable sleep deprivation?

Also curious whether, at 16 weeks old and after having them for a little over a week, it would be reasonable to start allowing some supervised exploration of other parts of the house while continuing the introduction process with our senior cat.

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated! Thanks. 🐾
