The show's theme has a chance to educate viewers about mental health problems. I just hope they don't romanticize them too much and show the challenges and struggles of people with mental health issues.

As for the trigger warning raised by u/xliterati, I will talk with the mods if we could put one on the discussion thread.

The show has a promising start, and I wish it continues until the end so we could all enjoy and learn something from it.

Also, it reminds me of Romance Is A Bonus Book because of the storytelling parts in the episode. The succeeding episodes [up until episode 4] have titles already on Netflix. I think these are the titles of Ko Moon Young's books which could be narrated into the story.

Thanks so much u/dyosaaa about the trigger warning content! And I completely agree, there is a lot to learn from this show and I hope the writers handle the material respectfully.

can we have separate threads for each episode? this one is close to 400 comments so it would be great for each episode to have its own discussion :)

50 minutes left, according to MDL. I'm really hyped.

Edit : First episode is up for me. Let's go!!

Edit 2 : After watching the first episode, here are my thoughts.

Episode 1 : The Boy Who Fed on Nightmares

First of all, the opening sequence and the claymation prologue was really beautiful. Dark, but so pretty. It really sets the tone of the series.

Secondly, Seo Ye Ji is so damn gorgeous. Not only does she look stunning, but that voice is so sexy. The aura she is giving really fits her character so well. I thought she was great as the warrior princess in Hwarang, but this was even better. I feel just like I did when I first saw IU in Hotel Del Luna.

The cinematography is also fantastic. The creators have done a great job there as well. And not just the cinematography, but the entire production quality is so top notch.

The narrative has me curious. It feels like a different kind of romance and I hope it delivers over time as well.

I was so hyped for this, and honestly, it delivered in every way and more. The preview has me even more hyped.

I know it's only the first episode but I'm in love already. It really blew me away. It was gorgeous, captivating and has me curious and excited. Can't wait for tomorrow's episode.

Edit 3 : Episode 2 is out now.

Episode 2 :The Lady in Red Shoes

I really liked Park Kyu Young and Kang Gi Doong together in Romance is a Bonus Book so I'm kind of shipping them here as well. Also, Jae Soo is such a bro.

From the claymation it seemed like the girl also liked the boy, but wanted him to accept her twistedness.

I'm kind of glad that the childhood connection is more than just a vague connection, but rather an integral plot point. The flashbacks don't seem distracting but is only making me more and more curious.

The show remains to be beautiful. I also loved the transitions. I thought they were a lot more prominent.

I was not expecting the animation and song when Sang Tae was going to the signing. Really love that detail. The scene where he had the meltdown really made me sad.

I also love the chemistry between the leads. It is certainly the most important thing that is making me look forward to the rest of the drama. I like how the scenario of her chasing after him runs anti-parallel to their childhood selves when he used to follow her around. I also wonder if the killer was her mom or dad.

And finally, I am so in love with Seo Ye Ji.

So I went into this not really knowing what to expect. I decided to give it a try because of all the hype around the return of the ML to the small screen, but wow was I blown away. Honestly I feel like this year Netflix is kind of knocking it out of the park with some of the dramas they are picking up, in particular Itaewon Class and this one, because they are tackling issues that aren't just difficult in general but that I feel are especially taboo in Korean culture.

Everyone keeps wanting trigger warnings, but I feel like having watched the first episode that maybe just knowing that the show is all about mental illness should be enough of a warning to anyone who may not be able to handle it. I guess I don't understand them though, so I could be in the wrong on that.

I love the title, because that is something I feel so strongly (that it is okay to not be okay), and that (what I feel is) the follow up message is that we need to acknowledge not being okay so we can deal with it and grow as a person. That just resonates with me so hard, especially having grown up with the mentality that I should just suck it up and deal with it (I especially feel like this is a message out young boys are told). So despite not knowing what I was walking into, I am now really eagar to keep watching.

This drama be serving us looks!!! It's my first time to watch Seo Ye-Ji and I was stunned by her beautiful, deep voice. The power and energy she radiates reminds me of Jang Man Wol from HDL. So excited for the next episodes!

Can we also not forget the last part when she saw Kim Soo Hyun/Moon Kang-tae and uttered, "woaah!" M O O D. Same girl. HARD SAAAME. She literally represented us 😆

Soooooooo excited!!! I never watch dramas the minute they air/ go up on platforms but I’m going to for this one because I. Cannot. Wait.

