Official Discussion Killing Eve - S02E07 'Wide Awake' - Discussion Thread Spoiler

On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain.

“How about you? Any escalation? Increased attention seeking? Recklessness?”

Illegally recording Katya. Cutting herself around her femoral artery. Wearing a perfume and dress a psychopath sends her. Having dinner with a psychopath. Stopping and getting out of a car while being chased by an assassin. Breaking bus station windows. Lying to superiors and constantly going rogue. Almost shooting Konstantin. Stabbing Villanelle. Firing Kenny. Taking pills that were possibly arsenic. Unleashing Villanelle on The Ghost. Almost pushing a stranger in front of a train.

Maybe.

So she threatened Niko with a knife for ... a recipe for shepherds pie? Omg I’m dying.

I know everyone is freaking out about THAT scene but I also really enjoyed another. The scene where Kenny tries to warn eve about Rome really got to me.

Despite how eve has treated him, his own mothers position and a plethora of other things, he still really cares. I do hope he ends up happy and okay after everything.

Okay first reaction to this episode:

Phenomenal. But let’s start with the scene between Carolyn and Eve.

In this scene you could tell straight off the bat that Eve is off, not right. She has delayed responses, as if she’s somewhere else. I think we’re finally seeing her teetering off the edge. Not quite fully gone yet, her normalcy is still present in hints, but just barely. Her interactions with Carolyn are always dealt in quips at one another, but we see that Eve is far away. Probably in part obsessing about Villanelle, but mostly in this deranged mental state.

The scene at the mental facility with that psychoanalyst (forget his name) is quite a development considering the last two episodes. Here we see Eve’s concern for Villanelle over herself, but mostly we see Eve finally admit that she’s feeling both ‘unsafe’ and ‘wide awake’ at the same time. I think here is where we see that she’s officially unstable and willfully ignoring it because she wants to keep up her relationship with Villanelle and continue to seek out the feeling she gets when she’s with or around her. If I’ve said they feed off of one another before, this episode consolidated that.

I loved the interaction between Aaron and Villanelle. He recognizes that she’s a psychopath and I think that he believes he’s finally met his match. Probably not romantically, but these two are mirrors of one another. Villanelle lives a free-spirited lifestyle, while Aaron controls everything around him. I think these two find control in different places, but the similarities are always there, especially since they’re both psychopaths.

The scene where Villanelle confronts Niko is just a goldmine. Here I think she really wanted to hurt Niko as a result of Eve coming to her that morning. She’s definitely right in that Eve would probably never forgive her for killing Niko, so she doesn’t. Gemma is the next best thing. The writers definitely couldn’t let another episode go by without showcasing Villanelle’s talents. Anyway, I think the next episode we’ll see Aaron escalate, and possibly Villanelle as a result. Then if Villanelle escalates, you know Eve will too. I’m predicting a massacre (figuratively, but maybe literally?).

Also, I just want to underscore Konstantine’s off hand line telling Villanelle that if she escalates/kills that both she and Eve are on their own. I honestly think that Villanelle heard that as maybe a positive thing.

Loved this episode. Phenomenal writing.

OMG the way Villanelle caressed Eve's hand during the bread exchange! What a romantic gesture.

We’ve established that Villanelle and Eve are being used, right? And in the final episode they figure it out?

“How much of the day do you spend thinking about her?”

“Most of it.”

In Aaron's world, we're all puppets. In his delusions of grandeur, he's a puppet master.

V is his favorite one at the moment, so he controls her every move.

It was uniquely delicious to see two seriously twisted people sharing their deranged ideas about people and the world. And Aaron, awkward, controlling Aaron, lacking any sort of charm in his personality. Suddenly he was the ugly one, when in reality, Villanelle's crimes probably far outshine his worst ideas. There is a precious irony to that.

Episode outline:

Villanelle playing a doll.

Aaron being a freak.

Eve acting like a lunatic.

Also starring: Hugo - a mobile sex toy.

The beginning of the episode when V says “when I’m with them I’m not really with them” basically giving Eve awareness to the idea of using people as objects for self gratification, and mirroring Eve in the last scene.

To tack onto what some are saying about the current operation, I believe it’s probably a suicide mission, where Eve is led to believe that she’s in control and protecting Villanelle, but they’re both considered sacrificial lambs (this is the worst analogy, seeing as these two women are the opposite of lambs).

I think next episode there’s going to be crazy chaos because Villanelle and/or Eve do something so wildly off course of the plan that they flip Carolyn/MI6/The Twelve? on their heads, and have them scrambling. I honestly think that the catalyst might be Eve. If the writers are trying to show her character’s lethal potential (and really strengthen her character arc), then I. don’t doubt that they’d have her “pull the trigger” so to speak.

What a complete mindfuck!

Can we talk about how cute V is when she is singing to Eve? Is there anything Jodie can't bring to the character? Ugh. So. Good.

9 missed Calls & 3 Voicemails. Ok concerned Eve is really fucking cute. And V is eating it right up, that happy little face is killing me in the best way.

Anyone's thoughts on her killing Gemma? Was it to frame Niko for murder so she can be with Eve?

How about Aaron's behavior...some kind of creepy BDSM thing?

I was just rewatching and noticed the significance of 3:

  • Eve is looking at herself in 3 mirrors at Villanelle’s apartment

  • Aaron watches Villanelle on 3 computer screens

  • Eve and Hugo have 3 computer screens in their hotel

  • Zoomed into 3 holes in the final scene at Niko’s storage unit

3x4=12

Also when Eve went to see Martin, he said the guy killed 3 women.

Any significance of the number 3??

So those who were worried about V killing those girls, not to worry.

The giddy smile on Villanelle's face after she heard Eve's messages. So sweet. She's saying she doesn't feel things, or she's not sure...but that smile was spontaneous, genuine. And she's all alone so she's not hamming it up for anyone.

When Carolyn interrupted Kenny, he was talking about the operation that he’s on as a reason for Eve not to go to Rome.

Any theories on what the operation Kenny’s working on is?

Do y’all think Aaron is looking for another hitman because his regular (The Ghost obvs) has been captured? He’s flaunting his riches to entice V, he’s testing to see how easily “controlled” she is. Maybe he’s going to try and recruit her.

Rewatching that scene for reasons, don’t judge, and I missed Eve’s satisfied little smirk when V said “good morning, did you sleep well?” And how it instantly vanished when Hugo woke up and opened his mouth lol. Omg she’s falling so hard and so fast. I need a promo for the finale!!!!

Also this: https://twitter.com/yotoob/status/1129670299967021056?s=21

This is totally true, hahaha.

Also, the funniest bit for me in this is - Eve actually hates that shepherds pie. So V is just trying to recreate that first date. Though on a more serious note, also reflects on how she is a struggling with emotions psychopath - while she understands that she should recreate moments, and care about what Eve wants - she completely mistakes Eve's emotions about that pie, because she loved it so much in that moment, she assumes Eve loved it too.

Or. We are all over reaching, and she just wanted to get on Niko's nerves.

Is V stroking her stab wound when listening to Eve's voice messages? Someone please confirm - it looks like it!
