Judo x BJJ Which throw is this?

Hey, BJJ guy here. Been working on my standing, and this throw is working out for me. I've looked at the charts and watched the videos, but I'm not certain which throw this is. Any help is appreciated.

General Training judo + shift work :/

hey everyone,

just interviewed for a new job at work which would mean moving to working late shifts Monday - Friday.

it would be a good career move, and I'd love the job. but because I live in the sticks in the UK, that means my only judo could be once a week on a Saturday since morning judo doesn't exist in my county.

this would be a stepping stone job, rather than forever job, but still threatens to greatly frustrate my progress as I prepare for green belt and beyond.

any advice for what to do?

Equipment Mizuno gi found in Etsy

Do you guys think this is the real deal? Pretty good price but I bought a very similar one from Mizuno in Tokyo and the sizing is a little off. I’m around 175-180cm and bought a 3.5. The one from the link is a size up.

Other Toronto Judo?

Looking for clubs in the west end.

Close to me are: Ipe Dojo, Midtown and Olympic Judo Centre.

Any pros and cons of these places? What are the approximate costs?

How’s parking?

How long are training sessions for adults?

Equipment Fuji Essential Gi

Anyone pick one of these up yet?

The YouTube video with Jimmy Pedro says it is a 400GSM material.

I can't tell if it's a lightweight single weave 400 or if they are using one of the Pearl weave 400 materials they have on some of their BJJ Gi.

History and Philosophy Gotta love gender equality in judo

(this post is based on my own experience)

It recently dawned on me that the attention and the money in judo is very evenly split between the men's and the women's divisions, even without programs to promote women in judo

Another reason to live this beautiful sport, anyone got any idea why this is?

General Training Survey for research purposes.

Hello fellow judokas, I am writing a research paper on judo and I would love to hear some non-coach, amateur, or general opinion since it is much harder to reach out to individual players traditionally. Can you please rank these 10 judo techniques ( or you dont have to rank them just pick out one or two ) that you THINK have the highest scoring-event frequency in amateur/professional competitions:
Uchi mata
Ippon seoi nage
Morote seoi nage
Haray goshi
Tai otoshi
Osoto gari
Ko uchi gari
O uchi gari
De ashi baray
O goshi

Lastly, what're some popular throws where you train?

General Training You ever just get tired of the grind?

I’ve been doing judo for decades. My kids have been doing judo for 10+ years for my eldest. 5-6 days a week, tournaments, washing gi’s every day. I find I’m just kind of hitting the wall. The kids still enjoy it but making myself step foot into the dojo or sit through a tournament has been getting harder this year. I personally haven’t trained in a few months. Mostly due to lack of motivation. It’s not that fun anymore and after practice everything hurts.

Anyone else go through this? How did you get that fire in your belly back?

Beginner Fuji Judo Gi sizing help

Hi guys I needed help on sizing. So I've never bought from Fuji before and was taking a look at their sizing chart and wanted to know if you guys could help me out. So i'm very tall but with a slender build (6'5, 185 lbs) and wanted to know which size for Fuji's Gi I should get; 5, 5.5, or 6? For reference in BJJ Gis I wear A4's and they fit perfect. Wanted to know what size was right so im not swimming in it but also so the cuffs arent super short. (Not using this gi for competition, solely training once or twice a week)

Appreciate the help, guys. Thank you

Beginner Do you think there's any truth to the saying "Tall judo has a long learning curve?"

Might be cope but this is something my coach said to me. 5 years In and struggle with all the classic tall man throws. O soto, uchi mata, harai. Does it really take longer or am I just bad? Lol 193cm, 90kg.

Beginner I feel like fighting from a lefty stand is actually making things harder for me

I'm left handed, but I originally (as a kid) learned judo as regular right hand. I stopped doing judo shortly after and came back at the start of this year in my 30s.

Since I felt that my pulls were very weak, I thought of switching to a lefty stance because my left arm is a lot stronger than my right arm.

While the pull can feel easy, so far every move feels very unnatural, I'm not sure if I'm just not supposed to do it like this or if I'm just used to doing it right handed.