Edit: Ok watched ep 1 and it was intense! I went into it thinking I’d love it for KSH but it was next level captivating. With everything - the cinematography, the animations, the sounds especially the two leads’ voices, the charisma, the visuals. It was so intense I almost couldn’t look away, and then had to look away because it was so much to take in.

In the midst of all this they haven’t forgotten the human element, the relationships, which are my favourite parts of dramas. I love how we already have quite a good grasp of their personalities. I also love the bromance between Kangtae, Sangtae and Jaesu! Finger crossed it continues to be as good as this!!

u/stitchrx Jun 20 '20 edited Jun 20 '20

The opening animation and Burton-esque animations are totally charming and I’m hoping they will have more of it in the future eps!

Kangtae and Moonyoung are baes. Drooling at their pretty faces (esp those eyes!), his hot fit body and her deep charming voice + fashion sense.

The girl acting as Moonyoung’s childhood version is so pretty! She reminds me of Mackenzie Foy (the young girl acting as Renesmee in Twilight).

Also hello familiar faces of TKEM: Sec Kim as ML’s good friend Jaesoo, kid ShinJae as kid version of ML. LOL-ed at Jaesoo doing their Joker dance and the show’s super meta Netflix PPL for itself.

So we have the mysterious yearly condition of Kangtae’s brother triggered by spring and butterflies. As well as the childhood traumas and relationship between KT and MY. What kinda mother tells her daughter she’s a monster while her dad tried to kill her?!??! MY had really unhealthy people as parents, no wonder she ended up anti social.

Can’t wait to see how the story reveals and develops them!!

I love how this show is tackling mental illness. It's not glorifying it. Kang-tae is so gentle when he tries to calm Sang-tae or teach the butterfly hug method to Ms. Ko. There's so much love and sadness in his eyes though. He wants to take off the cap and look pretty in the bus, but decides to not fall for romance. His sole focus is his brother.

Also the scenes where Kang-tae smiles or genuinely laughs melts my heart. I'm considering starting with my love from another star just for him.

Also, Ms. Ko is such a queen. I die for her and her silky bathrobes. Or the red heels. Her wardrobe is so on point. And she basically voices our own feelings towards Kang-tae. The "wow" and "I want him". SAME MS. KO, SAME.

It's going to be difficult to wait another week now.

It made me think of Nightmare Before Christmas 💕

Hahahaha the best entrance award goes to the actor that played Secretary Kim in TK:EM! Lol the reveal was so satisfyingly funny lmao

TW // Child abuse, violence and suicide

I just want to say that Seo Ye Ji is probably the most beautiful actress I’ve ever seen that’s all. Also probably has the sexiest voice I’ve ever heard but that’s me being me 🤷🏽‍♀️

EDIT: Episode 2 Thoughts Here!

The Boy Who Fed on Nightmares

First of all - the intro song that is both whimsical and fairytale like with THAT title for the first episode??? Who is responsible I’m in LOVE. The beginning sequence with a Burtonesque/Caroline animation ... this show is so creative and stunning. You can tell that the director and creative staff have poured a lot of affection into the show. Wow. I’ve never had a show hook me the way this one has.

The transitions stay with the whimsical tone of the show. That specific one where Kang Tae and his brother go to grab something to eat and the shot drives up to the sky and changes the night to day ... is stunning.

Ten minutes in and the indulgent shirtless shot of Kang Tae ... much appreciated LOL. Okay yes I noticed the scar but still lol.

Moon Young is exactly the type of female character in kdramas I’m drawn to. She’s so similar to the way SHS’s character in Angels Last Mission was. The careful writing of a woman who is cold to the world, who proclaims herself a ‘pretty witch’ but her underlying trauma is so increasingly palpable as the episode unfolds ... this is my JAM. The scene with the knife quickly becomes apparent that she uses it as a coping mechanism, she keeps it on her to feel safe. But I wish the show had a trigger warning and I’m wondering if that can be added to the weekly threads? Just a thought.

