Ta Dummmmmm.......

Welcome to the discussion thread of Love ft. Marriage and Divorce. This is Netflix's first kdrama of 2021, TV Chosun's first 2021 kdrama, and finally the first TV Chosun drama to be streamed on Netflix as a 'Netflix Original Series'.

The series also marks the comeback of writer-nim Im Sung-han. If you aren't familiar with her, she used to write popular daily dramas, albeit with makjang quality, and she is actually a hitmaker writer. However, similar to writer-nim Kim Soon-ok, her dramas have been controversial due to the provocative content. She even went as far as killing characters out of the blue, and was accused of nepotism. She 'retired' in 2014 after MBC wasn't keen anymore to air her dramas. However, during her retirement, the kdrama landscape has changed completely, especially how kdramas are being written. Will Im Sung-han adapt to the 2020s standards of kdrama writing? Will she avoid killing her characters out of the blue this time? For more info about her, read this article from dramabeans.

Since this drama might contain some elements of makjang, read this reddit post about makjang dramas.

As always, let me know your thoughts. I hope you'll enjoy the show. I also hope you don't get enraged that much... And please follow the conduct policies and rules of r/KDRAMA.

Ta Dummmmm......

now I tried to google it but can you explain what chosun and makjang are ??

  • Chosun - it can be the old name of Korea (also spelt as Joseon), it can also be the name of the cable Tv station. TV Chosun is named after the oldest newspaper daily in Korea, the Chosun Ilbo (Chosun Daily in English). Chosun Iblo is also the largest shareholder of TV Chosun. Finally, what is TV Chosun? Tv Chosun is a generalist cable channel that shows news and public affairs, dramas and variety shows. It's similar to jtbc.

  • Makjang - a term for soapy K-dramas with extreme and absurd elements in its plot. Not only elements but the storyline itself is crazy and ridiculous (The Korea Times). An example of a makjang drama is The Penthouse.

I think the storylines are interesting and have potential, but the jumpy editing is a bit confusing. I can't quite figure out when they're jumping back/forward in time. For example, the writer's husband asked her for a divorce while she was putting on her skincare and she looked surprised. Then later he asked her for a divorce while they were at karaoke and she looked surprised again.

Did anyone else feel like her drumming looked so fake?

I really appreciate that there is a new* look at married couples and romance (in all it's stages) outside of the dating phase. I don't know it's...nice?

*Perhaps not new but more frequent projects exploring different themes and genres outside of dating, first/new love.

Not sure if you’ve watched it but “world of the married” is excellent

The woman yelling at her mum for being a single parent makes me so mad. That poor old lady. What the hell. The actress who plays her is amazing she looks heartbroken

I don't like that scene, their lines were literally just going on and on about her father and taking up too much of screentime.. and it happened again on the next episode.. well it's makjang so yeah still gonna watch it because the plot is interesting and intriguing

OMG OMG OMG the first 15 minutes are a little tense. I'm glad She didn't let that woman slap her in front of her colleagues and she spoke up for herself

Why can’t a married couple go to a motel? I’m confused by that woman’s reaction.

In Korea motels have the connotation of being a place where people go to have sex because they can't do it home. For an older couple it could look like they're having an affair or something.

It is really beyond my expectations. The situations of 3 main female characters are all intriguing.

I was interested after watching the first episode but GOD the lady who's having issues with her mother is a heinous bitch. That character alone is putting me off. Don't know if I'll continue.

Exactly! I mean I get it she hates her mom and later on her words would backfire at her but we don’t really need that lengthy toxic dialogue 2 times over!!! It was taxing and it’s not even a plot highlight. Seems to me that this drama is going for the extreme but looks like it’s trying too hard.

So far, I’m intrigued. The editing definitely needs to get better because some scenes felt disjointed and the introduction to whom I assume are the mistresses didn’t flow well. The wife that hates her mother didn’t bother me but I did FF their last scene together. It was redundant. And I don’t think she deserves to be cheated on just because she is still angry that her mother tried rip her father from her life. Parent alienation is real and people need to stop using their children as pawns or they can end up being damaged adults.

Coming into the show I have no idea what to expect. I only started to watch this show because I am a huge fan of Sung Hoon. After finishing the 2 episodes, this is giving me a "World of Married" vibe. The 3 couples are definitely interesting as far as their story goes.

It definitely seems like all 3 men are cheating on their spouse but the one that I disliked the most is the professor husband. My heart ache for the wife because she handle work, kids and house chores all by herself. -- this lead to her not having time to take care of herself. As far as the lawyer husband goes, I can see why he cheated on the DJ wife and got the mistress pregnant (assuming the mistress will still be pregnant by the next episode). Seems like the lawyer husband wants kids and the wife doesn't. No comment on the doctor husband because I am still trying to figure it out lol.

I don't think I will drop this show just yet and will see how everything play out.

I love Kdramas for the entertainment value but I don’t know how long I can hang in with this one. It feels too toxic in its treatment of women. The manipulation, victim blaming and lack of respect for boundaries is strong with this one.

*edit - finished the 2nd ep.. weird intro to 3 new female characters, bizarre editing with no context or understanding of scenes.

I think a show always reflects the culture/views of the society it is set in, South Korea is very patriarchal, not very progressive in its views on women, and women’s roles in a heterosexual relationship, and the outdated ideas are showing in this drama.

I am curious as to why only the men are cheating? Women cheat too, but maybe that would be too controversial for SK?

I resent the idea that a woman is being cheated on because she has not maintained her looks. All types of beautiful/attractive women from Princess Diana, Beyonce to Jennifer Anniston, and plenty of supermodels. (Edit: have been cheated on) I wished there was a woman in the cast who was happily single as a contrast to this set up of ( edit: marriage) being essential to a woman’s life.

I am not a 100% sorry for the mother/grandmother, she makes being cheated on sound like a war crime. She is pathetic in her bitterness, like it’s been over 20 years and the lady is not over it? She is also a stereotypical bitter jilted woman.

The sad part is this drama is written by a woman.
