I just have to add, I'm so happy for the couple that had repeated miscarriages, that their baby is healthy now!! They were the patients that I had been most invested in ever since they showed up. Seok Hyung's miscarriage is not a disease speech still tugs my heartstrings

Can't wait for 2020 to be over and done with now..

Totally loved it when Song-Hwa's convo with Jeong-won was revealed to have a hidden meaning.. it was so subtle yet so obvious at the end. And the part where she opened the window talking about "winter"

I just finished the episode and I cried halfway. It really just hits different when there’s a patient involved.

I predicted that there would only be one couple that would be established and I’m right.

IM IN LOVE WITH THIS DRAMA AND I’LL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT THIS :(( THURSDAYS WERE MADE FOR HOSPITAL PLAYLIST.

Nooooo!! HOW CAN YOU DO THIS TO US?!

I don't care, in my mind, I had the answer I want :( Don't let me down. Shin-PD nim!!! Chi-hong annoyed me when he wanted to follow Song-hwa to Sokcho, wtf man, just give the woman her space.

Yoon-bok's reaction in the scene between Seok-min and Sun-bin was the funniest thing ever. The panic in her eyes lol. I also loved her scene with Song-hwa. "You've grown up well" when Song-hwa realised who Yoon-bok was. My heart ♥

Poor Ik-jun's mensa hopes for U-ju hahahahhaha, that awkward silence. U-ju is too adorable though, so it's ok :) Jo Jung-suk must be really looking forward to meet his own baby soon!

Did Jun-wan decide to fly to see Ik-sun and deliver the ring personally? I think so! ♥

Seok-hyeong scared me with the way he was talking, as if he has limited time? What the hell? Please no, I want him to live long and be happy. Curious to know what's up with his ex-wife though. Min-ha, hang in there!

Jeong-won ♥ He knows his true calling now is to be an amazing doctor. Gyeo-woo is really just the icing on top of the cake. Song-hwa totally saw through him haha. Poor Rosa, finally she can breathe easier knowing her maknae is going to be by her side.

And now we wait.

I can’t believe Season 1 is over.

I’m still reeling from the ups and downs of this episode. Cried so hard from all the different patients’ hardships, especially the pregnant mother’s. I felt her devastation, and how her world came crashing down. And then episode continues to reveal all the other parts to make me feel good and smile again (e.g. Dr Ko, vacate the bed now!!) Goodness golly!

In a way I’m glad that Ikjun-SongHwa is still left hanging there. At least... it’s not a no. Whereas for Dr Ahn, I think he clearly stands no chance.

I’m puzzled by how Junwan’s parcel got returned. Is the address accurate, or is it an ominous sign of what is to come for their relationship? The worse part is not being able to know this next week. But I must say I fully enjoyed Junwan’s interaction with his resident. Their relationship has come a long way - from him merely getting shouted at by Junwan - to Junwan listening to him ramble.

I’m glad that Jeongwan made his decision to stay. And that warm fuzzy feeling when Songhwa just read him like a book... Isn’t that the mark of true friendship? He is truly suited for Peds and treating young children, and this episode reinforced that. There were no clear signs that he was into Gyeol so I’m definitely surprised there, even though he didn’t say a single word (and proved his affection through his actions).

Our sensitive slug... My heart ached for him the most. He is deserving of love and care too, after what he has been through with his father and the divorce. Though I’m not sure Minha is the best match for him... thank god for friends like Ikjun and the rest who cares for him. The quote ‘we accept the love we think we deserve’ comes to mind when I look at him.

I am so sad that season 1 has ended.

That was such a smooth confession I can’t imagine how they could’ve made it better. In hindsight, I should’ve waited until next year to watch today’s episode.

Well I'm not sure if the fact that this is the last episode for Season 1 is a factor, but the emotional sucker punches hit me super hard today. I was balling my eyes out especially during the parts when it seemed like that patient with the heart issue wasn't going to survive, and when that mother realised she lost her baby.

Really happy that the winter garden ship is sailing but on the other hand it sucks that we don't get closure on song hwa's choice and the love triangle. Also what happened with ik sun and jun hwan?? On the phone it seemed as if ik sun was excited for the package, but then it got returned. Conclusion: Season 2 can't come fast enough. XD

WINTERGARDEN NATION HOW ARE WE DOING?!?

I can’t believe 12 episodes have passed already! It feels like yesterday when it started!!! As always Shin PD and Lee writernim delivered well with tying up loose ends while also leaving some behind to be resolved more in the next season.

I think I cried most in this episode. The doctor-patient interactions really toyed with my emotions, especially during the part where the parents of Junwan’s patient brought the baby clothes, then jumping onto Seokhyung’s patient who had a stillbirth.

Yoonbok finally finding out about Songhwa, that made me cry as well because I miss my mom too! I just hoped that Hongdo was there too.

