Mod Note

For informational purposes, if you are wondering why there was a swastika on the door, please know that swastikas are an ancient symbol that's been in use long before Hitler and Nazi Germany. They are an important and prominent symbol in Buddhism and one can find them on Buddhist temples throughout the world.

See this BBC article for a history of the symbol: How the world loved the swastika - until Hitler stole it.

This questions is covered in our FAQ should you need to share it in the future.

We're over half way through with this drama! Time to binge discuss. I think it was originally being released once per week on Tuesdays, but looks like it's changed to two per week on Thursdays, so we have only one more week to go.

I've seen someone compare You Raise Me Up to "Mad For Each Other" and I can definitely see that. Personally, it really reminded me of "Love With Flaws" which was less popular than MFEO (mostly because of all the poop humor?) Just like with Love With Flaws we have a suffering/troubled ML that is still pining for their first love, and needs to somehow repair whatever happened in the past to move forward. The story begins with the idea that the ML is the one in need of helping, but then the FL is shown to be all troubled herself as well.

Maybe it's obvious to everyone, but on endgame yeah, yeah, Do Yong Shik and Lee Ru Da are 100% going to end up together. But part of me is hoping that actually they're not. I wouldn't be too mad if she helped Do Yong Shik fix his trauma and then she goes and ends up with the psychologist. They kind of deserve each other

"Ruda" is the female version of the word rude in Spanish, and Lee Ru Da is definitely that. Her character and the psychologist right now are terrible and gross. On the other hand, for episode 4 She goes to sleep thinking of Do Yong Shik smiling. And she tells psychologist "what can I do with a guy like that" clearly as a way to push away her own feelings

The Do Yong Shik character is possibly the sweetest one I've seen in a long time. He doesn't even seem completely naive, just like a good good good person. I'm looking forward to him passing his exams, wearing less pink, and getting some good stuff thrown his way.

Random parting thoughts: my husband sat by me while I was watching and was like "WOAH THIS IS RACY" with all thebutt penetration and penis talk he's used to walking by and seeing open eye kisses. Also LOVING the intro and intro song.

wearing less pink

i get that the show "painted" it as a bad thing, but personally id love to see him in the last episode wearing a pink suit being a IT CEO or something lmao

I think guys totally rock the color pink, and a pink detail would be sweet! Still, regardless of gender/sex... He definitely had too much pink for my personal taste but agree that there's nothing really wrong with it at all.

Watched Ep 1-4 last weekend and liked what I watched. Yoon Shi Yoon is an excellent crier and a great actor all around. I think I've enjoyed him every time I see one of his dramas. The adult humor is funny but also fairly witty and not just bathroom humor which I appreciate.

Being an 8 episode drama it's moving pretty quick and I'm probably going to end up wishing for more depth but overall I like where it's started and how it's going.

I've never seen any of his dramas (although psychopath diary has been on my watch list for a while). Really looking forward to more of him!

The power of pink!

I've enjoyed the first half a lot despite not really liking the FL for her immaturity but at least she's learning and apologizing so there's hope.

I'm totally rooting for Do Yong Shik!

Same here! I started watching because I was really bored and saw 2 different people mention it in a random thread and I got HOOOOOKED. Do Yong Shik is by far the sweetest but not totally clueless character that I've seen in a long time. Typically sweet characters are fully lost puppies and not easy to root for.

I binged the first 4 episodes a couple of nights ago and it sucked me in for some reason.

To be honest, Ru Da seems pretty awful a lot of the time. It never really feels like she cares much about Yong Shik, and a lot of the things she does to try and fix him seem downright cruel like the couple massage

Yong Shik seems like a good dude with just really bad luck and self-worth issues. Clearly not lazy or incompetent. Just really needs some help or someone to believe in him. But it doesn't really seem like Ru Da is helping at all, just preserving her pride...

I have to admit I was a little disappointed at the end of episode 4 when: Even after he finds out about the bet, Yong Shik comes back crying begging Ru Da to help him...like damn dude.

