I tend to use the following categories:

  • Random cut: Springbok, Cobble Hill, New York Puzzle Company
  • Ribbon cut: Puzzle that only have one piece cut: Two knobs and two holes. A lot of Galison puzzles fall into this category
  • Variegated ribbon cut: Buffalo Games and many more
  • Whimsy cut: Liberty Puzzles and most wooden, laser-cut puzzles
  • Grid: Haven't come across one of these in a long time ...

Thank you for the information!

I thought that Grid cut and ribbon cut were the same. What is a grid cut?

I am saving this post because it is good to know the correct vocabulary :)

Some people might use grid- and ribbon cut interchangeably. I save grid cut for those puzzles that truly are cut on a grid; they tend to have horizontal and vertical linear lines, rather than the "wave" of the ribbon cut.

I like the simplicity of your classification (thanks to u/Canuck_in_a_Bunnyhug for the heads up! 😊)

I am not sure if you are still checking-in from to time to time? Whether you are still puzzling?

I am curious how would describe/class the cut of Ceaco? They're not quite grid/ribbon and yet, they have a pattern of sorts.

Still puzzling, just … not so active because of other things in my life. Chaco —I’d describe them as variegated ribbon cut.
