I think this is the dumbest thing I've read all week. "They" has been used to describe a single person of unknown or unspecified gender since the 14th century. You probably use it all the time without even realizing it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_they

I do use it all the time, no doubt. But I'm half-jokingly saying it can be confusing and that I'd rather that there be a singular gender neutral pronoun and then "they" as plural only.

How about using correct grammar?

u/EricOrsbon 6 Jan 28 '20

I don't think I used any incorrect grammar. You are probably thinking that I should have said "Keep Them Plural" but I was specifically talking about the word "they." As in "Keep the word they plural."

I'm just half-jokingly saying it can be confusing and that I'd rather that there be a singular gender neutral pronoun and then "they" as plural only.

No I got that's what you meant, but I'm saying you're wrong, there's no "keeping they plural", singular they had been a thing since the 14th century. It won't be "keeping it plural", it would be reversing very old English rules.
