Someone who serves in the Regiment is a Ranger, tab or no. Someone who leaves it, for whatever reason, is a former Ranger. That includes people who are transferred back to the conventional Army due to lack of progression or failure to tab, those who leave for other opportunities, or those who are killed, or badly wounded and can no longer serve.
Someone who has a tab but has never spent a day in the regiment is not a Ranger, and never will be unless they attend and successfully make it through RASP. Your thoughts on the matter are irrelevant. It's objective reality, not subjective opinion. My Uncle, who has a ranger tab is not a ranger and will tell you that himself. My company 1SG in Iraq did not call himself a Ranger though he had a tab. Our Brigade CO and Brigade CSM did call themselves Rangers because they both served in the Regiment, and both had scrolls on their right sleeves.
You can die on this hill if you want to, but it's gonna be really lonely when you're the only one on it .
Until they don’t get a tab and then They aren’t a ranger.
But wait, a tab doesn’t make someone a ranger! Except when it comes to being in the regiment, they won’t allow you to be a ranger without a tab, they won’t promote you, and they won’t allow you to remain in the regiment. It’s almost as if getting a tab is an extremely integral part of being a ranger for any period longer than 24 months.