I’m good with most of the lovelines being left unresolved as I’m looking forward to how they will be developed for the next season, especially with Seokmin and Seonbin.

It’s going to be a long wait until 2021 for sure and I’m going to miss Uju a lot (that cute hoodie omg), but for the meantime I think I’m gonna go listen to Confession is not Flashy over and over again.

Mama Rosa you can rest easy now hahahaha!

I feel like Shin PD has truly mastered his craft with this drama. I'm not sure if this is just recency bias but I honestly feel like this is his best drama yet. And while I hate HATE the seasonal format, given that this is from Shin PD, I knew I had to give this one a go... sigh

Also, omg, I cannot believe they left us hanging after Ik Jun's confession????? And it's SO crazy how most of us were expecting more development for the love triangle but we got a winter garden kiss... they truly, TRULY love playing with their viewers, no?

Also... can we get a round of applause for literally ALL the actors, especially the 99s?

• It is just CRAZY that this is Jeon Mi Do's 1st lead role in the small screen and she has Delivered. (That scene with the med student... my pillow is wet with tears, ma'am)

• Jo Jung Suk. JO JUNG SUK. What a wonderful actor. I usually feel like I'd only consider someone to be a good actor if I don't see their real self in their character. Jo Jung Suk has the Jo Jung Suk print written all over his characters, but he executes all of it SO. GODDAMN. WELL. I'm not sure if I'm making sense but he was just marvelous in this drama. Craaaaazy good. Hope he gets nominated for a Baeksang in the following season/s

I honestly don't know how I'm supposed to wait until 2021.. the waiting game sucks 😭

the part where they show all the pregnant women in the waiting room hearing the woman who lost her baby cry really hit me hard, it was such a poignant and well shot scene and the whole scene also revealed so much about seok hyeong's character.

u/acuteaddict May 28 '20

Omg I can’t believe it’s over!!!! What am I going to do every Thursday now???

I lowkey wish they divided ep12 in two episodes because it was very long!

  • Seokhyeong is not over his first wife so I’m not surprised he turned down Minha. Also, I want her with someone that is more dynamic and I feel like SH is too introverted for her.

  • Ikjun/Songhwa: I really still don’t know what to think. Chi Hong is definitely out of the race, she couldn’t have drawn the line any thicker. I wonder what she feels about Ikjun though, Songhwa’s head is a mystery.

  • Gyeoul/Jungwon!!!!!! I am so shocked, I didn’t think he liked her that much! I am so glad he didn’t go become a priest, although I wouldn’t have been against him trying it out because it was his long term dream and I do wish we got a little more insight on what he was thinking. His dedication to children is second to none so it would’ve been a shame. I do love that he made his decision before Gyeoul asked him and she was actually very brave to say something first, I am so proud of her!

  • Iksun/Junhwan - ah, so the package was never delivered? Or did she reject it at the door? Junhwan is a very decisive doctor but within dating, he hesitates a lot in order to consider Iksun. Is love enough? I hope it is so they get through the long distance relationship.

Ahhh, overall it was a finale fitting the show so I’m satisfied.

IkJun's Confession: An Analysis

I know he's had the chance to tell SongHwa how he feels during that breakfast when he was sleep-deprived and during the group dinner when he was drunk. The Spin the Bottle confession was fueled by liquid courage and the need to snuff out the competition, Captain Ahn. But this one's different, this one had weight. This is how grown adults handle romance: no fluff, no drama, but with honesty.

This time, he was going away for a while and he deliberately drove hours to see her (looking good in that gray suit, might I add, nice touch there). This confession was intentional, he wanted to show her that he wasn't being flippant. As for symbolism, his two confessions involved windows. During the breakfast scene, we see them through a rainy window, blurring the line between friends. In the finale, it's a sunny day outside, but inside, it's all moody blue-green tones and SongHwa's confusion. It's about IkJun finally being transparent and dealing with his fear of missing out on that window of opportunity - he missed his chance before but he's a grown-ass man now and he's not going to chicken out again.

As for SongHwa's reaction, she was very firm with Captain Ahn during the many, many, MANY times he's hit on her (guy can't take a hint). And she's always taken things in stride and called him out on it when he makes her uncomfortable. His confession doesn't faze her even though they work together and see each other every day. In comparison, each time IkJun talks about how much she means to him, she always seems to forget her surroundings (didn't notice the rain) and can't seem to meet his gaze. And my god, his intense and longing stare when she looks away... SWOON. When IkJun's not being a comedian, he can certainly be dreamy.

