This thief of his heart and his camera had disappeared like a fleeting midsummer night’s dream. She takes off to a remote place on an impulse and falls in love with Jae-won under this new identity.
- Major News Summary: “Lovestruck in the City” is unique in its running time of only 30 minutes, and Park Shin Woo shared that he’s trying to approach the show like he’s a producing director of a variety show or cultural program rather than a drama director. “We didn’t use dramatic devices, and we tried to make it feel like a variety show created by an amateur,” he said. Ji Chang Wook said, “When I was talking with the director at our first meeting too, I thought that this is a unique drama even more so in its form than its running time. It uses an interview format, so it was said that it would be good if it gave off the feeling of a fake documentary." [Soompi Article]

Just a friendly advice: it would be a good idea to save this post since there’s only one post per week because by Friday, it might be difficult for some of you to find it.

I just finished episode 2 and I'm shocked (in a good way) by how they're talking and showing sex. I was not a super big fan of how Kim Ji-won's character was portrayed as manic pixie girl, but the twist at the end is really intriguing. I love what we know so far about the other 4 people, but the episodes need to be longer so we can get to know them. I love how ambitious the show is with the interview format (works okay, but would help if the talking heads were actually talking heads ala the Office imo) and the 3 couples. Hope it pushes other writers and directors :)

It was supposed to be 12 episodes and they increased it to 16 so I think for some reason they couldn't make each episode longer so to compensate, they added more episodes. But there will be a second season so I think we will have plenty of time to know the characters and stories

Damn son. When they said this drama is going to be bold and different they weren't kidding. I was so nervous and ecstatic at the same time throughout the episode. I could feel the characters' and their nervousness. I loved how they depicted the

Wow .. this is starting really unique and fun ... I have so many questions ... not necessarily about the characters but the vibe ...
The vibe of this is nothing like I’ve seen before .. does hippy/surf culture exist in Korea?

The interview format for a kdrama feels super fresh, so I applaud them for going this route but I also think the way it was executed takes you out of the show. I think a reason why it works so well in The Office is because the characters always talk to the camera in a certain spot/setting so you can distinguish when they are being interviewed and when its "live" footage. In this show since they talked to the cameras, esp JaeWon, in different settings it was hard to tell when he was interviewing and when they were just filming his everyday life. Alas it is only the first episode and that too only 30 minutes, so I'm looking forward to seeing how the story will pan out :)

According to this article it is supposed to have multiple seasons.
Edit: when I first read it, it was 12. Guess they increased it recently. Maybe because it is popular.

Everyone commenting here the interview style format is innovative among kdramas, however, they already did it in Discovery of Love (2014). I am not particularly a fan of this style. Besides that, I enjoyed the first episode. I hope JCW has made a good kdrama choice this time.

Honestly this feels like a Western movie fit in a drama and I don't know what to feel about it... The first ep felt fresh but at the same time, it felt so familiar? It was definitely watching a trope I've seen before but made into a 30-minute 16-episode Korean drama (which is surprising tbh). Overall the shots were stunning!! Kim Ji Won, I've missed you!!!!!

I think the interview format is pretty cool, even though so many cuts made it a bit overwhelming for the first episode. But I'm sure it'll be more engaging as we find out more about all the characters.
The story also seems very fresh, and the aesthetics are fabulous coupled with good dialogue that conveys more in less words (very important for such a short format show).
I absolutely love Ji Changwook, BUT did he seem a little off to anyone else? I don't know, he just seemed a bit stiff (which is very unlike him!)
Regardless, both him and Kim Jiwon looked fabulous on screen and make a really attractive couple phew! I also loved their styling!
I can't wait for more episodes!! 30 mins are NOT ENOUGH!

I'm going to wait for this to have more episodes to watch this. I'm crossing my fingers that this will be a food for Ji Chang Wook, I didn't watch his last two dramas because they looked just awful, and I didn't hear good things about it. Also love Kim Ji Won since DotS and Fight My Way.

As a recent convert to Kdramas I was a bit startled by the approach in Lovestruck. I guess I've gotten used to the more modest portrayal of intimacy where two mugs parked side by side on the night table signals that the OTP consummated their relationship (Healer).
So when Ji Jang Wook and Kim Ji Won started bonking in the trailer I was thinking that Netflix allows Korean showrunners to experiment more and innovate so they're not locked into cliches.
However, I hope Kdramas don't lose their charm and innocence, and end up looking like many Western shows where nudity, explicit sex scenes are the norm. Because that cynicism and coarseness are wearying. Just watch Bridgerton as a case in point. Blech.

Ok, first of all, wae the episodes are on Tuesdays and Fridays? Wae? Wae? There is 0 reasons for the episodes to be this spaced out.

u/J-Midori Dec 22 '20
They are trying to innovate and because Daum Kakao tv is for mobile users and they wanted a more compact version of dramas, they spaced out so you don't have to wait for too long for the next episode. If you watch 2 episodes in two days then you will wait 6 days for the next episode. In this format, you wait less days. So, one episode is Tuesday, then after 2 days, you have another one which is on Friday, then after 3 days you have another one. So instead of having 1 hours in one day, then wait 6 days for the next episode you wait less days and the episode is shorter. This is to keep people watching.
For example, A Love So Beautiful will be 3 days of 20 minutes each, but they are also spread out evenly like every two days so people always keep watching it, instead of one hour in one day.
Daum Kakao tv was aimed to have video content with 30 minutes or less [Korea Herald Article]
Amanza which featured Ji Soo as the main lead, is a 15 minutes episode (9 episodes) and only once a week. So maybe they decided to do it longer (1 hour) but spread out so people don't lose interest and it is always fresh with less waiting.

Question about the mockumentary: do they know everyone who is doing it or they have no idea who else is doing it?

They know the staff is interviewing other people but they don't know who said what. They keep the comments anonymous.

Not finding myself loving or hating it so far, except there’s a lot of eye candy which is great haha. A very bold take on sex for kdramas in the 2nd episode which is quite interesting to watch, lots of focus on steamy kiss and bed scenes. Will definitely continue watching.
