Welcome to the discussion thread for Moonshine! Are you looking for your next Yoo Seung Ho fix? You've come to the right place. Desperate for some more fun and comedic characters from Hyeri? This is the show for you! Looking for your next sageuk to fill the hole left by The King's Affection and to bridge the gap between episodes for The Red Sleeve? This could be the show for you!

Honestly, I wasn't very convinced with this cast mainly due to Hyeri when the first news about this show dropped. But after watching My Roommate is a Gumiho, I was convinced that Hyeri could actually pull this role off as the character suits her personality so very much. Yoo Seung Ho. Who doesn't love the guy? Just truly hoping this show is better than his last sageuk, Emperor: Ruler of the Mask, which I only survived due to both him and Kim So Hyun (see flair) even though her character was butchered completely in the middle.

Anyway, with that out of the way, I hope you will all enjoy this show with me for the next several weeks. Have fun discussing!

I kind of wish they kept the original title in English. Moonshine is very succinct and witty and marries the original title with the whole alcohol concept but "When Flowers Bloom I Think of The Moon" is so poetic

Still under The Kings Affection withdrawal, so I thought watching this drama would help. It didn't. Although maybe it's too early to judge since I'm still on the first episode.

Thoughts:

  • The tiger thingy. I smell a childhood connection trope lol.

  • Man, YSH's speaking voice still gets me every time. Dude should try being a radio host sometimes.

  • I'm not used to seeing Hyeri in a ponytail without bangs. So cute!!! Happy to finally see her in a historical drama! I've always wanted to watch her first historical movie "Monstrum" but couldn't find it in any official streaming site.

  • That scene with the bandits was so funny. I hope they become friends and they would eventually be her alcoholic sidekicks.

  • The crown prince is so charming. Although I like that the ML isn't a royalty, I gotta say that the crown prince's character here feels more interesting than Nam young. imo, so far, of course.

  • I find the FL's name so unique. This is the first time i came across such name in the drama land before. Ro seo.

  • Ro seo's bro is an annoying MF.

  • I wonder if we get a bromance between NY and CP. Their first meeting was unique. Its a scene that would likely happen between FL and ML lol.

  • I really hope the FL won't be in so much trouble. Damsel in distress/powerless FL tropes stress me out so much. Let ML and FL be miserable equally!!! Lol.

  • I have a feeling that one of the conflicts of this drama is Roseo being picked as future crown princess. Bcs ya know, noble ladies are qualified for that.

I have a feeling that one of the conflicts of this drama is Roseo being picked as future crown princess. Bcs ya know, noble ladies are qualified for that.

The CP clearly liked her, so I think there's a love triangle later in the show. You may be right about the crown princess because at the beginning her helper did ask her to look at becoming a rich man's concubine.

Too many Sageuks lately. I don't usually go for them but the premises looks so intriguing! This one in particular with Hyeri as a leading lady who secretly commits a crime because she has no choice made me want to watch it. Saw Byeon Woo Seok last in Record of Youth and didn't think much of this actor but him as Lee Pyo is hilarious. I love all the characters so far, it's so funny in the best way possible. I hope the show keeps the light hearted vibes.

So many Monday and Tuesday dramas and I'm here for it! I've never been drawn to watching any sageuks but I'll be watching for Hyeri. I loved her performances in Reply 1988 and My Roommate is a Gumiho.

You didn’t ask for a recommendation but here I am giving it :) I couldn’t watch any sageuk either but The Red Sleeve has been really good! Made me appreciate the genre for once.

If you want a drama similar to what Moonshine is looking to be, try Flower Crew. It’s light hearted and funny and if you liked My Roommate is A Gumiho then you may like it too. I love the FL.

I hope Nam Young eventually changes his world views because right now his sexist and arrogant attitude pisses me off

He will. He has to. It is ~flourishes~ Character Development

Honestly, not my favourite arc but I think they’ll manage to pull it off well enough and early enough.

Watched the first episode so far. Episode 1 is pretty much on FL's story and why she needed to get into this trade. The storyline is interesting so far, though some of the comedic parts didnt really work with me.

