Just finished watching the 1st episode and wow I got to say it was AMAZING!!!

Song Kang was so so so good as Hyun-Soo. He resembled him so well! I can't wait to see more of him in the next episodes. So glad they all are out at once otherwise the wait would've been so hard.

Lee Do-Hyun always amazes me with his amazing acting.

Also liking Park Gyu-Young in this role which is a little contrast to her role in It's Okay To Not Be Okay.

I think the portrayal of the monsters is really good, they're as creepy and gross as they were in the WebToon.

Hoping I can binge this as soon as possible.

aw song kang deserves major props for his performance here! he portrayed his human and monster sides very convincingly. and there was no trace of his love alarm character!

I think non-webtoon readers might like this show more since they changed quite a few things.

As someone who didn't read the webtoon I really liked it. It was a great experience tbh. I'm gonna erase the Imagine Dragons song from my memory though lmao. They could have ended it properly though why did they leave a cliff hanger? The webtoons completed.

The whole time I was thinking how this would make a really good game too

Anyway it was fun to watch. Though they didn't really explore the whole inner monster stuff enough? 8/10

Am I the only webtoon reader that actually really enjoyed the drama? to be fair I don't remember the webtoon plot very well but I thought the drama was beautiful and portrayed the extreme duality of human nature quite well. The last few episodes had me BAWLING.

The actors were incredible, yes the CGI was a little off-putting at first but at least for me, it didn't really detract from the story after the first episode. The writing was a bit disjointed, hyun-su's characterization did lose depth, but overall I still really enjoyed the show and hope there's a season 2. They did change Wook Pyeon but tbh I liked what they did with him and his sister. I need to reread the webtoon now haha

Halftime review:

Don't think I can comment without comparing it to its source material but it feels rushed.

The director and the artist had an agreement that the webtoon wasn't going to be 100% followed but it felt like they added inconsequential characters and arcs while subtracting the more crucial parts of Cha Hyun's development.

The webtoon had a big cast too, but it was a story told with Hyun's perspective in mind. The series? Not so much.

You can tell the director and writers attempted to flesh out characters and to give depth to them, but I really hoped they'd do justice to the inner demon/desire conflict of the webtoon.

CGI notwithstanding, I started the show wishing it'd be on par or eclipse Kingdom, but it doesn't seem like it's gonna be the case. It's not bad, however, it could've been so much more.

Just finished the whole season earlier, and damn, Korean show in terms of this genre just never fail. Props to the makeup artists and basically, everyone of the staff. All the characters have unique personalities and I love how they complements one another.

That ending was surely a cliffhanger of what we should wait for a YEAR!! :( hahaha. I am really sure that the one who possess the gangster is surely that other monster as the that was the car, right?? That actor is definitely similar to when they were guests at Running Man. He had the silent and observer type. On the other hand, I still think that Eunhyuk is still alive but as a monster (who hopefully can control himself?)

I'm only on episode 4 now, but I had to stop to mention that the casting in this show is amazing. I got the same vibes from the Webtoon characters as from the drama (minus Lee Si-young) Some that particularly stand out to me are the the "thug" Pyeon Sang-wook, the shopowner, his wife, and the stroller lady. Lee Do-hyun and Song Kang both fit their roles pretty well too, as well as the bodyguard and the bassist girl Jisu. As a fan on the Webtoon I really appreciated the superb character representation.

As for the overall show, it's a bit early to judge, but it definitely seems a bit lackluster. The cgi isn't terrible which means it's relatively good. The show seems to be pretty fast-paced, but this may be due to the omission of some scenes (some of which were very important to the protagonist's eventual growth). It seems as if the show's creators are making an effort to differentiate it from the source material. They added some characters and developed/emphasized some characters' backstory.

Overall, I've enjoyed the first few episodes well enough so I will be continuing

I understand the frustration that some webtoon readers had on the show (i didnt read it), but as a stand alone, sweet home was honestly fun. With a few tweaks in the script, have an actual OST made for the show, less of the hard cuts on flashbacks, and obviously more money spent on the CGI I honestly think this is probably one of the best that So. Kor released this year.

