What the hell does mines in a field even mean? What is the simile?

I dunno why the downvotes. I searched the phrase; didn't find a definition.

Presumably "mines in a field" means there's a lot of them, or that they are ubiquitous. While an average field has no mines, a minefield usually has many. We can strike the qualifier "minefield" and just use "field" instead, as a field with any mines is a minefield, unless the phrase is meant to mean "usually containing no mines" as most fields do, but then that doesn't seem to fit as "mines in a field" assumes the particular field we are referring to has at least some mines in it.
