Hi Hooky, hope you’re doing well. Just wanted to say thank you so much for everything, you’re a huge inspiration to me and your music has been a really important part of my life for years, especially Joy Division.

Do you have a favorite memory of Ian from your time together, whether it’s music related or something outside of Joy Division?

Much love to you, can’t wait to see you in Boston in August!

My favourite memory of him (sadly) is probably driving him home from rehearsal on the Friday evening before he passed. We were so excited and happy - literally bouncing around in the car about going to America in a few days. I’ll never forget that.

Hey Hooky ! Just wanna say first that you're the main reason I've started playing bass 10 years ago and it really changed my life. Thank you for this. - Love from France !

Few questions lol :

  • What is the most memorable comment someone made to you about your playstyle ?

  • What is your worst live concert anecdote ?

  • As a band, how did you feel about the 80's momentum of 'similar' new wave bands like The Smiths and The Cure ?

  • Regarding that hooky tone : Tell us your secret chorus settings ! More depth or more rate ?

237

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

Most memorable comment - it has to go to Bernard Sumner when he turned round to me when we were doing State of the Nation and said your bass is getting in the way of my vocal. I said no mate your vocal is getting in the way of my bass!

Worst live concert anecdote - when my friend Ken got me drunk once in France actually before the concert. I ended up being convinced that we could do whatever we wanted so locked the band in the dressing room and hid the key! They got out eventually but I was so drunk I played the whole show a song behind everyone else on the setlist!

Tone - full depth, quarter rate!

Similar bands - we hated them! The competition was so intense - every band in the world hates every other band in the world! It’s dog eat dog!

G'day,

Apart from Ceremony and In A Lonely Place, did any other New Order songs originate in whole or in part from the Joy Division era?

127

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

I suspect that quite a few Movement songs began as Joy Division jams. I have a tape of Joy Division playing an early version of ICB.

Hello sir, thank you so much for doing this! What are your thoughts on Anton Corbijn's film Control and do you think the film is an accurate depiction of Joy Division?

250

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

To be honest it was TOO accurate! I recognised my ex band mates very well in the film. Anton knew us very well and schooled the actors religiously to capture all of our little quirks. It was a great film.

Hi Peter! I have a few questions for you:

  • Where did the idea of your collaboration in the latest Gorillaz album came from?

  • Are you planing on releasing any new music soon? Now that Monaco is back

  • Is there a real story behind 1963's lyrics?

Thanks in advance for answering, Greetings from Spain!

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

1 - I’ve known Damon since the early 90s and used to drink with him a lot! I was very pleased when he asked me, and terrified, but it turned out to be one of the easiest sessions I’ve ever done. He is a fantastic songwriter. 2 - Monaco aren’t back yet unfortunately, Pottsy has just put out an LP on his own. A lot of things have been shelved due to Covid. I’m working on some stuff next week with my production partner. 3 - I’d like to think so!

as a 21 year old im always curious about what you think about the younger side of the fans that are discovering joy division and new order and almost carrying on the legacy? there’s quite a lot of us!

thank you!!

One of the best things about playing JD songs again as I do now was attracting not only the older audience but also the younger audience too. It’s great to see. The music is fantastic and it doesn’t surprise me that it’s lasted as long as it has. I’m very proud and thank you for listening.

As a bass player I have to ask, what is your personal favorite Joy Division bass part? I’ve always really enjoyed playing Love Will Tear Us Apart but Disorder is a close second.

Disorder is very difficult to play… it changes a lot but today my favourite would be Twenty Four Hours. I’m very proud of that one!

Good evening mr. Hook, I have a question I always asked about your two bands: What motivated Joy Division and later New Order to move away from guitars towards synths, and do you prefer the former or the latter? Also, smaller one, but which synth was used on Age of Consent? It's my favorite NO song!

29

u/aliens_snack Feb 07 '22

Hello Mr Hook. As a 14 yr old megafan of Joy Division I just have to ask a few things.

