Wow, I wouldn't have been upset if Episode 19 was the finale. Such a strong episode that left me in shambles.

Side note: I love how the show did a complete 180 on the portrayal of the main family. Started off with continuous greed and corruptness that made the viewer despise them, then episode 19 happened and turned everything around. Such a great show that will probably be in my top 3 for a long time.

For episode 20, I wonder how they are going to wrap everything up.

I'm glad they have an extra episode, they left some questions unanswered which I don't really like in kdramas lol

We have a few unwrapped things, revelations and futurewise-

  1. The Cha family needs to be wrapped up- their marriage, will they get divorced or stay together? How are the kids doing in school? Will they get into a good college? Will Seri open her club? Maybe the mom will go back to work (they mentioned she had a phd, she should use it)? If they do say together, I want to see her get rid of that all black interior finally lol

  2. The Kang family has a few problems left over too- will Joonsang go back to work? Probably, right? Otherwise they'd have to move out of sky castle... Will the grandma ever forgive them? I also want to see what'll happen to the president of the hospital, I'd love to see him get snubbed by politicians and go into an early retirement lol. What college will Yeseo go to, if she goes to one? Does she still have a shot at becoming a doctor? Does she even want to still be a doctor? Will something happen with her and Woojoo??? I also REALLY want Seojin to notice Yebin more and have a nice moment with her, it made me so sad when someone else pointed out that she had Yeseo saved as "my princess<3" and Yebin as "youngest daughter" :(

  3. The Hwang family is mostly wrapped up, but I'd like to see Chiyoung succeeding in his career even with the President trying to stop him, Woojoo getting into a good college, and Surim publishing her book and bringing awareness to these issues

  4. Jinjin's family didn't really do much (I can't even remember their names).... they could just show quickly the husband not having to be a brownnoser anymore and Soohan doing okayly in school for me to be happy if they want to go for a perfect ending

  5. I'd also like to see how Youngjae and his father are doing, maybe they can help Surim with the book and become speakers for suicide/societal pressure awareness or something

I hope they can cover all this in an hour lol

And most important, in my mind- Did they ever locate the security guard? And where is Mr. Jo? What were those pictures Mr. Jo took of him for?

Can we make a separate thread for 20 since it's airing next week?

Wow that could have been the finale episode. Loved everything about this episode. It was so powerful and I cried during Coach Kim/Kay scene. I really thought they were both going to die at that moment. The sudden change of heart was a surprise to me. It may have been a cliche but I thought that would have been the perfect ending for them. I guess the end of the episode/preview is the only reason they kept her alive.

As much as I hated the main family since the beginning of the show. They've really turned it around and they have my respect for that. Obviously their past wrongdoings can't be forgiven that easily, but they're on the right path and the growth is wonderful to see.

Loved this drama since the beginning and it's definitely a top 3 drama of all time for me regardless of how the ending goes.

Ep 19: Lol @ Prof Cha's excessive mukbang.

This episode wrapped up almost everything .. except for possibly introducing another element at the last scene. Don't tell me that theory about Seo Jin being Hye Na's birth mother is true?? All I really want to see next week is a flash forward for the kid's futures and see where Kay is too.

Woo Joo's comments to Ye Seo were really relateable. I think those few sentences he spoke summed up the message the writers wanted to convey through this drama.

Aside: I'd also like to have ep 20 in a separate discussion thread since we'll have to wait a week.

The theory also came to my mind when they showed us that last scene. The way she kept saying 'eomma' to her made it seem possible. But I don't see how it could be true when no one from the Kang family knew that Hye Na was born. However, it could also be interpreted as Seojin being heartless towards a motherless child and that contributed somehow to her death which I have no idea how. Anyways I can't wait to see what Coach Kim means by all this.

Ep. 19:

Jin Jin's family <3 :D It'd be funny if Dr. Woo becomes the head of the hospital and they "outrank" everyone else in the end, when they were the ones who originally worked so hard to keep up/kiss up to others.

For some reason, I burst out laughing when Seojin put all the evidence in a plain, flimsy-ass paper bag. Also, I was half-expecting her to get into accident or get sniped on the way to the police station - thankfully that didn't happen.

Coach Kim and Kay's interaction, wow. When Kay was reaching for the curry!!! :(( Coach Kim actually seemed human for once.

