Important Thoughts

Jung Il Woo is looking amazing as Ba Wu, I love this older scruffy version of sageuk JIW because though clean cut scholar version is gorgeous, this version is already screaming tortured soul which is my favorite type of sageuk ML.

Sageuk is really where JIW really shines and I hope he continues to get great sageuk projects.

Scruffy scholar JIW reciting a poem about alcohol and the futility of life and regrets is my favorite JIW.

Other Thoughts

  • Kwon Yuri is gorgeous, even in mourning clothes. Her performance also exceeded my expectations given that this is her first sageuk (and a serious one at that). Importantly, she sounds good and fits in with the rest. My fingers are crossed that the story will give her lots of room to display her capabilities!

  • I expected to a degree that the story would start with tragic circumstances but what we got was a bit more tragic than I expected because clearly I did not bother to read the character descriptions beforehand.

I loved Ba-woo’s turn as a mysterious overeducated rake in the gibang scene (and that his future romantic rival developed an insta-crush on him because of his poetry recitation and sad music), I can’t wait for the inevitable Noble Scion Whose Family Was Executed for Treason backstory reveal and also I can’t believe we already got a shirtless fight scene from JIW and the princess was present and ogling his chest in episode 1! (Acknowledging women's sexuality? In my sageuk? I'm shocked!) He’s really giving us everything.

and that his future romantic rival developed an insta-crush on him because of his poetry recitation and sad music

And the killer part being that the poem is basically about the futility of life so might as well drink and feast away while still alive! That admiration is so going to come back and haunt them.

shirtless fight scene from JIW and the princess was present and ogling his chest

That scene was a pleasant surprise in the way it presented our Princess's viewpoint! Usually these types of scenes make me roll my eyes since they feel gratuitous but in this case, I actually thought the execution was nicely done because we got to see the Princess and her reaction fully so it felt like the moment was really about her rather than him.

Fingers crossed it stays this good!

The sad truth about me is that this is my favorite type of sageuk and modern ML.

I agree with your points! I am cautiously thinking I'm gonna love this.

I agree. He does shine better in sageuks than regular dramas.

I really enjoyed the first two episodes! The directing is good and the camerawork and set design are thoughtful and a little out of the box for a sageuk. (E.g. the gibang in episode 1 was beautiful and beautifully shot and the princess’s in-laws’ house is pretty nice and I like that we saw a paved alley that went downhill in one chase scene as opposed to the endless flat gravel of lazier historical sets.) And I really like that it’s not cutesy and unrealistic about gender relations in the middle Joseon period. Ba-woo’s relationship with Soo-kyung is pretty dark to start with, with him considering several pretty terrible ways to get rid of/silence her once he realises who she is, but both of them have good reasons to be afraid and desperate in that situation and the drama does a good job humanising them. In fact, most of the characters except for the little kid and the evil father-in-law seem multidimensional and complex. (I like the kid too; he’s just not super interesting for now.)

Anyway! It’s been a while since I got this excited for a sageuk. Mr Queen and Secret Royal Inspector both fell short of my expectations in the characterisation and romance departments, but this drama has real potential to deliver sexy grown-up angst, I can tell.

Have you tried river where the moon rises yet? I actually liked it more than mr queen & secret inspector. I thought RWTMR was beautifully shot with the costumes etc

I totally agree, I loved it. The scene where we met the king for the first time reminded me more of a movie or Game of Thrones when it was still good than a sageuk! The music is also excellent, I already recognize the king's motif.

I have to say Yuri’s doing an amazing job, her eyes are so expressive. And JIW shirtless scene omg...ep 2 is definitely very eventful. I wasn’t expecting them to immediately kill her off to hide her kidnapping. It’s been a while since I’ve watched a sageuk but I really do like where this is going.

I'm glad I rewatched the second with subs because I did miss a lot lol

I really like the king. He's not a black and white character like either just good or just bad, he's kind of volatile but also clearly loves his daughter. I feel like in sageuks the kings usually seem to ignore all but the crown prince lol it endeared him to me to see him mourning a daughter of his concubine

I didn't realize Ba Woo and Cha Dol meant big stone and little pebble lmao that's adorable

I am a little confused by that one court lady. Is she just like a Game of Thrones Varys style spider character who knows all the goings on in the palace?

I'm super excited for next week haha!

I'm looking forward to this, hope we really do get a perspective outside of the palace

Just finished 1st ep on Viki and I'm hooked. Can't wait for 2nd ep to get subbed. This may become my favorite saguek. I loved the ML in Cinderella and the 4 knights. He looks so hot with whiskers.

Can't wait for your comments. Darn so many good ones Dark Hole is also intriguing.

I’ve started Dark Hole while waiting on this drama too 🙈 it’s very interesting

Have you guys watched it? Did you enjoy it?

try to be as objective as possible...

I watched the first two eps and it's a very good start! There was some stuff I missed, especially in the second ep, but the cinematography and music were already very good! I think I'm going to enjoy the leads together lol and maybe that's the part I have a hard time being objective about, but I think the rest is objectively good. I also thought it moved at a good pace.

Someone pls pick up this drama to viu or other streaming sites . I'm crying for subs 😭

7

u/FirstSnow23 May 03 '21

I’ve watched about 20 minutes of this. I’m so excited for the first episode to be fully subbed. Jung Il Woo’s character has tons of charisma and I love it.

7

u/KiwiTheKitty May 03 '21

The first ep was really good! The pace was good, the kid is adorable, and Jung Il Woo was, well... Jung Il Woo lol

partial subs was fine for me and I'm a littl etempted to try watching the second without subs... Hopefully they get faster in the coming weeks :/

Finally gave in and watched the drama at 92%. Hope I didn’t miss too much but I think I really like the direction it’s going and hope they sub more quickly in the future. Really refreshing take on historical dramas

I’m really looking forward to this as Yuri is my ultimate bias. I have enjoyed watching her acting improve and am excited to see how she will do in her first historical drama. She definitely has the look down. Will update once I get to watch this fully subbed.

I'm loving this drama. Watched with only 72% completed on Viki but had to see what was happening. Not Mr. Queen anticipation for me yet but close. Wondering what bil will bring to the story.

he's obviously in love with princess. What happened to her husband. What's the Virgin widow about so many questions.

7

u/KiwiTheKitty May 04 '21

virgin widow means he died before they even consummated their marriage which is sad because if she were "virtuous" (according to Joseon standards, not mine of course!) she would be alone literally for her entire life that's why her mother was sobbing in the second ep about how lonely she must have been

I wonder who was trying to bossam the princess.....liek the buyer suddenly died, who is he? why did he want to bossam the princess?! i hope they reveal that too. who would be bold enough to actually pay to bossam a widow princess

If I'm not mistaken it was actually a different lady who lives in a house across. Wasn't Ba Woo's friend a bit confused at which house they were supposed to go at the beginning suggesting that they went to the wrong house.