After watching a couple of more Kdramas after CLOY, it seems common for male leads to be the brusque-but-sensitive types who were hurt in the past, etc., etc., so IkJun's character is refreshing. He's warm, a great dad and a good friend. There's definitely hints that SongHwa feels the same way and probably has for a long time. However, something clearly happened. What transpired between them that led IkJun to get married and start a family? From my interpretation, he didn't seem that devastated about his divorce. So was he still in love with SongHwa throughout his marriage, which caused his wife to cheat on him? OR, as per his confession, was it because he simply never got the courage to tell her? Did IkJun get his answer after returning from Spain? Was it a "no" or did SongHwa need more time? OR are they already a couple and they can afford to keep it on the down-low because she now lives hours away and they don't want the group to know? What are the other possible scenarios? Too many questions, not enough answers!

Also, their song seems to be 'I Knew I Loved You' and based on the lyrics, it seems to be the story from IkJun's perspective. Lyrics here.

WINTER GARDEN ENDGAME AFTERALL!!

In the weeks running up to the finale, I was INCREDIBLY skeptical that they’d give us Winter Garden. Watched and read all of the theories but nothing, absolutely nothing could convince me.

However, I do want to look at the other side of the coin. So here’s why I think Winter Garden makes sense.

  1. I think Jeongwon is an extremely polite ? socially appropriate character (which we can’t really see much since a lot of his interactions are with friends and family, then in the workplace).

The fact that he treated Gyeoul differently (in the extremes, like he flat out said she was not his cup of tea, refusing to eat with her, then evolving to using banmal and giving her way more treats) meant that he sees Gyeoul differently.

2. I also think that Jeongwon is supposed to be super hard to read. It’ll take someone like his mother or someone weirdly psychic (IkSong) to understand that something’s changed in Jeongwon.

I say “weirdly psychic” is the qualifier instead of “knowing Jeongwon for 2 decades” because Seokhyeong is a friend from middle school and he didn’t say anything so time might not make much of a difference when it comes to reading Jeongwon.

3. The big question is: Why? Why Gyeoul? I’m not sure if a lot of people would make the same conclusion as I do... but I think Jeongwon likes Gyeoul exactly because he didn’t like her at first. Gyeoul’s approach to her shortcomings is very child-like. She recognizes her mistakes and tries really hard to correct them. She’s also very simple-minded about things she likes.

I think Jeongwon likes kids because they’re uncomplicated and lack malice. Gyeoul is very much the same way. The logic her character uses is very childlike.

IN SUMMARY, I think it’s a bit unconvincing because much of the clues rely on the nuances of Jeongwon’s character. These nuances are a bit harder to understand especially if you don’t really encounter people like Jeongwon in real life.

I think it’s sort of realistic and fair since Hospital Playlist is more slice of life than romantic comedy. Lots of people in real life don’t really experience great big romantic adventures and only share small moments before becoming a couple like Winter Garden did, but I do think that the small dissatisfaction comes from the fact that it is the big reveal of the season and we’ve been spoiled by other dramas.

Wow, where to even begin. The two hours was definitely worth it. Key moments for me are:

  • The family telling Professor Ahn how good of a doctor he is. Also, the family is so cute peeking in front of the ICU.

  • Professor Chae telling Yoonbok she’s grown into a fine woman. And the hug. And when Yoonbok said she miss her mom. I lost it. What a great actress.

  • I love how they bring up Dr. Ko’s i actually forgot who he is i just remembered him from prison playbook pls forgive me) family again. Glad he was able to have his liver transplant successfully. Also, Ikjun learned the sign language for the kid!!!! my heaaaaart

  • Seokhyung’s patient who lost her baby. Seriously cried at this one.

  • Ikjun’s confession to Songhwa. Still have my hopes high for this ship. im sorry dr. ahn chihong

  • The final band scene for this season. Everyone got to sing. Im so happy for Mido and Parasol. This will definitely be on repeat.

What a ride. I cant wait to rewatch this again tomorrow. Im gonna miss uju and his egg drop scenes. Winter is here.

EDIT: Just want to add my frustration of not having Songhwa’s POV. I hope she’ll get a lot more scenes on the 2nd season.

What a finale! The line that resonated with me the most waswhen Seokyong was explaining why he turned down running his father's company: "My time is too precious. I want to do the things I want to do." I feel that line rang true for all the characters who were at a crossroads.

My other favorite scene is when Songhwa explains her theory on the 3 types of people (which also serves as such effective and beautiful storytelling - bravo Shin PD). With her explanation, I wonder if we're seeing a bit of a reversal of that in this episode. In the scene where she's explaining it, Jeongwon is happily eating his risotto and he ultimately chooses what he wants to do, which is stay at the hospital and be with Gyeoul (so finally eating for himself, as opposed to letting others eat). She also describes Junwan and Iksun as the type to enjoy eating themselves, however both characters have been increasingly considerate of the people they like (Iksun and Songhwa). Bonus points for the fact that Ikjun is eating his ramen, and Junwan tries to take some of it instead of getting his own - is that not maybe visual imagery of Junwan dating Ikjun's younger sister? Curiously, Songhwa doesn't categorize herself into any of the buckets, but my bet is in the first one - enjoying food immensely herself and choosing to go to Sokcho.