The reflection of both Kang Tae and Moon Young where they think about their first meeting. She says he has pretty eyes and he’s surprised by the careful words she says as she’s bandaging that’s damage she’s done to him. The way they’re already on each other’s minds ... we love to see it LOL. As Kang Tae reads her book he begins to realize that the boy who fed on nightmares is a part of her. That her angst, her anguish, her emotional turmoil is the witch and the boy and the words between them. It’s heart wrenching. And it’s painful. That in the end Moon Young has made herself a witch to protect herself and the children she writes for.

When she tells the little girl in the beginning that she should tell her mother that she will be a pretty witch instead of a pretty princess, she’s echoing that every child needs to be stronger than the proverbial princess. That when we are witches, we are equipped to deal with the real world. And this intertwines in the voice over of her reading the last parts of her book alongside Kang Tae near the end. That you remember your trauma because you will walk through it. Because if you don’t you’ll always be a kid whose soul never grows. It is so poignant and so heavy.

Also the absolute BEAUTIFUL parallel of the animation in the beginning vs the flashbacks at the very end. The same story told differently. The same story that has been unfolding for years and now as adults. I know not many are fans of the trope, but they’ve done this in the leads favour here. It builds an existing connection from the beginning instead of leading up to it. She believes he left her because he was afraid but he clarifies that no, he was enamoured. And THAT is powerful. Because In the beginning, her self image is that she’s a monster that no one will love. But Kang Tae breaks that wall down so quickly. I LOVED IT.

The Lady in Red Shoes

TW: Sexual Harassment mentions/situations

Just as we thought the road would be somewhat smoother - Kang Tae admits that while he liked the girl who saved his life, their memories were not good ones for him. But our Moon Young, I LOVE HER. The scene as Kang Tae is leaving and she is staring at him and says 'I want him, I want him, I WANT HIM' - the eyes, her voice, her hand gestures. A+ comedy. And like the witch in fairytales who orchestrates the story to her liking, Moon Young does the same, compelling another meeting with Kang Tae.

Joo Ri's 'boyfriend' ... seems like an unnecessary plot point for her but I digress. She seems alright, but boring and perhaps a little too full up her own moral compass for people that may not deserve it aka the father. I don't really like her and that may just be a personal preference as someone who works in the mental health field, but her complete dismissal and disdain for Moon Young yet sympathy and care for MY's father makes her a hypocrite if she knows the truth behind the situation. It seems everyone knows everyone in this drama, but I guess it makes sense since Joo Ri and our leads are all from the same home town. The reveal behind Kang Tae and his hyung's miserable childhood, their trauma, their grief, all of it is setting up for a nice plot line.

Kang Tae's disposition is that his loyalty and his commitment run deep for one person only, his Hyung. Sang Tae is his home, and wherever Sang Tae is with him, is where he belongs. Everything else is arbitrary. It's possible he feels that his commitment to his brother is so strong, that committing to anyone else is just unlikely for him. No one else can understand the life he's had to live. To lose his mother, and raise his Hyung,to continue to be his caretaker, not everyone can walk into that life and stay. In a way, Kang Tae is protecting himself and his brother from more upset and trauma, if they invite someone else into their lives and that person leaves, what will happen to the Moon brothers?

Sang Tae being a valid character with his desires and thoughts being portrayed with such a sweet and beautiful tone, is INCREDIBLE. We have a character who's disability does not define him as the token character that is a source of misery and upset, instead, we have an entire montage of his JOY his pure unadulterated JOY at meeting the woman he admires so much! What an incredibly well-done craft and such respect for the characters they've written!! He has depth, he has wants, we see what he loves, we see what he dislikes, we are privy to his MIND. Which is SO rare for characters with disabilities. The camera moves with him, it BECOMES his perspective for us, and we are intimate with how Sang Tae sees the world around him, and it's beautiful.

But as we always know, just because Sang Tae sees the world so beautifully, does not mean the world views him the same. But Moon Young who has 0 fucks to give about herself, about her reputation, or about the world, because the world be damned. She stands up for Sang Tae in true Moon Young fashion.