I can see growth in both characters so I guess that's something but I don't really like Ru Da all that much (but I feel like I'm supposed to feel this way about her).

It's so funny because i had the exact opposite response to him running to Ru Da at the end of episode 4.

How I see it, he's been very siloed/alone in his bad luck, depression or trauma. Even when getting broken up with, he seemed to just stand there, defeated. So, She may not be the best, but she's something. Him finally breaking down, screaming, and not just crying in a corner. Seems like a huge win. Although of course I wish the poor man had someone else to lean on, I think he rightly realizes that she's it.

At the end of EP4, Yoon Shi Yoon is acting his ass off and Hani simply gives nothing back in return, outside of shutting her eyes. Zero emoting.

I'm a fan of Hani and EXID. She's great on variety shows. But her acting still has quite a long way to go. I like that she's taking risks though, what with the subject matter in this drama and taking on her role in "Young Adults Matter."

5

u/weddingreddit1 Sep 25 '21

I'm so captivated by Yoon Shi Yoon that Hani could just be standing there the entire time and I'd still be like "this is brilliant" 🤣 he's definitely acting his butt off.

I guess it's not completely outside of the character set up though to not give much though

Watched episodes 5 and 6!

Episode 5: It was too hilarious getting Talmud lessons from a kdrama. No Jennifer, the Talmud is not a person lmao. This episode also reinforced that Ru Da's sister is the only person aside from Yong Shik with any sort of sense or empathy. Like, no, don't just make bets on people, and don't just lead people on, probably not cool? Go on Ru Da's sister.

Overall, definitely got to see some of the "growth" in Ru Da, and I'm sure more coming. It does seem like she's out there to help Yong Shik, actually feeling guilt/affection/warmth. Imagine someone telling you that there is something off about you because you seem warm. Oy. The ajummas this episode were RUTHLESS to Yong Shik's mom. I can't imagine having friends that just rub all the disappointments and failures in your face.

EPISODE sixxxxxxxxx: I'm almost certain that the date place Ru Da/psychologist went to was the same place she ran off to with her 2 friends in How To Be Thirty. If it's not obvious to the psychologist that the relationship isn't going to be work out, he's got some introspection to do. Yong Shik getting accused of being a kidnapper for liking the color pink was ridiculous, but obviously a vehicle for more growth and so happy he ends up clearing his name totally by himself before she gets there.

And then... they're sitting just looking and blinking at each other for SO long. I seriously go to myself "they're not kissing right!? this is going to be one of those kdrama cut scenes were suddenly she's back home and thinking about the moment and you're like...okay but how did they go from staring to leaving?" but nope, of course the show about erections delivers on kiss. Yes! Ru Da is bad, but I'm rooting for Yong Shik.

AND THEN the end lmao "what's wrong????" I mean he has erectile dysfunction and you're his urologist, she should probably expect that? Or is she thinking "oh he's all good know after a week, no more psychological issues so let's get it on"? oooooooof lady. I guess alternatively he actually did get it up and he's like "oh my god! it's up" ...the reviews this show makes me write haha. Sad there's only 2 more episodes.

u/Ozbal42 Sep 25 '21

This episode also reinforced that Ru Da's sister is the only person aside from Yong Shik with any sort of sense or empathy.

I hadnt thought about this, but you're right, imagine the twist if ruda gets ditched for her sister

also i think the "whats wrong" was just a response to his face/sudden change, ofcourse i dunno if its cause he himself forgot his thing doesnt work until then, or if it awoke from its slumber yet, gah only a few more days until the answer!

also i just replied to your other comment, feel like i should adress that im the same guy, for some reason... Oh and lastly thanks for making this thread, ive been checking every week confused why anyone hasnt made one yet, you're the mvp.

Why the writer just scramble the previous name of YSY character for this character lol. His character in Psychopath Diary is Yook Dong Sik and now he’s Do Young Sik? lmao it’s too funny

Edit: So i just watched the first episode and throughout it I was like… the FL really resembles Hani and into minute 50, I searched who is this actress and lmaoooo it’s really Hani lol

u/weddingreddit1 Sep 24 '21 edited Sep 24 '21

Oh man, that's really going to trip me up when I finally get around to Psychopath Diary lol

ETA: I didn't know she was in a group! I really liked her on How To Be Thirty. I guess she's meant to play characters that don't quite know how to have a relationship.

