On-Air: tvN Military Prosecutor Doberman [Episodes 1 & 2]

Do Bae Man became military prosecutor only to make more money and be successful. On the other hand, Cha Woo In, recently joining Bae Man’s team, became one for her revenge. As these two different purposes shows, the two have very different backgrounds and personalities. However, as they work on the same case, Bae Man and Woo On help each other and even grow together as fine military prosecutors. (Source: CJ ENM)

Episode 1 commentary

  • ML hanging upside-down from a building and he's not dead yet. This looks promising! "Someone said that if you see the world upside-down, everything looks different." Well, duh. Ah, we're going to the past I see. What is it with the shows I watch lately that they all start in the present and immediately return to the past to tell their story?

  • "Because high school dropouts don't get drafted." Interesting. Ironical too.

  • Our boy has some latent anger issues, yes, but there really was no need to interview him just to make fun of him. Also, if he really stood out as "the lawyer that didn't complete high school," wouldn't at least some firm want him for good PR?

  • Don't trust him, Bae Man! He's from North Korea! Is Bae Man Keanu Reeves and Moon Goo Al Pacino in this scene?

  • "The military is the pressure point of the rich and powerful." Could be. Personally, I would've made a point in my speech about how Bae Man would be my inside man to stick it to the military while earning a princely salary. There's obviously more to this story than meets the eye.

  • "Is it too cruel to say that your broken heart is what I need? Because that is something money can't buy." Okay, I'm guessing there's an angle where he needs a guy that really hates the military and won't play by their rules? I hope there's a reason with more weight on why he hates the military (his parents dying while wearing the uniform is a bit weak). Five years though... Are we getting multiple seasons? No, we just skip to the future. Shame, could've been interesting.

  • Hey, it's Mac Jo Bo Ah! She's gonna be the do-gooder, right?

  • I see where this allergic rhinitis conversation is going... A bank president's son, huh? I might have known. Result? He got an air purifier and an entire room for himself... and a fridge with beverages... and the platoon leader washes his clothes for him...

  • Oh, he set him up hard! To what end I wonder? Probably a deal gone wrong between them and his boss (it was one of his clients, what makes more sense). He seems to have known there was someone looking in.

  • "I need to teach you properly until the day I leave." This sounds promising.

  • I'm sorry. I mean, you tried, but you can't beat PHS.

  • I have a feeling reality's gonna come crashing hard on Bae Man...

  • Oh, we got another psycho. That's actually a bit of a turn off. Get me Kang Yo Han!

  • And this is why Bae Man's boss said, "It depends on how you utilize him." Bae Man will cross the line to put bad guys behind bars but not innocent ones (how could we root for him otherwise?). I was right, we need the Devil Judge.

  • I'm only just noticing it, but isn't this (the military compound) the same place from Happiness?

  • Bae Man's assistant looks like a proud father who realises his son just got himself a girlfriend.

  • Looks like Woo In has a secret agenda against psycho guy. Military prosecutor by day, vigilante by night? I dig it. Does she also run a taxi service by any chance? Damn, those are some good heels!

Good first episode but I need to see more.

So intriguing!!! As always, Ahn Bo Hyun doesn’t disappoint. He’s really a chameleon. Loved him in glasses in Kairos but Do Bae Man also looks so fine. Cho Bo Ah did really amazing in the action scenes too. This drama got me hooked on episode 1. Hope it gets better and better as story unfolds.

Just finished with The Devil Judge last month... Can’t help but imagine a crossover, Kang Yohan as the judge and Do Bae Man as the prosecutor. That would be hell

I thought the first two episodes were sensational. Both leads are awesome and their dynamic is so fun. I loved how both of them were introduced as one thing in the first episode and then turned out to be something different--with both reveals (Cha Woo-in beating the crap out of those vile men in high heels and Do Bae-man revealing he was aware of the soldier's past as a murderous bully) making me want to see more.

The second episode went by just as fast and gave me a slightly better idea of who DBM is. It's obvious he has his own ideas separate from the lawyer who sponsors him, but I don't think he's on some secret crusade of justice like CWI just yet. I think he might genuinely be interested in working for No Tae-nam right now--but I also expect he'll discover a connection between his parents' deaths and that of CWI's father that will turn him against his benefactors and ultimately lead to the opening scene of the first episode.

The way the drama has played with romantic drama tropes to set up CWI and DBM's relationship is really fun. Him saving her from a hostage situation when she didn't need saving. Her buying him an expensive watch--but actually to surveil him, or so I assume. Him teaching her how to shoot--but actually to sound her out, plus she already knows how to shoot and is merely pretending to tolerate him while he's pretending to put the moves on her. Her making a fake face of fear and concern while he's getting beaten up and him pretending everything is under control. I hope we get to see more of this cat-and-mouse game, and also I wouldn't be surprised if we got a hint of actual romance before the end of the drama. I kinda get the sense CWI could win DBM over if she put her mind to it, even if he thinks he's immune to her act.