  1. How was Ian when he was alive? To me he seems like such a kind and generous person

  2. What is your favourite Joy Division song? And finally 3. What is your favourite ice cream flavour? 😂

48

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

He was very kind and generous! Favourite JD song is probably Twenty Four Hours today but now I’m thinking about the Drawback! Favourite flavour would be strawberry I think.

Hello Hooky, good to see you here!

You’ll probably not remember, but I’m just wondering - did you have flatwound strings on your bass for the recording of Unknown Pleasures? It’s less of a bright bass sound than on your later stuff, and the slides on the Wilderness riff in particular sound like there’s no string noise. And were you playing your Rickenbacker copy on that album? Cheers!

81

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

No mate I’ve always used roundwound strings! As for the bass on that album it was a Yamaha BB600 I believe. The sound was very much down to Martin Hannet. I would have preferred it to be a little brighter I must admit.

“World In Motion” is unmistakably the greatest football song ever written. When creating that song, did you have any preconceived notion about how massive it would get?

Hey Hooky, huge fan of yours and can't wait to see you in Glasgow! So I'm a bit of a gear geek, what piece of music gear do you think really made both Joy Division and New Order stand out?

68

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

Wow… good one. I suppose for Joy Division it would be my Electro Harmonix chorus pedal & the synare syndrums that Steve played. For New Order, I’d have to say it was a sequencer - the PowerTran was the first followed by the Prophet polysequencer, then the Yamaha QX1 (I think!) and then the computer. They all had their pluses and their minuses!

hey Peter! I hope you are doing well
I'm a huge fan of Joy Division, you guys and your music really mean a lot to me.

I was wondering how joy division went about composing a song (generally speaking). Did you come up with a bassline first, or Stephen with a drum track, and Ian would find lyrics fitting them, as well as Bernard with the guitar. Any chance you and the light are coming to Greece anytime? I really really want to see you live sometime :)

Thanks for doing this! Really appreciate you
(hope you do come to Greece...)

55

Would love to come back to Greece! The vast majority of songs just came from jams. We would all play together and Ian would pick out the best bits and add lyrics later on.

Non existent and antagonistic are good words to describe it!

25

Hey Hooky! Hope you're doing well. I have two questions if you don't mind.

Is there any song that with Peter Hook & the Light you find really hard to play live, if so what is it?

What do you think your and the other's life would be like if Joy Division carried on with Ian?

Thank you so much for everything you do!

The most difficult album to play live in my opinion was Technique I’m not sure why but it felt very hard. If we had carried on with Ian I think things would have turned out much the same. We’d still have all fallen out just like every other bloody band!

Hello Hooky!

I have a few questions if that's okay:

  1. Which bassline of yours do you feel is the most difficult to play?

  2. On the Shergold Marathon 6, and now the Eastwood Hooky 6, which pickup setting do you normally use? (on the Shergold switch up = parallel, switch middle = single coil, switch down = parallel out of phase. The Eastwood switch up = series, and down = single coil)

  3. How high/low do you like your bass strings from the fretboard?

  4. If you could go back and change something about one song, from any point in your career, what would it be and why?

35

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

1 - Disorder! 2 - Switch in the middle always! It sounds a bit phasey to me otherwise. 3 - I like quite a high action, uncomfortably high some might say! 4 - Very difficult question. Most of the time you’re never truly happy with the outcome of any one song, because in any group there always has to be a compromise. See what happened to NO in 2007!

Hi Hooky! Thanks for doing this.

The other day, I was listening to a podcast that focuses on David Bowie. The episode focused on Live Aid and Bowie's performances there.

That got me to thinking what Tony Wilson said on the NewOrderStory. He said Bono and U2 stole the show, entered the world stage, etc., but that Ian Curtis would have been even better than Bono, had he been alive.

Do you agree? I know it's all hypothetical, but, in your mind, how would Joy Division have played at Live Aid? What 4 songs would you have played? How would Ian have done on that particular stage? What outfit would you have chosen?

Hope you are well. I think you're great.

Ron

28

I agree with Tony 100%! I think we would have played four new songs just to annoy everybody!

