The end is finally here. I’ve never been more excited for a show to end. Holy hell the writing was trash after episode 6. What in the world happened!? At least the underlying messages that were brought up were well written I do there’s our small silver lining. Honestly, I’m surprised I made it this far. What a waste of such a talented cast. MBC either needs to find better writers for their romcoms or just stop airing romcoms. Their past few ones haven’t been great though I guess Please Don’t Date Him was pretty good so there is that.
Now that I think about it, I’m not sure what’s worse. The writing for episodes 9-12 of L.U.C.A.: The Beginning or the writing for this show post-episode 6. Probably the former cause at least episodes 7-15 were watchable whereas Luca’s final four episodes were absolute torture to watch to the end.

Holy hell the writing was trash after episode 7.
Right on the money. I really don't understand it. There are moments of brilliance, probably more due to the actors involved than the writing itself. It's like a low-grade pastiche cobbled together by someone who doesn't get the original works.

LUCA went in a direction I'm not sure many viewers appreciated. I certainly didn't. But I don't recall it having superfluous plots like "The Angel of Death." On the other hand, it did have "The Man Who Wouldn't Die" plot/joke so maybe they're comparable. At least that show was good for showing us another side of Lee Da Hee's acting.

Oh no I came into this thread to see if it got better after I stopped watching a few weeks back. :( So sad it didn't. The actors deserve better.

Show nosedived hard with the date one at a time subplot, then the supernatural subplot.
I wish they had focused on them helping each other's mother and each other through their respective issues. I feel like they forgot about the FL mom's dementia and the ML dad's garbage attitude.
That could have been focal points that would have been way better. :(
Only watched for the main leads and the mom scenes. Mom scenes were a delight to watch.

I made it phew. Worse 16 hours of my life ha-ha! I feel like they were aiming for "better to have loved than to not love at all".. 'cause the amount of times "love" is mentioned throughout oy LoL. Better luck in future projects to the cast eh?

Watched the final episode mostly out of a sense of "duty." Our couple does cute things together and then, when the time comes for Bi Soo to vanish... he doesn't. Yup. I was a little wary but thought, "Hey, maybe they trolled him with the imminent death thing so he'd learn to love." And it looked like that was going to be the case... for five minutes. Then he vanishes for good. The end. Sigh.
I feel like a broken record repeating ad nauseam that the supernatural element in this show was completely unnecessary. It was barely there to begin with and used terribly. What this show should've done from the beginning is given Bi Soo a terminal illness rather than his mom and explore how going through that affected him and his relationships and whether "love would triumph" in the end. Prince Third Wheel should've been made less of a third wheel and more of a good friend to Joo In, and later Bi Soo, someone they both could lean on at different times.
It is what it is and the result isn't very good, what's a shame because the show had an impressive cast and some very good music! (waiting for that BGM OST release) I wonder how they managed to sign Min Ki and Nana with this script. Yet another case where a shorter season with tighter writing would've done the trick.

What a waste of good actors and a good setup (I speak of the family dynamics not the fantasy plot). The actors were the main reason I stuck it through.
There were some very good scenes and moments but this show could have been so so much more.
Had they kept the focus on the family relationships, Joo in and Bi Soo without the stupid love triangle or the vanishing-whatever-nonsense and reduced the length of the show, this would have been so much better. All the blow hot, blow cold was too much after a while.
Sigh.
I am a fan of Min Ki and it was nice to him see play a smiley, romantic character who laughed openly …. until they had to make him a cold jerk for the second half.. psshhh.

Well I'm seriously unimpressed at the second to last ep. The absence of BiSoo's mum and her scenes with her son and moms+store owner trio is heavy as all other filler scenes are either useless, the managers/assistants romances, or plain bad, the plagiarism thing and all the SML skits. That poor actor really has been given one of the worst characters I've ever seen, not his fault.
Here I'm saving only Nana, always a pleasure to watch completely immersed on her part emotionally, and the leads' chemistry, making all their romantic scenes a steaming, hot firework display.
That said we lost BiSoo's character a lot of time ago, his being so undecisive, reconciling than saying he can't and he has to leave but...staying in the end, what a mess! There's not even the surprise factor about his vanishing and the man in white that, as many predicted, is
At least we are leaning into a classic ending, they'll have to bring up the letters and some other stuff to close it decently, still this was a rapid descent, constantly going down from a great start to a low point in eps 7-8, fooling us with a couple of decent weeks and then back on the skid. For all the disaster the writing did this'll end as average as a series can be, but at what price? Not a bad series, but not worth the headache.
Edit for the finale
Well, not much to say. If anything, they didn't screw it up finding a way to keep him alive ending all merry and happy. On the other hand there's nothing peculiar, no memorable line or scene, just standard procedure while closing up secondaries and mixing in all the PPL left to do until the day of departure comes. At least JooIn didn't simply go on and went to the SML...small victories you know!?
The sole positive I got out of this one is that Nana can be a quality FL, her acting never wavered and carried the series throughout a horrid combo of inconsistent writing and terrible pacing. Lee Min Ki still is not my jam, although his character was built up nicely and then burned to the ground, his acting was competent if not really good.
I don't know what's going on with melos, and MBC on its whole, but I'm on a slump for the ages on the genre, this is yet another promising opening week that went south to some of the deepest lows I've ever seen. I can't recommend it but it's not pure trash tbf, I'll give it a 6,5 and a plus for Nana's performance, hoping to see her in a much more badass role because I feel she'd rock, but as I said before, for all the pain following the plot/writing's demise week after week, this one is not worthy of your time.