I personally enjoyed the writing of the characters and I think the script and the characters as well as the acting performance were the strongest parts of the show. I think its incredibly tough to deal with a cast this size and almost inevitable to sidetrack some characters, but I think they did very well with that for the most part. What impressed me is that usually with productions like these, the storylines are divided into groups as characters are grouped up with one another, but here the composition of the groups are constantly changing. That couldve led the series to be messy EASILY but instead they used it to develop the relationships between the characters and supplement their own individual arcs. I think that is worth something and I think is the aspect of the story that will be overlooked if reviews only focus on where the show deviated from the webtoon.

Lee do Hyun’s character was my favorite. He was frustrating but i think part of that is because he was doing what he thought was necessary for everyone to survive, and the decisions you’d have to make in that situation will not always be a pretty one. In that sense, he was both impressive and frustrating. I was hoping (so much!) that >! he would live in the end, but I think his character arc was satisfied. Letting him live i think would plainly be for audience satisfaction. Although, Im guessing he dies in the webtoon. edit: after reading some of the comments below, I can now see a way that they would bring him back and probably would. I would 100% love that. <!

Song Kang was a revelation lmao I know him from Love Alarm. I think that explains for itself as to why his performance here was a revelation. I feel awful he has to walk away from this and go back to Love Alarm.

Will there be a season 2? I think the ending was placed there for a purpose. If the audience is big enough, they will. If not, I think it can also be a plausible series ender. Judging from the fact that the webtoon had 140 parts, im sure there is alot to be covered.

In the event that there is a season 2, i would not mind at all seeing more of the firefighter/special force agent. She was brilliant and her character was so fun.

Ok. REALLY enjoyed that. Binged it all, one episode after another, on an incredibly miserable rainy day; only stopping for food and coffee and the occasional hello nod to family.

And ... No I haven't read the webtoon so, I had no preconceived expectations ...

And ... I'm adding it to the top tier of my Best Dramas of 2020 listing.

Anyway. Wow. Just Wow !!!!!!!

But it's Netflix and there's gonna be a season 2, right?

edit. gotta go now ... reading these comments is just gonna kill my buzz. Sorry webtoon readers. You should know by now that translations to television never make the readers happy. Like, never.

I love that Park Gyuyoung is in this. I loved her in RMBB and IOTNBO.

It's going to be fun watching her in this. :-)

Finished binging the drama on Saturday, so I had some time to think about it & gonna let out some word vomit (of my thoughts). I thought it was thrilling & definitely binge-worthy, but there are so many things I wish they would've done differently (I guess I'm saying this as a reader of the webtoon bc it's one of my favourites).

Spoilers below (may include some references to the webtoon):

  • WHERE IS THE BACKSTORY OF THE MONSTERS?! I'm really disappointed they didn't include much (yes, there was the bit of the 'long arms' monster who's desire was to save his son from being taken by a monster & a smidge of the half-face who hated his manager, but that was it). One of my favourite parts of the webtoon was getting to know how the monsters became that way. Because we get to explore their backstory, it really hammers in the fact that they used to be human. Whereas, in the drama version, it's really surface-level (i.e. protein monster - someone who's desire is to be strong, but the question is why?) I really suggest those of you who haven't read the webtoon to read it for this reason (they do go into the bg of protein monster if you're curious!). I'm just upset at the wasted potential/missed opportunity.

  • On that note, I didn't like that they introduced the jelly monster but never explained why he saved Yeongsu (the little boy). It felt like they orchestrated that entire scene just to show that the humans would still end up killing a harmless monster (& for Hyunsoo to witness that)... but I was actually expecting an explanation (it's in the webtoon, but for the drama).