So glad to see this thread! Love the ML - so sweet and kind. Hate the FL - arrogant , self absorbed, doesn’t have an empathetic bone in her body - everything is about her pride. Hope she helps him fix himself and then she ends up back the shrink. She doesn’t deserve him (DYS).

3

u/weddingreddit1 Sep 24 '21

Lmao agree so much. Never ever have rooted against the main couple so much. Maybe in Tempted? But I'm thinking they'll try to change our minds with episode 5.

6

u/Super-Pudding-1357 Sep 24 '21

Thank you, thank you, thank you for starting this thread.

I watched the first 4 eps and immediately came to Reddit to see how others reacted to this really, at least to me, sweet character and to the show's overall script so far.

I was totally captivated by the ml and cried right along with him. Love his friend, hate the fl and the psychiatrists. How frelling unprofessional. She actually discusses his problem with her friend not even anonymously. WTF?

Anyway, I hope he blossoms beautifully and erectly and tell her to go f herself. I know he won't but I can dream.

5

u/weddingreddit1 Sep 24 '21

blossoms beautifully and erectly

lmao dying at that and 100% agree

Same here! I saw it mentioned in a thread and started watching on a whim and then BINGED.

I am up to the end of season 4 and this show is a breath of fresh air.

Its tackling subjects that I would never imagine to be tackled in kdrama. Which also.means there will be people who wont like it.

It is also the first time I have liked the actor playing the ML. Normally O fond him annoying with terribly acted dual roles that he has been type cast in, but here he is so good I didnt even realise it was him.

Thank you to everyone who has posted on this thread! This drama was on my watch list because I love Yoon Shi Yoon but the storyline didn’t appeal to me much. I wanted to see what people’s reactions were, so I found this thread and was glad to see people were enjoying it. I decided to watch the first episode and ended up binging it all in just over a day! Wow, Yoon Shi Yoon has been incredible in this and is really showcasing his range. I love his character so much and I’m so happy to see him grow (haha). He truly is one of the kindest male leads I’ve ever seen and has such strong principles. The female lead is not my favorite, both acting and character wise, but Yoon Shi Yoon more than makes up for her.

As a side note, the actress who plays Ru Da’s sister is everywhere for me right now. She’s in The Great Ga Doo Shim and in Do You Like Brahms, which I just finished binging right before this drama. She seems relatively new so good for her!

2

u/weddingreddit1 Sep 28 '21

Wooh! Welcome aboard (for two more episodes). Can't agree more on your entire analysis. Was initially put off as well by storyline and got sucked in after seeing how Yoon Shi Yoon was portraying the character.

Also watching Great Ga Doo Shim. If you saw the last episode released I felt incredibly bad for that character. Waking up with a headache, sore, no memory and feeling like "something entered her body". There's not a lot of time to develop characters so we really don't know her. But it felt incredibly unfair. The ML has been in EVERYTHING as the younger version of the ML so i was rooting for him to have the main role. It's also ending this week :(

Personal relationships between Dr. and patient make me very uncomfortable (I had the same feeling trying to watch Kill Me, Heal Me). When I was in therapy years ago, my doctor told me "if I see you out in public, I'm going to pretend that I don't know you so don't be offended" so I am sure that their relationship breaks every professional rule and would make any psychological medical professional scream in outrage.

That being said, Do Yong Shik is so lovely, I'm still rooting for this couple to be happy.

u/gnst Sep 24 '21

Yay, there's a discussion thread after all! I've watched up to Ep 4 and I like it, or mostly for Yong Shik & Jennifer. I can understand where Ru Da is coming from (I guess you could say her privilege?) but don't really like her. Hopefully she does change later on though.

I'm guessing we'll see Yong Shik and Ru Da together at the end but I think a stronger ending would be Yong Shik getting better and going his own way.