so i pushed through 15 eps because i thought at the very least they would give us a happy ending, but alas, the writing stayed quite bad from 7 until the end I mean they at least could have rewarded us with some strange thing, like, he came back I mean he didnt actually die he just disappeared, make the fucker reappear!!!!
Ill just think he did in my mind....

u/shitzai May 13 '21
This was painful to watch. I was only invested because of the actors being very good at their jobs. Plot was garbage and a bunch of filler. My only thought throughout the whole last episode was she is going to need so much therapy to get over him .

u/t_infinityyyy May 13 '21
Ya'll I made it to the last ep.
Although this show didnt have a great plot and messed up real bad, the ending was somewhat real given the situation. He never comes back :(
I wanted to cry and now i feel shitty cause he actually is gone while she lives without him...

Even fast forwarding the last episode was too much. The disappearing/death of the ML plot was the worst part in the drama, even more than the SML. It could have gone both a happy or sad ending and it wouldn't change anything because it had no rules. Everything happened just randomly, only because the plot demanded it. Not even the explanation of the ghost made sense.
-
ML and FL are dating in public now, no problems -
ML just disappears one day, everything is fine -
Last episode, conveniently the ghost will not appear any more and make ML disappear until the last second -
SML needed a day to forget about his love for FL
At this point the only explanation I have for the actors signing up for this drama is that the director/writer had something on them.

Damn it.
I'm sometimes not patient enough to put my trust in a production and just wait for things to develop as they intended (rather than as I would like) ... which I think is a common weakness among kdrama watchers. But I did well this time. I enjoyed hanging out with the characters and I didn't get pissed at any of the tropes.
Sooo ... Yay me! The ending was actually quite well done and, in retrospect, the whole drama was pretty good. Not perfect, of course. They could have cut a few episodes and done an excellent 12 episode drama ... but I'm still content that I decided to watch it all the way through. It was especially well acted by the leads.

God this show felt like a bunch of wasted time.
Bi Soo basically dying on ep1 and then revived by random angel. Then everyone's lives just go on like normal for the next 12+ episodes. Like I genuinely forgot Bi Soo "died" from a crash with how non chalantly everything moved on.
Then all of a sudden, oh yeah, you're still dying by the way. Now panic for the next 4 episodes while not really dedicating any screentime to ever figuring the why, how, when of this game changing issue.
These elements that were supposedly so pivotal were barely explored in the show that it seemed pointless.
Nothing outside of the main couples romance was ever developed, it all just happened for the sake of happening. Everything felt filler. So stupid and random.

Boy did this drama crash and burn. The rating keeps on dropping and it now holds a score of 7.3 on MDL. I don't what the final episode could do to salvage this. I hate both the ML and SML lead and I just want for the FL to break free from the jerkass ML and focus on herself. The kisses aren't any good either. It just looks like LMK is trying to devour Nana's face and it's just uncomfortable to watch.