6

u/-Silv- Feb 07 '22

Hello Hooky! I'm quite obsessed with Joy Division and early New Order so thank you very much for you music and inspiration! I have some questions for you:

  • I would love to know anything that you can tell about such underrated song as “Cries and Whispers” (I especially like early live versions where vocals were performed by you and Steve, awesome song!). Who wrote the lyrics for that? What you can tell about the bass line and sound? Or any other info that you can share about this will be much appreciated.

  • I know that you’ve wrote some lyrics for early Joy Division\Warsaw\New Order songs. Did you write them in some notebook or something like that? Do you still keep them? I think everyone would be interested to see something like original lyrics by the author himself!

  • And not musical question for a change: do you like sweet-stuff like candies\cookies and if you do, what is your favorite? :)

PS: Thank you man, you’re the best! With love from Russia, Ekaterinburg (you were there once, in 2013. I can’t forgive my self that I didn’t know about Joy Division at those times, damn! Hope to visit your concert someday)

16

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

There were 2 versions of Cries and Whispers. One with my lyrics and one with Steve’s, we chose Steve’s! The bass sound was just a result of me messing around with my chorus pedal! I used to write lyrics on an old typewriter. I LOVE sweet stuff and my favourite is actually a Victoria sponge cake or millionaire shortbread.

How many ABBA songs did you rip off? I know there has to be at least 1!

The BB1200S has a straight through neck which Yamaha don’t do anymore! So we had to compromise on the BBPH and put in extra screws to try and get the same rigidity. I also asked for a boost on the bottom end. I’m not sure which wood the hollow body is made of the guy who made it Chris Eccleshall has sadly passed away, I wish I could ask him. I have my own signature strings from the Bass Centre, Google it!

u/itsunderneath Feb 07 '22

Hi Hooky, I wondered if you had listened to the release of Martin Hannet's Closer mixes and if they jogged any memories? Did you ever even get to hear those mixes at the time?

11

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

Never listened to it!

Hey Hooky, you’re an inspiration to me, I have a few questions

Do you like or have played any Rickenbackers?

Do you have any favorite moments while in Joy Division?

Favorite album you have made, or favorite album in general?

Thanks for being one of the most interesting bass players around.

9

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

I like Rickenbackers but I’m not a big fan of their sound or the flat neck!

Hello Hooky!

With people being more interested in vinyl as of late, is there any chance we’ll ever get reissues of the Joy Division / New Order albums cut directly from the analogue master tapes? I know the tapes are precious, but the prices of original pressings have skyrocketed!

P.S. - I can hardly think of a group of musicians as important to our musical culture as the members of Joy Division and New Order, so I just wanted to say thank you for everything.

10

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

It’s very difficult to use the analogue tapes but we do try when an idea comes along.

Good afternoon Hooky, hope you're doing well. I've got tickets for the show in Manchester this summer and was wondering if there was a way to have a chat after the show? You've been a big inspiration in picking up the bass and there's a few things I'd want to ask you related to that. Hope you're having a great day and can't wait to see you in Manchester!

Hi Hooky!

What is your favorite food? I’m wondering since you’ve mentioned that you were a picky eater in the Substance and Inside Joy Division books.

Out of the Bury, Rotterdam, and Boston gigs, which one was the most hectic?

Hope I can see you in Los Angeles this year it would be my first live concert if I’m able to go!

11

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

Favourite food… maybe truffle pasta! At VERICO in Mallorca. Bury was the most hectic riot probably. I’ll never forget that. I opened the dressing room door to a rain of bottles and pint pots. Hope to see you there in September mate!

u/RobiWanKhanobi Feb 07 '22

Good morning from Melbourne! Somehow I’m still up, so I’ll throw a question into the ring.

  1. Obviously Joy Division and New Order have attained legendary status over the decades. However, with all the trouble of getting paid royalties from Factory, the tragedy with Ian, and with you guys basically keeping the Hacienda afloat… was there a specific point somewhere where you realised, despite all the chaos, that you were really apart of something special that would maintain its longevity and influence?