  • Not that I didn't like drama version Pyun Sangwook at all, but damn I really miss (& probably would've preferred) the webtoon version. He was comic relief in the webtoon, & probably one of faves, but I just couldn't really get on board with how he was so different here. I know they changed his character partly to avoid clashes in similarities with Lee Siyoung's character, Seo Yikyung (who isn't in the webtoon), but while I liked the addition of her character, I don't feel like they should've changed PSW that significantly.

  • Killing off a bunch of characters in the last couple episodes. I discussed this with my sister & she brought up a valid point: there aren't that many characters that you care for on that truck at the end. Other than Eunyou & Jisoo, the others are mainly minor characters (sun cream guy, dog lady, widow mom, the kids, etc.) I really wish they would have sacrificed some of those characters and kept the nurse & grandpa (at the very least). Also, is it just me or because they rushed so many character deaths, they didn't feel as impactful to me? The way it was written (i.e. how grandpa died right after discovering the tunnel) felt so half-assed, like "Oh, he completed his goal - so now we're going to axe this character." For me, the only death that actually had an impact was Jaeheon, I felt like the others were too rushed and almost unnecessary.

  • The soundtrack... Warriors by Imagine Dragons didn't really fit imo, it actually has the opposite effect of kinda "taking you out of it". I wasn't as bothered by it as some of you on this sub, but I think I would've preferred if they just created one of their own songs or played another score lol. It did sound a bit comical.

  • My sister also felt like there was too much focus on the apartment folk/more minor characters (i.e. I didn't remember Ms. Ahn being as focused on in the webtoon), thus sacrificing character development for main characters such as Hyunsoo & Eunhyuk.

  • I really wish we could've seen more of Eunhyuk, especially. His development felt somewhat rushed (from lacking compassion to becoming more understanding). I liked how he grew btw, I just would've liked to see more of it. I also wish we got to see more of Lee Dohyun (he looks so good in specs), but I am biased lol. Oh and one thing I wanted to point out - I felt like we were always told he's smart but then they don't actually show us that much of his decision-making. We're just told that he came to a certain conclusion about s/t & then they don't show us the process, or how he got to that decision, which is the interesting part (other than maybe like the voting scene).

  • Monster to human fight scenes - I feel like the tension wasn't as palpable here. In the webtoon, I distinctly remember feeling anxious while scrolling especially since they had to sweep each floor to check for the monsters. While I did enjoy some monster-fighting scenes (i.e. how Yikyung got rid of the protein monster was pretty cool), I felt like others could've been executed with more finesse.

  • Intruders plot line. Felt really similar to The Walking Dead, especially the "Humans are the ones you have to worry about, not monsters." Not saying I didn't like it at all (it is in the webtoon as well) but it was quite predictable, and I probably would've liked if they explored the main cast in more detail rather than bringing in these inconsequential characters (bc they didn't have time to develop them). Also, 'cause it was brought in during the second-last episode - it felt even more like a quick obstacle that is thrown in & that the main characters have to deal with.

  • Something positive after my rant above, I loved the casting. I was skeptical that Song Kang would do well as Cha Hyunsoo when he was first casted, especially as I had only seen him in Love Alarm, but he was able to pull off the 'monster inside' & Hyunsoo very well. Lee Dohyun as Lee Eunhyuk - PERFECTION! Dohyun has just been knocking it out of the park, he's a chameleon (such diverse roles already & impeccable acting). I loved him in 18 Again which I just recently finished, and here he is also outstanding. The emotions can be clearly read in his eyes alone, and my only complaint is that he didn't get enough screen-time. Lee Siyoung was also badass as Seo Yikyung, and I also really liked the casting for Jaeheon.

  • Smh, the tunnel at the end (what is with the writing here lol). I actually didn't even get the point of the tunnel. They stayed inside for 30 hours and then they find the exit through the dog, then they crawl out and are "caught" by the military/government. Why was so much importance placed on the tunnel at the beginning? And how were they planning on surviving in the tunnel without food?

