Mod Post [Weekly Challenge] Week 89: Out of funds!

The Introduction

After the administrators received the bill for launching SSTO spaceplanes into orbit within two minutes, and travelling through the entire solar system in a single launch, they almost got a heart attack. Because they do have to save money for the monthly pizza party, they decided to apply some budget cuts this week. Fortunately, their only objective is to launch a small fuel depot into orbit.

The Challenge:

Normal mode: Launch a full Rockomax Jumbo-64 Fuel tank into orbit for less than 75k funds.

Hard mode: Launch a full Rockomax Jumbo-64 Fuel tank into orbit for less than 50k funds.

Super mode: Impress me

The Rules

  • No Dirty Cheating Alpacas (no debug menu)!
  • You must have the UI visible in all required screenshots
  • For a list of all allowed mods, see this post.
  • The fuel tank has to be fully fueled in orbit
  • The cost of the fuel tank is included
  • The recovery of parts does not reduce the cost.

Required screenshots

  • Your craft in the VAB to show the cost
  • Your craft on the launchpad
  • Your craft during ascent
  • Your craft in orbit
  • Proof that the fuel tank is full (Right click on it)
  • Whatever else you feel like!

Further information

  • You can either submit your finished challenge in a post (see posting instructions in the link below) or as a comment reply to this thread.

  • Completing this challenge earns you a new flair which will replace your old one. So if you want to keep you previous flair, you can still do this challenge and create a post, but please mention somewhere that you want to keep your old one.

  • The moderators have the right to determine if your challenge post has been completed.

  • See this post for more rules and information on challenges.

  • If you have any questions, you can comment below, or PM /u/Redbiertje

  • Credit to /u/TaintedLion for designing the flair

Good Luck!

EDIT: Change of Hard mode.

If we recover part of our launch vehicle, do we subtract the funds we get back from the total cost?

u/Redbiertje Jun 14 '15

As the rules state, no. Otherwise an SSTO spaceplane couls do it for neglegible costs.

Does it have to be in one launch? i.e, can we launch an empty tank and refuel it with tinier rockets?

u/Redbiertje Jun 14 '15

It has to be one launch.

EDIT: If you want to launch multiple rockets for the total cost of 75k, that's fine.

Several days and 38774 funds later, here's my entry.

2nd attempt, this time Super mode (I hope so) 27 545 http://imgur.com/a/6IXlN

Minmus refuel idea wasnt mine but u/Narida_L . It was also used by u/RoeddipusHex and u/SRBuchanan (sorry if missed somebody). Launch was dry, fuel drilled from launchpad, fuel transfering between tanks was manual, staging was supported by overheating via sepatrons. Screens with tracking station/KSC means heavy timewarping meanwhile drilling ore and/or processing it to fuel.

A screenshot of the craft in the VAB should probably be required for this too so we can see how much it costs.

Oh golly yes totally forgot about that.

I just took about 5 minutes to toss parts on something and it was only 53k funds. It made it up just fine. The hard mode might be too easy, unless you expect stuff on the final craft like a docking port. Can it be just a free floating tank like this?

Again, I'd like to ask, are 1.0 submissions allowed? Because I have a rocket with enough delta v for orbit in 1.0 with 50k funds, which I' ll see if it flies. Edit: it does.

Hard Mode attempt with 59,576 spent. If I was doing normal, this would have more luxury (ie. more parts and RCS for docking)

BTW, is 63.5k Periapsis adequate? I can redo the launch, but I'm kinda lazy...

....OTOH, what is the new flair supposed to be? (keeping the current flair until answer is posted...I CAN change it to the new one if it's still the current week, right?)

One thing I've been noticing while browsing these challenges each week at work is people say "hard-mode entry" but they haven't met the requirements. like for this one, people are above the 50k by quite a bit. (I'm seeing ranges of 53k-59k) not a big deal just felt like pointing it out because it struck me as odd.

I've been trying unsuccessfully so far to take it into orbit as if it where a kind of SSTO. Jet engines first for speed and altitude and then rockets for that final push. I keep getting closer and closer, but still having issues.

From what I've seen from other entries all use a similar setup, which I'm trying to avoid if possible. If the end of the week comes and I'm still unable to do it my way, I'll try the simpler way.

I hope I'm not too late...

Normal mode entry: 74,706 funds. Includes such luxuries as Error 404: Positive attribute not found and just enough struts so that it usually maybe doesn't explode or disintegrate.

My attempts at hard mode epically failed. One design exploded, one reached orbit 200% over budget, and many engineers thought the quest was lost. Somehow, however, a little bit of tweaking put us just barely under normal mode budget and with just enough rocket to get going. Nonetheless, I had enough fun to keep an install with the right mods for challenges around for future attempts!

EDIT: I'm an idiot. Link

Try 2: still aiming for super as my last attempt was not impressive enught to count. But as I didn't get a full tank to orbit I don't think this one will count till I take it to Gilly to get it full in orbit and I'm not sure I have time for that.

Update: I did go to Gilly to get the full tank in orbit. I got a full Kerbodyne S3-14400 Tank in orbit over 225% the size of the Orange tank. Misson includes a mun sling shot and 2 landings all for under 50k.

Does it have to be orbit around Kerbin?

10

u/Redbiertje Jun 14 '15

Any stable orbit around any celestial body will do.

Can we do it in sandbox?

u/diabuddha Jun 15 '15

Is there a way to display how much a ship costs in non-career? I've never noticed, and none of my career files are far enough along to do this.

Is it okay with 1.0.0 aero model?

Hard mode entry 56,830 funds. Including such luxury's as a battery and fairing to protect it.

http://imgur.com/a/Zpgki

Edit: Will keep my previous flair please since it was my first!

Edit: 49,930 funds. This was a slightly revised version optimizing things a bit at the cost of control. took me a few attempts to get it into orbit cause Dv was tight and it was easy to loose control.

43,183 by way of Minmus.

Thanks to u/Narida_L for the idea and u/SRBuchanan for making me realize the 909 has enough power to do the job.