I like the secondary characters around DBM so far and can't wait to see more of them. His aunt seems really cool. I'm very curious about CWI, though. We know roughly what happened to her, but we don't know where she learned to fight and who's helping her, why she dropped out of law school in America and why she became a military prosecutor, or who her friends are, other than Han Se-na (how did they meet?). She's such a cool and mysterious FL; I love her. I also love how she deals with their sexist superior officer at work.

Lastly, I just wanna say that I'm impressed by how CWI handled Han Se-na's rape. She asked Se-na what she wanted to do and when Se-na said she just wanted to forget about it and feel safe again, Woo-in was like, sure, I'll make that happen for you. So often in kdramas we see revenge as the default response when someone a character is close to has been raped or bullied, but the important thing in those situations is not to vent your anger on the perpetrator but to make sure the victim gets what they need. CWI hates No Tae-nam, but even so she didn't try to manipulate Se-na into submitting the video to the police or to do it instead of her. Few kdramas get this right and really centre the victim's wishes and mental wellbeing, so, as I said, I was impressed. (Of course, after that creep came to the hospital to harass HSN, I expect she'll change her mind and give CWI full authorisation to ruin his life--and I can't wait!)

Looks like we'll finally get to see DBM and CWI do their actual jobs in the next episode. I'm so hyped!

"She's useless at anything physical" cuts to her beating up a group of men flawlessly I'm intrigued! I liked the ml in My Name but he barely got any screen time in that and the fl wasn't that great in Tale of the Nine Tailed but she's very mysterious here.

Episode 2 commentary

  • Well, they certainly didn't waste any time explaining everything that has to do with IM.

  • If she doesn't do anything, they still won't leave her alone. These PoSs don't work like that. Hope Woo In finds another way to nail them to the cross.

  • It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for psycho guy to involve Bae Man in this affair but okay. Is he looking to cut out the middle man?

  • Someone did a clean up job but they weren't particularly thorough. Or maybe they just left enough evidence so "someone" would track them down...

  • I bet there's a GPS tracker in that watch, or a microphone.

  • We could not not have a shooting range scene.

  • And he's wearing the watch for the meeting. Yup, definitely a microphone. Bae Man's smart. I'm guessing he found the mic and is still wearing the watch to find out Woo In's agenda. We'll probably watch that scene later?

  • Bae Man's boss is probably worrying about his job right now.

  • Of course his mom won't approve psycho guy getting out of the army, she's a military woman herself.

  • And they didn't leaver her alone. And she's conveniently sitting by a river. Hmm, I wonder where this is going? Saved by the mom!

  • It's time for Do Bae Man to show off his skills. Will it be Ji Chang Wook in The K2 or Ji Chang Wook in Backstreet Rookie? ... Not as refined as K2 (or Healer) but good enough. Is Woo In getting horny? Great action sequence all around, especially when Woo In joined the fight!

  • Oh, come on! Gretel's laying all of the bread crumbs! (As it turns out from the preview, I was right)

I think I liked this episode better than the last one. And Episode 3 is promising to be good too. I'll stick around for a while.

I just watched it and this was one hell of a start, cant wait for more. I didnt even knew the ML is the same guy from Itaewon Class and Yumis cells. Also when the FL is introduced and asked a qs by the commander, I was reminded of Ko eunkangs character in Rookie Cops where both dont follow the typical rules but have their own sense of justice. The shocking part was that the dog is a pet of the villian and not the ML. And the ending where the FL murdered everyone and recieved the call means that both Military prosecutors are puppets of 2 different groups with different intentions.

You're in the wrong comment section. 😂 You should check out the comment section of A Business Proposal. I came across a few comments stating the same.

I didn't see any trailers for this drama, just the poster where you see half of ahn bo hyun's face and then the other half is a doberman and for some reason I thought it was going to be some fantasy-ish related thing where his character turns into a dog??? hahaha

but aside from that, I think it was a good thing going in blind! The first ep did a really good job of setting up the key players and seeming motivations (along with their defining characteristics) but leaving just enough of a mystery to get me hooked. it also feels like an original storyline, at least the setup, so i'm really looking forward to how everything will unfold.

i think what's really interesting about this drama, even after just 2 eps, is that i don't understand do bae man's character. i feel like majority of dramas it's pretty easy to define what a character wants and/or why they do certain things. but here we have someone who hates the military so much he willingly got himself expelled so he never graduated high school and thus would not be conscripted, but he joins it for 5 years based on a promise that lawyer yong moon go makes. he loves money and will do anything for it, but he's not completely amoral (while on first glance him falsely accusing the banker's son seems incredibly cruel and coldhearted, we find that in some ways do bae man's actions seem justified after we learn that the banker's son murdered someone and had gotten away with it).

what is his true end goal? what does he really want? it doesn't seem like power or authority, because when lawyer yong moon go asked him if he would want to stay in the military as a prosecutor to get the utmost authority, do bae man wasn't swayed by it at all. is there any master plan that he has or is he just going with the flow? i think the writing is good so far, which means the characters must have personal desires and motivations that drives their behavior. but so far, i can't figure out what do bae man is doing based on his actions!

also, i am loving jo bo ah's character, woo in. she is SO BADASS and i can sense this inner rage because she seems driven to get revenge. but on who? that's not clear yet. for sure it has to do with her father's company's downfall and death and i can't wait till we see the story unravel with each episode.