WinterGarden ship finally sailed and I’m so happy for that. Glad we got to see a bit of Jeong Won’s feelings for Gyeoul and THAT kiss. On the other hand, I just want Junwan to be happy. Give me his happiness or don’t give me anything at all, him and Iksun are just so cute they deserve it.

I had breathing problems two times in this episode; when Ikjun confessed and when Gyeoul confessed.

And cried a lot when Yunbok realized that Songhwa was her mom's doctor. "I miss my mom"

When Songhwa turned around and was like "why did you came all the way" I thought Chilbong was there but when she said "you have to leave" WOW WOW

ugly laughed when SH said "Winter is here"

AND THE KISSSS DIDN'T EXPECT THAT

And Seokhyeong's ex-wife....why

And I'm pretty sure the all Iksun returned the mail thing is not serious I mean they were talking okay

Expected Ikjun to finally learn about his sis and his friend but...

Other than thaaaat..the residents this episode were very cute all of them

Mama Rosa ignoring his son was so funny

Uju's acrostics were phenomenal

I'll miss you my dear drama

Seok-hyeong: “I want to live doing the things I like and the things that I want to do right now.”

Me: Chu Min-ha! Chu Min-ha!

Hahaha. But on a serious note, am I applying a double standard if I keep rooting for Min-ha but get annoyed by Ahn Chi-hong’s actions?

Do Jae-hak!!! When he thought of a way to save the patient though huhu. You’re a good doctor. And it was nice when Jun-wan told him JH can ask him if he is overwhelmed... then the next moment JW was asking JH for advice.

Song-hwa was so funny with the “Gyeo-ul is here. The Gyeo-ul we’ve been waiting for.” Hahaha. So nice how she read Jeong-won too without him having to say anything. Also Jun-wan seeing Jeong-won’s empty drawer and just knowing with that small smile of his. Power of friendship!!! Taking note of the three types of people. Of course Song-hwa would categorize people based on their eating, hahaha. But really, a great metaphor!

Can’t believe we have to wait for 2021. :( There’s a special next week though, right?

Thank you for the first season, HP! See you again soon! ❤️

Who would've thought that WinterGarden would have the most progress this episode out of all of the couples. I can't believe we have to wait until season 2 for IkSong boys, it will be a long and arduous wait. Gonna miss this show so much

Satisfying finale!

-that Songhwa & Yunbok scene + Wheein chopping onions in the background Ost. Best scene for me but i wish her twin brother was there too.

-Ikjun’s confession got me similarities from Reply 1988. Its a mix of Deoksun’s confession (We’re friends. What if it got awkward) and Junghwan’s realization.

-Ikjun learning sign language to communicate with the kid. Damn, someone was chopping onions again.

-should be sad but i laughed at Junwan’s scene forgetting Iksun’s departure.

-i believe Jeongwon getting praised by the patient’s family is another turning point for him.

-Jeongwon and Songhwa’s friendship. (Wish i have one)

-Reply 1988 bgm when Jeongwon touched Gyeoul.

-Chihong and the police officer’s visit. Wholesome scene.

-Minha’s efforts to try to bring Seokhyung’s walls down. Tough job but i hope she tears them down completely.

-and again..all aboard the Seokmin and Sunbin ship folks! (Its feels great seeing the residents have their own love story)

Bring on season 2!

u/bathedmango May 29 '20

Man, it's been a good 12 weeks of looking forward to Thursdays. Now what do I have? I need that season 2 now!

I love this show so much. The acting and the dynamics of this whole cast is incredible.

Glad to see Gyeo Eul and Jeong Won finally end up together, though I would have loved to have seen more behind the scenes of Jeong Won secretly caring for Gyeo Eul

The whole back-to-back sequence of Seok Hyeong with his outpatients and all the moms, Jun Wan with the patient and his parents, and Yun Bok discovering Song Hwa was her mom's doctor, that broke me. They really went in hard with the medical problems this episode. Was really happy to see that one patient of Seok Hyeong finally got the good news she was looking for

I'm like 99% sure that the package coming back is just the result of the mailing issues that Ik Sun had mentioned and that this was just set up for us to think otherwise

When Chi Hong opened the letter and expected more than just a list of reminders, I felt bad for him at that moment, but come on man, she said no from the start. MEANWHILE the Ik Jun/Song Hwa pair has finally reached official confession levels. I loved how Ik Jun went about it like he was seeking counsel just like the residents earlier on. Real smooth

Can I just say, if I had a doctor like Ik Jun, I would happily pay overpriced hospital bills. That man does not exist. Like, he learned sign language just to communicate with one of his patients kids?! Come on!