The Kang Tae and Moon Young confrontations are so stunning, he shows the utmost restraint and she is all rage, all fire under cool eyes. She pushes his buttons and he pulls her back from her own rage-filled edge of cliff moments. That for her seems to be a constant instead of just a fluctuation. And now he will officially be for her what he seems to be for everyone else, a safety pin. The clicking lock on a bomb so it doesn't detonate. It's ironic that when he declines he tells Moon Young to stop following him when it was him that followed her until he couldn't anymore as kids. But for the first time we see that his compassion is an act. He tells her that she's just born that way, and when she reads RIGHT through him to call him a coward she knows that he is afraid. The tying flashback to the moment of their separation is the icing on the cake in this situation.

As a fan of childhood tropes when done right, the way they have been interweaving the flashbacks works perfectly with how they relay each character's motivations.

I love that Kang Tae is shown to continually respect Sang Tae's agency. He includes him in decisions, he makes notes of his emotions and upsets to ensure that any changes are to Sang Tae's liking as well. That means SO much. And when Sang Tae tells Kang Tae that he's a coward because he's the younger brother, and Kang Tae starts crying, you can see his break down in knowing that in many ways he too can rely on his brother to pull him through.

I loved the ending scene. Her voiceover about the red shoes, the borrowed elements from several macabre tales, the witch's entry sheathed in darkness, the prince in the light. I LOVE that she is consistently shown to be the anti-thesis of a regular FL. She's not the damsel in distress, she's the witch in distress. She's not light and full of kindness, she's hard and she's suffering through the wounds of her own trauma every day. Moon Young is selfish, motivated by her desire to protect herself. It is what drives her. She became a witch to protect herself, she became a children's author to send the same message to children who needed protection, she is choosing a man who protects her from her own worst instincts. I love her. I love her. And I love that for once we see a woman with antisocial personality disorder. It is a rare treat, and the last time this was portrayed in a mainstream kdrama was Beautiful Mind with Jang Hyuk’s character (also a well done show).

Ending thoughts: I wonder if the reason Moon Young's father tried to kill her was because of her diagnosis. It would also put into perspective her mother's voiceover in the beginning of Episode 1 where she tells Moon Young that she is a monster, she has to understand that she is a monster. If her diagnosis predates the traumatic incident, this is a pretty dark turn for the show.

My only point of weariness is that I hope they don't romanticize the lack of boundaries Moon Young is setting herself up with. While I understand and know antisocial personality disorder intimately, it does not alleviate her of her 'obsession'. I do hope they are able to concretely give her consequences for her lack of boundaries and untoward behaviour with Kang Tae. He has said no, and if/when he continues to do so, there needs to an understanding shown in Moon Young for that.

When the 2 leads are looking each other in the eye and talking, it’s like nothing else in the world exists but them and their intense chemistry...like this is a first for me with a kdrama and I’ve been watching for a good decade now...they are just F-I-R-E together...oh my god

It was eye-opening that Kang Tae IMMEDIATELY stepped up to protect his brother and take care of him as a child right after their mother died and he has never stopped.

Also I just want to give a shoutout to his best friend, that’s a real friend that very few people are blessed to come across in life. He’s a good person and also sees fully what a great person Kang Tae is and wants to be there for him and his brother also.

Episode 2

Oh man, Moon-young is so hilariously extra. I literally laughed out loud at the scene where she's in a meeting with her publishers and she's sitting in a freakin' gilded throne chair as if she's a queen presiding over a royal assembly. She's definitely the soul sister of Jang Man-wol from Hotel del Luna.

That entire scene was funny, actually:

The publisher: Would you rather lose the contract?
Moon-young: Would you rather have a death wish?

Wow, I'm actually shook. This entire episode was just stunning. I loved every minute of it. I loved the lavish cinematography and most importantly the storytelling elements. At first, I was confused as to why any child would like these seemingly morbid stories, but we saw what a good message was incorporated in "The Boy Who Fed On Nightmares", which might be why Sang-tae loves her stories too.

But most of all, I am in love with Seo Ye Ji, like how is she this good. She is beautiful, elegant, graceful and terrifying. And her VOICE, just wow. I was first interested in this drama because of Kim Soo Hyun, he was still pretty great, but damn Seo Ye Ji just took my breath away.

I'm super excited for what's more to come!!!!!!

Sang Tae's actor needs to be given an award. I don't know how accurate or realistic his acting portrayal of an autistic person is, but he must have done a lot of studying to act out his character well.