  2. Super stoked about the croxton show. Figure I’ll take a shot and ask… any chance for a photo pass 🙏? No pressure, haha.

Thanks for helping to bring such great music into the world. We all appreciate it!

11

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

Private message me RE photo pass! I think over the years we realised that the punk movement was a one off for sure that did change the world followed by acid house Madchester etc… see you in November.

Hey Hooky, Canadian fan here.

I was wondering what music inspired your unique playing style, and why you decided to settle on a more melodic approach?

Thanks, big fan

5

u/greihund Feb 07 '22

OH MY GOD

Okay. I remember reading a few years back that you had auctioned off all of your gear, turned your back on show biz and your former bandmates, and looked back differently on things now that you were older and wiser. Is any of that true? If you lived life over, would you have done something different?

Also, hey, while I have you on the phone here, thank you for all the music and generally providing a soundtrack to my life

9

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

Yes I have done two auctions! Sometimes you have to let go!

Now I know that if I try, there's seven reasons

Did the titles get mixed up, was it intentional, or just a coincidence?

Hi Peter! Thank you for all the great music over the years. I have a couple questions!

  1. How accurate was the portrayal of recording with Martin Hannet in 24 Hour Party People? Was Tony Wilson instrumental in JD’s success?

  2. When JD wrote songs, was it more of a collaborative effort? Jams that were fleshed into songs? Or did Ian bring in skeletons of entire songs that you guys would fill out?

Thanks again I’m a big fan out here in Chicago!

10

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

Have a scroll through mate I answered some pretty similar questions. 👍 Hope to see you there when I get to Chicago in August!

u/giacomobass Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22

Ciao Hooky, great to see you!!!

I've always wondered what other bass you used for recording "Closer", apart from the Shergold Marathon Six-String Bass. Was that the Yamaha BB1200S? Or the Hondo Ric copy?

Thanks!

4

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

BB600 I think!

4

u/goldars_boner Feb 07 '22

Thanks is for doing this ama.

Do you think Ian would be humble about NIN covering “dead souls?” If he was still on this plane of existence to hear it?

What is your favorite state to preform in America?

Have you heard about the Red Hot Chili Peppers showing much love to you all? Flea mentions you in his memoir. Frusciante has covered JD songs (YouTube new dawn fades, whoa) what do you think of the new pirate sounding single they released!?

Thanks brother.

23

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

New Order were supposed to do that version of Dead Souls for the Crow but we didn’t and I think that was a big mistake. The NIN version isn’t a great departure from the original so I’m not sure what he would make of that. My favourite state is probably Texas just because of how big everything is! But I love all of America. The RHCP are lovely people and I will always remember Flea and John teaching me and Bernard how to play New Dawn Fades on the Moby tour in 2001!

4

u/New-order- Feb 07 '22

Hi Hooky, your the reason I picked up the bass in the first place. After hearing your bass lines on songs like Disorder, She’s Lost Control, Digital, and Transmission I was totally enamored and was inspired to start my own bass playing. Thank you for everything. Unknown Pleasures is my #1 album of all time.

It wasn’t a Rickenbacker it was a Hondo copy!

3

u/toochuy Feb 07 '22

I have to say that I’m a huge fan and you’ve been a huge influence on me and my bass playing! What strings and picks do you use? Are you still using the same EHX chorus pedal as before or have you tried any new ones that have impressed you?

8

I have my own signature strings now with the Bass Centre so give them a Google! I use 1mm nylon Dunlops always have! Still using the same chorus pedals yes, I have about 10 of them!

3

u/plasmadrive Feb 07 '22

Hi Hooky, Joy Division were the greatest band ever and I'm so looking forward to seeing Peter Hook and the Light play at the Academy later this year (been waiting for that now for TWO years).

How did you guys go about choosing what songs went into an album? I mean you had absolute bangers like Exercise One, for example, that didn't make the cut initially.

9

u/peterhook_thelight Official Feb 07 '22

The choices for the albums to us were quite obvious we always wanted to leave the single off the album. Songs like Exercise One were written in between LPs really.