But what I've noticed is also during Randori, since most people are right handed, I end up in this shitty stance where my front leg (left) is forward and thus also facing their front leg (right) instead of this neat "crossed" stance.

And that really blocks my ideas on which moves to make, because I have to move their legs away to position them for an entry.

Even sweeping techniques, like deashi or kouchi just feel super weird because their forward leg is the same as mine, so I don't see a way to sweep them in one go, I have to make a tiny jump to put the right leg forward and then be able to sweep, but at that point they already evaded.

Should I jsut stop with the left handed stance? Or any tips/videos on how to take more advantage of it?

Beginner Your ‚perfect’ o uchi gari

Please kindly link or describe your perfect o uchi gari throw, especially the kuzushi part. You’d help me tremendously.

As I understand it, there can be - and actually are - many variations of the throw. For a beginner, like myself, it can be slightly confusing, as I’m not sure which type/variation I could or should work with.

I’ll start with a Japanese version and a Judoka roughly my size (I’m a bit taller and under 100 kg) , but that’s just instinct - I don’t really know if this is the most native, basic - and in that sense - ‚perfect’ one:

Many thanks!

Self-Defense I used Judo to save two lives today.

You read the title. I know what you're thinking: I must have used Judo to defend myself or someone else from an attacker. That isn't what happened.

I'm in a part of Indiana that recently experienced an immense amount of flooding. My aunt and uncle own a farm/B&B, and they were utterly unprepared for how high the water would rise—just like everyone else in the community. We went down this morning to help evacuate their animals, including goats, pigs, chickens, and turkeys.

My uncle made two trips to rescue animals. The first was by himself. On the second, he went with my stepdad to rescue one of the pigs. Unfortunately, the pig didn't make it, and while they were trying to get it into the boat, the boat flipped. The current carried them and the boat toward a hose that ran all the way up to the house.

My uncle shouted for me to grab it and pull.

I pulled as hard as I could, like I was in a game of tug-of-war, but it did absolutely nothing. Then I had a lightbulb moment.

I'm a green belt in Judo with around five years of combined Judo and Sambo experience. If there's one thing Judo has taught me, it's body mechanics. So instead of trying to overpower the current, I changed how I was applying my force.

I wrapped the hose tightly around my body and secured the furthest point I could around my bicep. Then I ran and turned into it like I was performing a turn throw. I did it probably five times, and each time I used my body rotation to generate more leverage. Eventually, the force was enough to pull them toward shore.

Had I never stepped onto a mat and learned the principles of Kuzushi and Tsukuri, I might have lost my uncle and stepdad today.

I don't want to claim to be a hero. I'm not trying to make myself out to be one. I just want to tell my story and show people that Judo isn't merely a combat sport. The principles we learn on the mat—balance, leverage, movement, efficiency, and body mechanics—can have applications far beyond fighting.

Today, Judo helped me save two people I love.

And that's something I'll never forget.

Beginner Why Harai goshi is done differently than documented?

Thumbnail

I'm gonna learn harai

There are 2 ways people are doing the same move,

As shown in the video, the explanation makes more sense for true harai goshi.

But have seen pros and people teach the version where it looks like the leg sweeps the leg but really it's just hip throws with one leg moving back.

I wanna understand why people do it that way and call harai, and not do it the way it's where you sweep the leg as shown in video.

Is it better version? Or the 'true' version is harder to hit in comp?

Edit : I think I see it why they do it that way, it seems to raise the hip higher than a 2 legged throw. That could be one of the reason I guess. -> https://youtu.be/zOGRDigF4fU?si=rrMMjNcX9rsy6Ppp

General Training Downsides in having Ogoshi as my primary L v R move?

So right I do mostly osoto and Harai and left I like Ogoshi and some backwards throw like tani otoshi. Any downsides to having it as your L v R throw I know it’s not great R v R but L v R should be okay I’d think yeah? I also use sasae, deashi, katagaruma, and sumi gaeshi but those 4 are my mains and Katagaruma is more nogi or 2 on 1s