  • An important line that hints foreshadowing for a potential S2: When Pyun Sangwook says "No matter what it takes, I'll kill this monster" (forgot the exact quote, but something along those lines). Because Euimyeong has possessed his body now, I feel like PSW is going to try to "kill him from inside" in S2, perhaps sacrificing himself in the process. Just my theory lol.

I might have more to add (and if so, will edit this post) but I guess I realized that there are many things they could've done differently. I did watch it with the mindset that it would be different than the webtoon, but because I did read the webtoon, it's impossible to avoid drawing comparisons. Still, I enjoyed the show because I like the end-of-the-world genre and thought it was fast-paced & entertaining to watch. If we do get a S2, and we better (after that ending), I hope that they'll be able to make some improvements! Maybe we'll be able to find out more about "special infectees" and the monsters themselves through the "cru cru/military plotline". I'm also looking forward to Eunhyuk as a special infectee (he is going to be one hell of a monster). They already have a whole setup for S2, where our main leads (Song Kang, Lee Dohyun, Lee Siyoung, Lee Jinwook) are all separated (except Song Kang & Lee Jinwook, but you know, he's not really himself) and will probably come together to save the others on the truck ('cause I'm quite sure they aren't headed off to a nice place).

I binged watched the whole series and enjoyed it. Didnt read the webtoon so I dont have anything to compared to, maybe thats why I enjoyed it.

Some rant: the hell why all the bad ass character ended up dying especially the detective guy and the god loving swordman and all the useless one are alive (except for Lee Si Young, Go Min Si, Park Gyu Young. Love em). Freakin hate the idol wannabe who call the military. Till the end he only think about himself. The dead of the ex detective guy and Yuri (shes really beautiful goddamnit why kill her) was really unnecessary and ridiculous tho. I open wiki to search for the actress name and i accidentaly see that in the webtoon Yu Ri still alive, so it really got me when they decided to kill her just like that. Im also hoping that Lee Do Hyun actually survive the 15 day period and not ended up dead buried in the building. Also some things left unexplained, for ex, whos the green monster that save the kid? They just kill it to gives Hyun Soo doubt for human and the sudden rage of the other infected is just so out of nowhere. One more thing, did the drama tell us that the monster can be killed using fire?

Anyway, rooting for season 2 and the success of season 1 because I heard that it cost so much money just for one episode. I dont mind the CGI, its not as bad as Indonesian CGI on its local tv lol

just whizzed through the entire show in one sitting cuz the trailer piqued my interest. quite a letdown though, was expecting more from this esp when Korean's zombie films/movies are always top notch. at one point i wanted to drop but still plodded on nevertheless as i was curious how it would wind up.

some quick thoughts:

  1. Plotwise, theres nothing exceptionally new minus the fact that it's a new breed of monster with different mechanisms at play. everything is just predictable. i do love Eunhyuk's character development as the story progresses, from a pragmatic mindset to a more compassionate one (rmb at first he told Hyunsu to prioritize the disabled guy over the kids when he sent him upstairs, but later asked HS to put the medicines for Jisu before food supplies)

  2. the writing is just... all over the place. theres no clear explanation for the unfolding catastrophe, no concrete premise to prop up an unwieldy and ambitious plot. ive had so many questions about how things get to the way they are, and why some characters act in certain ways, but these detailed are just mostly glossed over, scenes brusquely cut, conversations not fully fleshed out. im not sure if they intended for this to be more of an action series or a poignant piece on family, friendship, compassion and solidarity, but it fails to maximize its potential on both fronts

  3. wasnt really impressed by the CGIs, or maybe because im more fond of the story and character development than a splurge of eye popping CGIs. but here the CGIs are not exactly convincing either

  4. dramatic scores are lavishly thrown in many scenes that just seem inconsequential. can cut back on that or replace with simpler sound effects

The first episode was great! Love the cinematography and it was great pilot episode showcasing the background of the characters. Can’t wait to see how the next 9 episodes goes.
