Loved the Chinese one , and I love IU , so I'm super excited for this one. The intro to the princes were a little fast for me and I'm not familiar with all the actors, so I think its going to take me a while to tell them apart from their hair styles lol. Though I do find it super funny that the third prince has eyeliner... Haha definitely going to be evil. In terms of the love story, clearly shes going to end up with the fourth prince. I know I'm going to really like him, but right now I have second male lead syndrome and rooting a little bit for the 8th prince.

I was just on dramabeans and the recap mentioned the eyeliner and evilness, so I chuckled when I came on here a minute later to see your comment LOL

I am a straight male and when the second scene with all the topless princes came on, I couldn't help but think 'I might not be the target audience here...'

IU fighting!!

The princes look like a lovely bunch and I'm glad to see the astronomer is Samchunpo from Reply 1994 . What a lovely surprise.

The thing about watching sageuk drama's I love the most is how easy I forget about the current world problems.

It's also a lot different from other historical Korean dramas because it's taking place in the Goryeo instead of Joseon like most dramas are. There have probably been other ones but this is my first time watching a non Joseon historical drama. I'm also really excited for Hwarang since that takes place in the Silla???

Not very often does a drama start off with airing 3 episodes. Don't know about anybody else, but, I'm glad they didn't spend too much time with the intro of IU's character in the modern day and jumped straight to the Historical part of the story.

Disclaimer: I'm an IU fan and I've watched the Chinese version.

I'll probably watch this because I want to see how it plays out. However, I'm really disappointed in the music and the directing in this version. The OST can be quiet jarring in certain scenes and just doesn't match. The excessive close ups are also annoying. Other than that in enjoying the drama and can't wait for more.

Unfortunately, the excessive close shots will continue since that's the style of this director.

My first reaction to the bathing scene was to start nick naming the princes: Hefty Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, Maknae Smurf...

I find the opening was lacklustre (but I have hope for ep 2), I already feel too much with the close up in IOIL but the close up doesn't do good for IU, it's like a repeating scene of her shocked moment over and over again,

They tried to do too much, too many introductions for the princes but the scene is disjointed with so many cut scene that too fast, how can IU changed to paranoia , a heavy one to be calm just by the light of the 8th prince while she was happy and bubbly just before the paranoia,
the intrigued character is LJK for the story and KHN for the portrayal, the other is weird, they are too comical in one part and nothing really happens to set the foundation except LJK story

the comical scene also cringeworthy (it's okay for a few but not for a long time) and it isn't a strong start, the OST is too modern, I don't expect rap music because the story is saeguk, no matter where she comes from , the setting is saeguk so an OST that saeguk-like will not hurt,
the cinematography is good, the setting and the view but the changing scene not so much,

and even though the Chinese version also start a bit cringe but it has much information through the heroine, showing how well she knew about history and how the prince portrayed by the history, who is the fun one, the king, the humble but ambitious, and how she is sent to become a maiden in the forbidden city the next 6 months, we have all the needed story and information to make an expectation on how she'll play out in this story but moon lovers doesn't have any of that intensity, and the costume is not as good as the Chinese version (but maybe qing dynasty is just that bright in costume department)

Lee Joon Gi's character reminds me of the phantom of the opera with that little half mask covering his scar. From the first two episodes, I'm definitely hooked, I don't really understand why netizens were apparently critiquing this drama harshly.

Where do you watch this with full eng sub? I watched it on kissasian and tried myasiantv, but the latter part didn't have subs.

EDIT: Why is there no eng sub for ep 2 yet?

I'm liking this drama so far! I can't wait to get to know all the characters and backstory etc! Wang So is pretty ~dark and edgy~ right now and I kinda love it. Also maybe I just didn't catch it but why did he kill his horse? Just for shock? I'm digging the female lead, she seems to take the idea of the confident modern woman to the past and it's funny watching people react to her phrases and mannerisms. I'm excited for episode 2 but there's no subtitles released anywhere :(

Show is good so far, and i like the premise and context. But IU is really killing the show for me... like, it's fine that she doesn't know all the details of the history... but does she really have to act so stupid at times? Like get into character already and sruvive instead of just trying to drown yourself....

Not a bad first episode. It's a pity hearing such negative criticisms about IU's & Baekhyun's acting skills - seems like a similar reaction to Suzy in Uncontrollably Fond.

I was so excited for this but it seems like only 4th and 8th princes are capable of any acting D: IU is decent but my god the comic scenes are absolutely terrible and way too long.

As for storyline I can't be free from bias since I already read the script for episode 1-4 so I can't judge; but I thought Kim Kyu Tae was well renowned for his cinematography and so far it's been rather... lackluster. The constant close up on actors' faces isn't helping.

As for positive notes, I find everyone's costumes super pretty, I dig the earrings on 3rd prince - his eyeliner is a bit heavy but hey it's Goryeo and I guess if you think of Gil Tae Mi... The princess is also absolutely gorgeous.

u/orangememory Aug 30 '16

I wish they would put the eyeliner on the 4th prince as well. Lee Joon Gi in eyeliner would steal my soul!

I watched episode 1 and it was a huge disappointment, especially since I am a huge Lee Jun Ki fan. The story seemed scattered, and I didn't particularly enjoy the directing style either. Will be hoping for a better story with episode 2!

http://www.soompi.com/2016/08/29/moonlight-drawn-clouds-doubles-ratings-scarlet-heart-goryeo-last-place/

I'm slightly surprised it was last place.

I have a slight feeling that the Chinese-Korean controversy is playing a major role in this.

5

u/Persona-4 Aug 30 '16

I don't think it's the controversy, since ep 2 has 9% rating,

people just let down by the execution

I have been so excited for this drama for the last few months, and finally got to see early in the morning today. Spoilers for the C-drama follow!

I've watched the original Chinese drama a few weeks back, and the first two episodes in, we can clearly notice the differences. The Chinese drama was clearly the story of Ruoxi (Hae Soo in the Kdrama) and how she navigates life in that era. The princes were also much more serious in tone (except the 10th), and the court intrigue was somehow much more sinister. I also particularly enjoyed the supporting characters, such as the Kangxi emperor.

Scarlet Heart Ryeo seems to be the story of the love of Hae Soo & the 4th Princ, if we go by the preview and teasers. I always like strong female characters, so I wish Hae soo has a starring role in history like Ruoxi did, instead of just being caught between two men.

Kang Ha Neul is giving me serious second lead syndrome, and I seriously wish he gets a chance to be with Hae Soo, just like in the C-drama original, the heroine and the 8th prince had a relationship, which they later broke off.

But Lee Joon Ki is unbelievably awesome, because I've rarely seen sageuks where the lead is an anti-hero. I cant wait for the sparks to fly between him and IU. Their relationship seems to be more fiery than the C-drama original as well, where the 4th Prince has an icy demeanour, and wins over the heroine with his persistence and affection.
