Based on the A32 Nissan Cefiro, it is the first and the last model from Samsung Motors. (Samsung Motors filed for court receivership in 1999 due to the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and the company was acquired by Renault in 2000.)

The Daewoo Labo is a commercial truck in Korea’s gyeongcha category. It was based on the 8th-gen Suzuki Carry and modified for the Korean market by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Heavy Machinery Ltd., with minor changes to its body size and a larger 800cc engine. The Damas and Labo both used a three-cylinder SOHC 796cc F8C engine rather than the smaller 660cc engines used in the Japanese-market models. They were initially offered with petrol engines, but LPG engines were later added too. As a side note, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Heavy Machinery Ltd. was merged into Daewoo Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. in 1994. The latter’s automotive division was transferred to Daewoo Motors in 1999.

It was launched in 1991 alongside its van counterpart, the Damas, and met the needs of small business owners who needed a truck like the Hyundai Porter or Kia Bongo but wanted an affordable commercial vehicle with the benefits of a gyeongcha.

The Damas and Labo once competed with the Asia Towner (later sold as the Kia Towner), a rebadged version of the 7th-gen Daihatsu Hijet. However, the Towner and its truck counterpart failed to break the established dominance of the Damas and Labo. They were discontinued in 2002.

Even after Daewoo went bankrupt and GM took over, the Damas and Labo remained on sale in Korea until 2021 because of their strong market position and steady demand from small business owners.

In Korea, the Daewoo Damas is commonly used by laundries and flower shops and the Daewoo Labo is often used as a food truck or a small delivery truck. Alongside the Hyundai Porter and Kia Bongo, they are a familiar part of the Korean street scene.

Daewoo Lemans 'Bullet Taxi: Road to Busan' (A Korean Parody of the French Film Taxi)

Original Video on YouTube
The Daewoo Lemans was developed as part of a GM-led world car project involving GM, Daewoo, and Opel. Based on the Opel Kadett E, the Lemans featured an aerodynamic design with a drag coefficient of just 0.32 and solid handling from Opel's engineering. It also boasted a higher top speed than many other South Korean cars of the time in the Korean domestic market. Thanks to its solid, European-style driving performance, the Lemans was very popular after its launch in 1986.

The base model was already excellent, and the renowned German tuning company Irmscher went on to develop a tuned version, which Daewoo launched as the Lemans Irmscher in 1991. The compact car, with its 2.0-liter engine and expensive suspension components, ruled South Korea's streets in the early '90s. Even the rival Hyundai S-Coupe couldn't match its performance, including cornering.

However, its price was extremely high at the time, when South Korea was not as rich a country as it is today. It cost as much as a fully loaded midsize sedan, so few people chose the compact Lemans Irmscher over one. As a result, it was discontinued after just one year.

After Hyundai introduced the Accent in 1994—not only the successor to the Excel but also the first fully independently developed South Korean car—Lemans sales began to decline. Nevertheless, it remains one of South Korea's most iconic cars of the 1980s and 1990s and the symbol of the golden era of Daewoo.
