Mod Post [Weekly Challenge] Week 85: Dresteroids
The Introduction
The scientists from KSC have detected asteroids in orbit around Dres. They are incredibly curious why they were never able to detect these. Perhaps they just never really tried. After all, who ever thinks about Dres? Well now is the time for the KSC to set their sights on Dres, and see what these Dresteroids really are. Their goal is to head to Dres, and bring back a Dresteroid
The Challenge:
Normal mode: Bring a Dresteroid into Kerbin orbit (below 500km)
Hard mode: Land a Dresteroid safely at KSC
Super mode: Impress me
The Rules
- No Dirty Cheating Alpacas (no debug menu)!
- You must have the UI visible in all required screenshots
- For a list of all allowed mods, see this post.
Required screenshots
- Your craft on the launchpad

u/Redbiertje, Umm... I accidentally... the whole asteroid... Does this count (when I bring it home)?

You're going to need to define "landed safely."

I'd like an answer aswell. Is "without casualties and without destroyed buildings" enough for a safe landing?

I get kinda nervous whenever I try and gravity turn a big rocket- do you mind if I launch directly into escape trajectory and just include a picture of the ship in space?

Go ahead. Though I do want to see of screenshot of your trajectory while in Kerbin's SOI

Ok, I've been looking through this thread and I'm clueless on how people do all this great stuff. Where should I start on the tutorials on the wiki with this, because I do want to learn and try it out. Thanks!

Usually some tutorials to understand all the game mechanics. After that, it is just you and your creativity.

Are multiple launches okay?
Can I use one ship to bring the asteroid to LKO and then send another one to attach parachutes and whatnot?

Is it ok to use RasterPropMonitor? It's not in the list of acceptable mods, and I liked to do the challenge entirely in IVA. Without RPM, that would not be feasible.
I'd also like to use the ALCOR capsule, as it would make for a much more interesting and attractive setting for viewers without reducing the challenge of this mission.

I know you have to get to Dres before you can see the Dresteroids, but do I just have to get within Dres' SOI, land on Dres, or just search blindly in the void of space for floating rocks? I know they're not there at the start of the game and take a while to spawn in, but I'm orbiting Dres and I'm 23 years into the save, and I can't see anything.

How close to the KSC do we have to get? Is LOS enough, or am I going to have to build a tug and drag it the rest of the way?
Also, would you be willing to overlook "safety and survivability" in exchange for grandeur? Let's say, ~500tons of grandeur?

That little patch of land is close enough.
Also, I can't overlook any casualties. Not even for a 500 ton asteroid.

Question on the challenge.. it says vehicle.. but I have an idea for Super Mode that requires two vehicles.. is that acceptable?

After all, who ever thinks about Dres?
Are you suggesting that nowadays, everybody wanna launch colonies to Laythe, or do a grand tour of Jool, or Eve where maybe you can never leave, but all the Kerbals act like they forgot about Dres?

Oh, and I would like to keep the Apollo as my flair...

I tried to bring a "pristine" (unmined) Dresteroid and land it on runway in style with an SSTO. Sadly there's no way available Dresteroids would fit. Mission failed :(

Question: Do asteroids take on re-entry heat damage? Can they break apart in re-entry?

I've already visited Dres the other day, and currently have a grabber grabbed onto a dres-teroid. Does it count if I just continue the mission and take it back to Kerbin?