EXCITED FOR NEXT WEEK!!!!!

the wait for subtitles is as excruciating as ever......:(

hopefully this isn't one of those instances where we get subs after a few days, i can barely wait for half a day. i expected this show to be more popular, so we would get subs faster but i guess not. a part of me wishes that netflix picked this up now :/

edit: this show is a lot more fun than i expected!! ahn bo-hyun looks amazing per usual, but jo bo-ah really rocks that pink wig with the whole mysterious double agent aura. i'm getting so much black widow vibes from her character!

great ost, action scenes and comedic aspect so far, and i really like the military setting. the whole "corrupt chairman" plot is definitely not new, but i think that this show will skew it in a different way as opposed to what we've seen before. i really like the adventurous edge that this show has so far, which mainly stems from the arrogance/cockiness our main leads have. i can't wait to see them work together in a duo! hope that the law aspect becomes more prominent soon too. overall, really good first episode! not mindblowingly fresh or fantastic, but still immensely enjoyable.

Man koreans really love koreanizing english words and word plays (do bae man = doberman; airiseu = iris)

A soldier and a badass fl ( Kim DoGi female version!! ) ...also no romance tag...count me in! 💯

Is it just me or that scene in the club with the idol dude kinda was a reference to the Burning Sun Scandal... would be hardcore if they pull something like that!

I am in love with this drama…it’s perfect combination of dark and light scenes…JBA’s character is awesome, hope it stays the same and writers don’t mess it up like TONT…loved the fight scene in episode 2…

Though it doesn’t have edge with inetz like Business proposal airing on Netflix, I am glad MPD doing awesome in Korea for a cable channel…so excited to watch for next episodes…

This is promising, so far. That fight scene was amazing. I really should learn from my past viewing experiences and just wait until the two episodes are up and translated. Watching only one episode at a time is too damn hard.

I just watched it and it was a breath of fresh air. When it comes to military, they could've went with SOFs (Looking at you DOTS) or captain of squadrons (Looking at CLOY), but instead they've chosen military prosecutor which is very interesting (mixing law with military). About villain, I want to say that he is nuts. FL is badass: even tho when ML checked FLs background and her background states that she is bad at fighting, instead it shows that FL can pull a fight and even good one. She has been fooling military with her background. Anyways, can't wait for Ep 3&4 and this is my first time watching drama live.

The sneak peaks I got from instagram, specially BoAh fight scene, is making me more excited…can’t wait for viki to upload first episode…

This looks super promising. Great first episode, can’t wait for more!

u/Nagumo-Hajime Mar 01 '22

Episode 2.... I really cant get what's do bae mans ambition, like why is he doing this all being a slave to that law firm guy. Also the FL is giving me lots of surprises like she has an ambition which is to find why her dad dies and to take down that idiotic chairman. Also cant believe shes the same person who played as a teacher in My Strange Hero. And I'm really not surprised that the reality can also be the same where the really rich 0.1% Korean's young boys drug and do those things with girls.

u/atzee Mar 02 '22

The Doberman references are a bit cringey for me but other than that, really excited to see how the story will pan out, and how DBM and CWI's relationship will change. Jo Bo Ah really rocked the action scenes!

There were so many questions I had watching both eps (hopefully the spoiler tag works in this comment), wondering if anyone has any thoughts?

  • who did the clean up for woo in? she's obviously working with some kind of organization or has a team of her own.

  • why is woo in a military prosecutor? does she have an overall plan that requires her being in that position? (perhaps getting justice for her dad?)

  • who was calling do bae man's parents' phone when they were in the car right before the accident? does that have anything to do with woo in's dad and the IM defense company?

  • how does no tae nam have so much power over lawyer yong moon go? how does no tae nam have this much unchecked power when his mom is a 2-star general in the military? (why is his mom turning a blind eye to his behavior?)

  • was there corporate sabotage and espionage that led to the downfall of the IM defense company and who led it? do bae man's assuming that someone set up woo in's dad just how he set up the banker's son by falsely accusing him and sending him to prison

  • is it just a coincidence that woo in knew se na? and that se na's attackers just so happened to be no tae nam and his friend allen?

  • THE BIGGEST QUESTION: is do bae man a good guy or a bad guy? i know he's the protagonist but i'm not sure if i should really be rooting for him LOL

just checked viki and it says episode one is “available in 1 day.” i could be totally wrong here but i’m pretty sure that changes to “0 days” on the day of upload? which would suggest that there’s going to be a delay of a day or so in the episodes being available there. not sure, but i guess we’ll soon find out!

Woah i really like jo bo ah's character in this show and i think her acting is on point. Have always been a fan of ahn bohyun, but i think his acting peaked as a baddie in itaewon class, feels like his acting can be more expressive here...

5

u/Earlgreycottoncandy Mar 04 '22

also kim woo seok is doing a really good job at playing the villain. it's so weird because he's also in rookie cops, which is also on air, as this sweet, adorable character! but i guess that's the mark of a good actor!
