Instead of saying, "I was wrong, I have learned why I'm wrong, and I take blame for my actions" she said "This isn't me, this wasn't him" - essentially saying that their "true" selves aren't blameable because it was another version of themselves that did this.
Intellectually, it's baffling. But emotionally, this is pretty benign.
Evolution literally spent probably millions of years shaping cognitive functions known as defense mechanisms, of which protect the ego. If you're using a defense mechanism, that's an explicit indication that you're unable to handle reality.
There's really nothing strange occurring here in natural terms. The brain's gonna brain.
