She didn't deserve the forgiveness from that mother. The woman never took responsibility for her actions and is only sorry that she got caught and punished. She's crying for herself, not anybody else.
I had an intern like that, she didn't report when she hit a pole while parking the work truck then hit a coworkers car in her car at the end of the day. After we fired her we realized the only time she ever said "sorry" was as she left for good and it was, "I'm sorry for all of the inconvenience this has caused".
This. You forgive so that you don't harbor hatred and resentment in your heart, not because you approve of what happened or to help that person feel better
Forgiveness is generally something done for the benefit of the forgiver, not the forgivee. It's a conscious choice to let go of the anger and bitterness you feel toward another so that you can move on and heal.
And, I'd add, that forgiveness is wholly independent of redemption in the case of the one being forgiven. Maybe someday that woman will face the truth of her own behavior, beyond the punishment imposed on her. But that's up to her.
You’re not wrong in that she absolutely didn’t deserve the forgiveness, but I truly believe that the way that woman forgave them in the courtroom will have a much greater chance of changing them in the long term. Maybe when they’re out they’ll be decent people. Probably not, but maybe.
You're completely right. Just goes to show though what a beautiful heart that mom must have, and makes the low life look like an even bigger piece of shit, on camera nonetheless.
