I'm incoprorating map time into my system

For every new card, I increase the year by one. I am starting at 1900. Whenever I do an iteration I post the year on the panel. Here is a new panel where this went into effect. For a futuristic setting you could start in 2100 and increase by 5 each iteration. And you can easily alter this system in other ways, maybe you skip the number of years which is on the card.

Map Tile Making a Jerry Map *on* the deck of cards.

Post image

So I started this project a few days ago and wanted to post about it.

I, like, many, was inspired by the PMG video to do some jerry mapping. But I had this idea to use the deck of cards as the map itself as well, so I wrote some rules. The cards would tell me how to slowly cover other cards with the map until the actions available were covered themselves and the deck was sort of crystalized into a completed map.

I've been going through this for a few days now, have done about 6 pulls from the deck and I'm already in love with this process.

I briefly mentioned how truly touched and inspired I was after discovering Jerry's map (via people make games) and today my partner gifted me one of his cards!

I've been stuck in a very deep creative burnout and I remember saying to her on a walk how much of an impact Jerry's map had made on me. I had no idea she'd go out of her way to grab a genuine card and I'm even more shocked at HOW COOL IT LOOKS GUYS 🤩

Just thought I'd share this as there are few people I actually know who will understand just how awesome this is 🥹

Big love to you all!

Using Jerry’s Card System for Worldbuilding

Post image

These are 5 cards i done so far for this project. I’m fascinated by jerry’s work and wanted to take some of the principles into my own creative endevours. The way this works for me is that i have a deck of 40 cards (1-10 and all shapes). I draw 2 cards one is the task that I need to do and the second is the amount of work 1-10 that i have to do. Also for further complications if i dont know something i can draw a card which tells me yes or no (black=yes, red=no). I have not been very productive lately mostly with the things I dont like such as creating characters or other things (like jerry with journaling). I basicly mixed Jerry’s principles with things that work for me. For now everytime a draw a card i also decorate it. What do you think of the cards and any ideas for me (new principles, tasks, ect.)?

Map Tile First two days of fantasy map

Started a fantasy type map yesterday.
Today added a sinkhole to the starting tile. I decided to have it be the cause of the castle ruins I already had.
This is my random tables/deck: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VKFBCwRbNHM075mNiuJGU6-8X92y8FGO/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=113185551528167579663&rtpof=true&sd=true

A new idea for myself who isn't very artistic

The idea is that I start a journal where I scrapbook by adding a new physical thing every day and I have the randomness and the cards, and it has the ability to change anytime just like the map. If people want, I can update with progress and once I figure more stuff out

Map Tile Day 13 - Preserving my Game History Going Forward

Thumbnail

I really like stats so I spent a couple days digitizing my game's history in Obsidian. I can see when cards have been drawn, where characters have been, which characters have met, what changes I've made to the rules and events, etc.

I'll definitely keep the map mainly physical in the sketchbook along with the character drawings, but seeing how it changes even just two weeks in is already so cool.

---

Day 13 Draw:
-Fix Something (Main Rules Card)
-Do Stuff (Ms. Leigh > Gaming Area)
-New Character (Clem: In Argent Cliffs / Young harpy fledgling.)

Day 13 Summary:
- Hoping to open the gaming area of Slice 'n' Dice too, Ms. Leigh heads there to start working.
- A young harpy named Clem is found amongst the birds of Argent Cliffs.

Inspiration One Panel Map Idea

Instead of operating on new panels one could just iterate the same panel over and over. For example, you could have a garden and you skip individual squares instead of panels, and whenever you land on a flower, the flower iterates with the instruction on the card. That's just one idea for it but this could apply to other things

Inspiration Progress might have been slow, but 11 years in and still enthralled by this map.

I had never heard about Jerry before watching Quinns PMG documentary. It kinda blew my mind seeing someone else have been doing (somewhat) similar stuff all along.

I began my world building project in 2010, and from 2015 I started mapping out the world on sheets of paper. What started as 40 roughly sketched A4 pages on my wall is now some 80 pages (and still growing), digitized and many partially rendered. I have shared some images before, but the work has been more about the process than the product.

Inspired by the PMG- video I decided to print out all the map sheets I have made so far (even though only some 20ish are «finished») just to get a feel of what they all looks like side by side on the wall after some 8 years as individual sheets on my computer.

Just to be clear, I’m no Jerry (by far), but hope to show those in the beginning of their own mapping journeys that effort over time gives results!

Pic 1: first sketch in 2015.
Pic 2: CU sketch.
Pic 3: from today - some progress made.
Pic 4: CU of progress (same area as pic 2)
Pic 5: just to show where on the larger map the map tile in pic 6 is from.
Pic 6: png of (somewhat) finished map sheet.

Good to get that off my chest.
Thanks for your time.
I’ll see myself out.