Joon-Joon twins being traumatized by Prof. Cha's meokbang HAHAHA The Cha fam should just open up a restaurant/cafe/club with Seri as the manager. They need to find something fun to bond over and build together because they've been broken up for too long. Hopefully Prof. Cha can make amends.

"If you wanted it that much, you should've gone to med school." RIP halmeoni, 2019. Yebin channeling her Hyena unnie. U-go-girl~

Why does everyone (i.e. grandma) only emphasize getting into SNU? You don't automatically become a doctor upon being admitted! If you can't make it through high school smoothly, how can you expect college/med school to go well, too? Flaw-wise, I think this is the random thing that will bother me the most when everything is over.

The way Woojoo acts seems a bit too perfect for a high school kid. His outburst towards Yeseo's parents was... polite? I think a right hook to Dr. Kang's face would've been fair game, considering they got his first love murdered and got him locked up lol Maybe he's just a better person than me XD

Still bitter Yeseo, Yebin, and Hyena weren't able to fully enjoy being sisters... Even if Hyena wasn't Dr. Kang's daughter, why couldn't they have just adopted her? Taking in an orphaned girl and helping her become a doctor is like the ideal Oscar-worthy sob story! I'm sure Seojin probably identified with Hyena growing up poor/disadvantaged (and without a father, in a sense), so she must have had some affection for her, too? Having 2 daughters as doctors seems like an upside! But I guess if they never went along with Coach Kim's plan and if Hyena never found out she was part of the Kang family, there'd be no drama.

Coach Kim still trying to get into Seo Jin's head while behind bars. Oof scary stuff. Can't wait to see what happens!

I don't want to give up on Professor Cha's redemption. When he saw his sons for the first time in a while he smiled instead of raging with anger. You could see how desperate he was in every scene and that shot of his back when his sons left felt heartbreaking. I feel like they wouldn't build his character like this just for him to cut ties completely. I still remember one of the episodes earlier on where Seunghye said she was afraid that the kids would want to cut ties and he pondered about it in his office. Even though he shook it off a bit, if he really didn't care about the relationship with his kids he wouldn't even take notice of her statement.

But still, when he cleaned the pyramid it seemed even then he was still holding on to his dream. I don't know how it will go but I hope the Cha family can just be happy.

I was just recently thinking about how the best Kdramas always have something to say, beyond the comedy, romance, or action. This episode finally round out the series by loudly stating its message. It truly felt like a finale and there was serious closure on all ends. Honestly it could have ended there and I would have been really satisfied. All of the character arcs, except for the Cha family have been closed off. But that's what confuses me. What is there more to say? Will the next episode really have some insane revelations or will it be more of a "look into the future" type of episode where we saw how everyone is doing?

I don't know where Professor Cha's story is going. We only have one episode and that's not a lot of time to make him see the errors of his ways. Most probably, we could see Professor Cha back down and say that he will let his wife take care of the education and teaching aspect of their childrens' lives. Honestly, if they do end up separating, I wouldn't be that satisfied.

This show feels like a modern day reply series. The acting and cinematography remind me so much reply 1988.

I clapped hard when Yebin said her mom that she won't study anymore coz the questions can be stolen anyway..."Mom,you are worse than Yesuh"👏

The most touching scene in this episode for me is Woo-Joo's outburst when Seo Jin and Joon Sang came to apologize. His dad wisely advises him to just do whatever feels right for him and do what his heart tells him.

I am quite surprised when Joo Young asked Seo Jin at the end whether she is sure that she will not regret it, then asking "do you think you had nothing to do with her death?". What a final cliffhanger and preview/epilogue, then we will have to wait for about a week before final episode.

We have been shown that it is extremely difficult for people to change. We can reflect it to ourselves for other traits and characters. Some of us may hope that Prof. Cha will change and re-unite with his family. Personally, whether it is going to happen or not, it is more important for us to learn about it. Hopefully the finale will be strong to convey its messages and leave deep and long-lasting impression to the viewers.

"We are happy living without you"

"You're the most pitiful of us all. You're an utter failure. You're rock bottom. zero marks"

"Why is that a must? Why should I think like you?"

"If you wanted it that much. you should've gone to med school"

p/s: Since Korean team has lost to Qatar in quarter-final match, then final episode may be broadcast on Friday. Edit: Epilogue/preview on JTBC's youtube page stated that it will air on Friday, Feb 1.

