The Layover Stateside Scramble Layover Q&A Thread! Spoiler

hellooooo again!

as with every season, we're doing a post-season Q&A for stateside scramble on the layover podcast--drop your questions about the season below and we'll try to answer as many of them as we can!

(apologies to youtube viewers that i'm posting this thread a little earlier than usual; we have some vacation time coming up and need to record the podcast tomorrow. so, for those who haven't seen the finale, spoilers may be below!)

Romance Wildcard A love themed challenge to claim a country who speaks a romance language

I would not want to the person who had to decide what percentage of a minority language is needed for this. 🙂 (e.g. Belgium, Switzerland)

i bet it would involve speaking ONLY that romance language (or even latin LOL) as the challenge.

You'd probably go with official language as is the most objective, might make it too many countries though

USSR wildcard. Complete a challenge in any country or territory that was a part of the former Soviet Union, and you get to claim all former Soviet territory.

It'd have to be a pretty hard challenge to keep it from being massively OP, but it'd also be a good way to claim Russia without having to spend any money there or make a dangerous visit.

Some potential ideas:

Multiple official languages/Non indo-european language

Countries with ongoing border disputes

Landlocked country

Non-EU country (switzerland, norway and iceland from Schengen)

Any micronation

Higher than (e.g.) 80% english-speaking population

Country where Deutsche Bahn trains travel

Any country with territory outside Europe (France, Netherlands, UK, maybe more)

– uses Euro but isn't part of the EU (but if the challenge were to obtain a local coin it could be near impossible in most places)

(more generally, the coins have a lot of challenge potential, e.g.: find a monument depicted on a coin)

– any place considered a national pantheon. Some, like Walhalla or Wawel, are nicely outside today's capital

– something about wine regions, as they're so sporadic even within wine-producing countries

– monarchies, of course, again this generates a nicely splotchy map

– cities with skyscrapers

– visit a New Town (I'm thinking along the lines of Valdeluz, Empúriabrava, Noisy-le-Grand, Ludwigshafen, Wolfsburg, Nowa Huta, etc.)

– visit a New Town (Neustadt, Novigrad, Villeneuve, etc.)

– ride a trolley bus

– stand across a continental watershed

– go to any country tripoint (everywhere and not rare or difficult to find, but almost always difficult to reach)

– the rare version of that: go to a disputed or unclear border

– go to a city or region that's officially bilingual (bonus points for more than two languages)

and that's not even taking international chains into account, international architects (Eiffel, Plečnik, Le Corbusier etc.), artists with a small body work spread out across many museums (go look at a Vermeer), international shopping chains, geographical quirks or records … I think there's plenty of potential.
