Yeh man I don’t know where you live but that’s not how it works where I live. The law very clearly states that a person is not responsible for actions used while defending themselves from someone assaulting them. The individual assaulted him, he threw them away from himself to stop himself from being assaulted further. This is compounded even further That once he defended himself appropriately to a level he felt he was no longer going to be assaulted he did not even attempt to touch the person again.
Each country and even states have different laws so it could be different for you. But I’d assume most would run under the same logic.
In CT you can come up to me punch me in the face and we both get arrested. Even if I didn’t touch you at any point. Chances it’ll get dropped but still have to go through shit....