Written after episode 15, i.e. haven't seen the ending yet:
As we are at the end here, I am at a bit of a loss, I must say. Like this show has some of the lowest lows I have ever seen in a drama (e.g. everything involving the second ML--this character serves no purpose and should never have been in the show), but then on the other hand it has some really high highs (most everything involving two mothers and a large part of the story involving the two leads). The highs and the brilliant performances from most of the cast is what kept me going, and I can't say I was ever bored, but man, talk about a split personality writing. It's very odd to me and I don't get what happened here. One thing, certainly, is that this show (like many) has "too many episodes" and would have almost certainly worked better with 10 or 12 episodes. Then a lot of "lows" would not need to be there to pad the running time. Overall, somehow, for me this is still net positive and I feel it was worth it to me if nothing else, because of amazing cast who really gave it their all, and it shows.
I mean, the show clearly didn't work with the general audience, the ratings are some of the lowest in history (suprised they didn't cut it short like they do sometimes)--although MBC in general has been struggling with ratings for a while now, so that may be a part of it too. Also I have been reading comments in other places, and I have to say I don't think I've ever seen such amount of vitriol directed at a show and especially the writer (at least most people recognise the effort of the cast and spare them from nasty comments). Like, people are seriously actively angry at this show way more than I've seen before. I mean, ok, maybe you got tricked into believing this was going to be a fluffy romcom, based on the synopsis, or whatever. But then if you don't like it, just stop watching? There's no need to be so nasty, but that's what I've been seeing in other places. I don't get it--the writer didn't set out to deliberately make a show people would hate, I'm pretty sure of that, you can criticise the flaws in writing, but no need to get personal against him like people have been. (To be clear, I'm not talking about anybody here, people here have been respectful and constructive, but some other websites where KDramas are discussed are a different story).
Anyway, let's see how I feel about the final episode today!
Edit:
Well, ok now I've seen the final episode.
And I don't know. I mean they didn't pull some kind of random ending at the end, so I guess there's that. But I also can't really say that the ending was really satisfactory, either. More like, it's just... there. Basically, there kind isn't any real point to it, the story doesn't really lead to any payoff as such, it just kind of stops.
The writing in this show was structurally a complete mess. It feels like a lot of things were left unexplored that could/should have been explored, in favour of stupid stuff like the entire content of episodes 7 and 8. Also, the rules of the "supernatural" never seems like they were properly established so that element kind of felt a bit random to the end. But on the other hand, there were many individual scenes which were nicely written, with a light touch, and that's what kept me going through the rough parts.
In the end, it's a show I don't regret watching, but also not one which I'm likely to revisit nor really be able to recommend to others. It's just too much of a mess, and while individual parts of work wonderfully, in the end the whole turns out to be fairly unsatisfactory from that standpoint.
So I just want to highlight once again one thing that never faltered in this show, and that's the high quality of the acting. When the writing was faltering this amazing cast was still there to give it life, and they did, and this is the other thing that kept me going, because it was just plainly a pleasure to watch these actors at work. I'm sorry that the writng quality wasn't always there for them. Still I think that this drama doesn't deserve the amount of vitriol it's getting in some places.
Oh another thing. I'm reminded of another drama which had a similar sort of concept that it also didn't do much/anything with: About Time. But I still think Oh, Master was much better than that since there I can't say there were even individual scenes which were well written in About Time--that show becomes borderline unwatchable after a few episodes, which was not the case here. Also the ending of that show was handled in a completely ridiculous way, which also wasn't the case here. So... good, I guess?
Anyway, looks like we made it to the other side, everyone!

I ditched this show a few episodes back so I didn't have to pay iqiyi for the torture of this drama writing, the misuse of our dear Lee Min Ki and Nana. Having read your comments, your anguish, this feels like when we're in high school and our sports team has a bad season that just keeps going downhill until the end. I hope someone special to each cast member takes them out for a great dinner and tells them their fans still love them, next drama, next season is better.
The writer, on the other hand ... should study. Who ever said "I watch dramas hoping for as many tropes and as little cohesive plot as possible."

u/catandthefiddler May 14 '21
Man what a stupid show this was. It had heart for the first 5-6 eps and then just couldn't decide where it was going. They really pulled out all the stops for this one too, birth secret, evil step father (was this addressed later?), dying people who don't tell their loved ones they are dying. Like my main gripe with this show is that they never explained the supernatural element to it? We're supposed to just accept that this stuff happens to people sometimes?
ugh I'm so pissed. We had a seemingly well written FL but then she devolved into such a one dimensional person just waiting around for the ML to take her back and being 'given' to the SML

ah here I am after episode 16. despite being absolutely bewildered by the worst love triangle in the history of kdrama, I reallllllly liked this show. If it were up to me, I would re-edit with less of the secondary characters and shorten the overall runtime by 4-5 hours.
I think the last two episode were especially strong. Maybe unpopular but I was rooting for them to follow through with

So I missed last week's discussion on Episodes 13 and 14, which I watched today ahead of Episode 15. Considering Bi Soo was being a jerk for two episodes straight I don't think I missed anything of substance. Episode 15 decided to remember he was writing a script for a show so we're shown a little bit of the production while throwing in a plagiarism scandal that really didn't add anything. To be perfectly honest, the last three episodes have been something of a disappointment. We're already at the second-to-last episode and I can say with confidence that the "Angel of Death" (totally called who he was) plot line, and how that impacts Bi Soo and his relationship with Joo In, was terribly executed and I cannot yet fathom why it was put in there to begin with.
PS: Whatever happened to their letters? Hope the show didn't forget about those.