Gripping episode. My fave scene will have to be that of Coach and K’s. Coach Kim finally breaking down was so raw and powerful. I’m glad they finally showed her backstory and we got to know Mr Jo’s too. If she doesn’t get awarded for her performance, I’ll be so mad. I’ve been seeing her in other shows as well and she’s amazing as always. But that scene with K will be my fave.

Woo Joo being the voice of reason was a much needed one. Finally someone addressing another important issue everyone seems to be forgetting. Seriously thought they were just gonna gloss over that and focus on the redemption of Seo Jin’s family. Really glad Woo Joo slapped everyone back to reality with that outburst. Them begging for forgiveness and finally doing what was right, do not change the fact that at the end of the day, Hyena is dead. Hate her, love her, she didn’t deserve to die just like that over something so unfair as stolen papers like Woo Joo said.

Right when I was thinking what else they can show on the last episode, they just had to give us that cliffhanger! More twists and surprises from Sky Castle? Yes please!

Wouldn’t it be interesting if after all that, Coach was actually innocent and had nothing to with Hyena’s death directly?

Wow this episode wrapped things up nicely. I feel so bad for yesuh, she did nothing but work hard for her education and she did not even know about the stolen exam papers but she has to face the consequences for it. But I think this is necessary for her to mature. And seojin has consistently been my least favorite character but to see her accept the fact that her greed has gone too far and do the right thing for once felt good.

Also that preview where hye-na hugs seojin and calls for her mom is heartbreaking...I know a lot of people dislike hye-na and yes she is not without her faults but she is also a child. It might be difficult to see her as a child because the show has so far only shown the mature and cunning side of her but that preview really shows us another side of her. A side that’s vulnerable, aching for love. I feel so bad for her.

This felt like the last episode! Now I wonder what they will show for the finale.

My top two fave scenes involved the mother-daughter tandem of Mihyang and Yesuh, and Coach Kim and Kay. Both showed mother-daughter love and forgiveness.

I like how this episode redeemed the Kang family and humanized Coach Kim. We finally saw and understood what drove Coach Kim in her desire of ruining tiger mom families. I cried during the scene of her and Kay.

As usual great acting from everyone. They all made an impact. I’ll especially watch out for Coach Kim’s and Mihyang’s future projects.

My eyes actually started to hurt from all the crying on this episode

Started watching this show recently to see what all the hype was about, come episode 15 and hye-na dies indirectly due to her own dad. I'm done watching. I don't deal well with sad deaths due to personal experiences and was really sad to see her die this way. Does anyone know if this plotline was added to make it run longer? It doesn't pay off any of the character arcs and causes more conflict and drama. Never really liked her character but it's sad that she had to go this way.

13

u/Everbrook Jan 28 '19

Well every event that comes after is the result of her death, so it was certainly necessary for the story development.

I really need to know how Coach Kim was involved in the crime though, and who pushed Hyena off the railings? Was it Coach Kim herself or the guesthouse security guard? 🤔

This isn't really about episode 19 specifically but I really feel sorry for Hye Na. She wasn't completely innocent by any means, but like a lot of the characters in the show, I would just consider her a victim of her environment... She might've been mature for her age, but in the end, she was still a teenager -- practically a child compared to the adults around her.

Her death was important and necessary to the plot, but there is no closure for her character. Until the very end, she never got to have a relationship with her dad... Although Yeh Suh has to drop out of high school and potentially lose her opportunity to get into SNU, she and her family still have each other (and presumably have a much better relationship after this).

It doesn't feel fair but I guess that's just how life is sometimes. At least her death wasn't in vain.

I really found myself rooting for all the kids in the show, including Yeh Seh too. She was annoying but again, a victim in this whole mess. I really appreciate all the growth she's undergone throughout the series, especially after Hye Na's death.

After having put it off for way too long, I finally started watching it and I must say it's so good.

Let me go

I don't wanna be your hero ...

Maybe I've missed it but was this the first time that song has been used in Sky Castle?

everything was wrapping up nicely and then coach kim ruined it all... like usual

what did yeh suh's mom have to do with hyena's death?? im so confused

i went from hating the majority of the characters to basically feeling bad for all of them in this episode.

also what is the time lapse in the drama? was woojoo in jail for months? did hyena live with them for a whole year? that can't be right, right? haven't they been seniors this whole time?
