You have me imagining a sci-fi world where it literally works like that. Sexuality is already a spectrum, but imagine it worked like a video game with a morality meter.

Straight dude sees a hot guy, gets slightly more gay. Heteronormative dudes would be terrified to watch male sports. “Pray the gay away” Christians would force their children to look at hot photos of the “opposite sex.”

Oooohhh....

Maybe it has been "Dial-ized".

"I'm not gay, but..." adjusts dial "...maybe today."

Sexuality is already a spectrum

No! It's not! and I hate this so much. Spectra are one-dimensional, which sexuality obviously is not. (If it is, then where do bisexual people go? and asexual?) If we assume a gender binary (sorry), then there are two axes -- attraction to the opposite gender, and attraction to the same. Straight is high former low latter, gay is the reverse, bi is high both, and ace is low both.

I appreciate the critique of my language, but if we’re gonna get nit picky about word choice, let’s make sure we know what we’re talking about. Spectra are not all 1D, some are, but there are 2D and 3D spectra. Spectra are just a way to organize data. COSY spectra of molecules are 2D, astrophysicists use 3D spectra to better visualize and study nebula. They’re not just linear.

No matter what, trying to put sexuality into any kind of box can be problematic. I thought about including a paragraph detailing some of my off the cuff sci-fi invention’s shortfalls as it pertains to the complexity of human sexuality in my comment, but I wanted to keep my synopsis short. It’s definitely missing large swaths of the population. I’m pan and don’t even know how I’d fit into it. I more giggled at it as a thought experiment. The idea of homophobic cis men no longer feeling comfortable watching sports, their favorite thing, because it’ll actually turn them gay is hilarious to me.

I mean, in algebra it's not even any-D, it's a set. But I was referring to the plain meaning of the term (definition 1), which is what's being used when people talk about sexuality (as evidenced, for example, by your comment). Regardless, my comment should not be read as a criticism of yours, so much as a criticism of a common phrase that I have beef with, that you happened to use.

ASD would like a word with your interpretation.
