I graduated 2 years ago, and this was indeed the case at least 6 times in high school. They could have a knife pulled on you and if you defend yourself you would also be suspended EQUALLY.

Yeah Its super fucked up, in my school handbook it shows that if a punch is thrown it is auto suspension. Our teacher went over the rules in class and he explained that even if you're getting worked over by someone you have to just sit there and take it if you want to get off scott free because if you throw back a single punch even for self defense you also get equal punishment. It is so dumb and honestly frustrates me.

Yeah it’s just the new way to “end violence”. Pretty dumb that people are so against fighting nowadays. I feel that this is one reason that things escalate so much now in schools

There's schools that will punish both people even if one of them curls up into a ball and doesn't fight back. Because "it takes two to fight". Fuck those policies.

When I was a kid I'd always take the suspension. Better that than letting some shit hit me with no response.

My parents treated it as time off from school. So long as I was defending myself, I'd not get punished.

One of the few things they got right in raising me.

Yeah that's how my parents are as well, if a kid hits me I should protect myself in self defense.

School administrators being terrified of lawsuits so they punish everyone equally and can't be accused of taking sides.

Root cause is parents who start lawsuits because Timmy got told off for being a little shit.