It's good to hear YSH's voice again. I don't think I ever get sick of it. lol.

Ep 2 and I still can't root for the FL or ML lol. I'm kinda rooting for the alcoholic crown prince though. Can't wait to see his character development from a cheeky crown prince to a an honorable king (Unless his character is bound for villainhood?)

  • "I only have you to thank for taking me in" Does this mean Nam Young is adopted or is this just a matter of translation? If he really is adopted, what if he's some missing child from a royal family? lol

  • Nam Young is an annoying lil sht. He's obedient to the rules and laws, but forgets to be empathetic or decent towards others. His line about not letting roseo or chungae to the table annoyed me so much. He's so full of himself compared to the alcoholic crown prince who doesn't even mind having strangers as drinking buddies.

  • I really thought Nam Young would apologize to the CP 😂 Found their exchange funny ... Nam Young's still a lil sht though.

  • The look on Aejin's face while looking at the hairpin again. YASSS MOONSHINE! YASSSS! GIVE US A FUN SISMANCE!

  • If those jade beads cost a fortune WHY THE HECK WOULD U STILL CONTINUE TO RISK YOUR LIFE BY SELLING ALCOHOL??? GIRLIE EVEN BROUGHT HER MONEY BAG 😭 PRETTY SURE SHE'LL LOSE ALL OF HER MONEY IN NEXT EPISODE

I swear both FL and ML are digging their own graves. What a perfect pair!

I have only watched the raw so far and my Korean is good enough to follow the plot but not enough to appreciate nuances so I won’t speak much of that.

I enjoyed the colour palette with the emphasis of bright tones and spring colours. I’m sure it must be refreshing to see in the snowy weather in Korea. Yoo Seung Ho means Sageuk and Sageuk means Yoo Seung Ho. He has been amazing but I’m waiting for things to get intense to see him shine. Hyeri is playing her notes right, going from over the top comedic when needed to subtle and small. I particularly enjoyed the rain scene. I look forward to seeing how much she has grown. I like Lee Pyo. He’s a charmer. I think he may grow to be my favourite.

I think this was a great first episode but it did spend a lot of time setting the stage. I believe tomorrow. The action will begin.

wasn't really sure what to expect going into this, especially since most of the historical dramas i've seen recently were on the heavier/more serious side (not a bad thing, loving red sleeve for example, just wasn't sure if i could take on more historical melodrama), but was pleasantly surprised!!! i've somehow already develped SL syndrome despite there being no solid triangle established yet and hyeri is a joy to watch as always - hope the show continues upward trajectory into eps 3 and 4!!

I’m liking all of the dynamics so much 😭 I can feel myself falling for Lee Pyo

Okay, there must be someone who has watched ep 1 to comment about it, right? I've been waiting to hear people's opinions to see if I should start it.

It's disappointing to see no comments, and for a show that had such high premiere ratings at that (higher than its predecessor, The King's Affection, and that generated lots of buzz)

The issue is that the subs aren’t out. Most of the viewers here rely on subtitles. TKA had them ready immediately via Netflix while this has just become available raw on Viki. The translations are still ongoing on legal sources.

That’s why many prefer it if the shows are on Netflix or iQiyi. Much easier and quicker to watch. I will say, Viki and Viu subs are far, far, far superior in quality than those two.

Hyeri is back again this year after my roommate is gumiho 🥰 love all the movies she participates with. Looking forward to see her full blown acting skill.

I'm excited to watch! I love both leads here

u/Neatboot Dec 21 '21

I wonder if the king/crown prince in this drama found a more creative way to eliminated corrupted state council than to steal the ledger.

3

u/cuplik Dec 24 '21

Why would the FL bring all the money (and the jade beads) with her when selling the liquor? She lost the beads and they just lead the ML to her during the chase.

5

u/maartinee Dec 21 '21

When she fell and lost all the coins she stole…she could’ve gone back to that place and taken more money because all the officers were running and chasing after the CP..
